Programming and Graphics / Re: TWC going all long-form on Thanksgiving Day
« on: November 24, 2025, 03:10:35 PM »
Starting this morning, TWC is advertising "The Earth Unlocked" marathon all day Thursday for Thanksgiving. So, it is officially going to happen. Now, assuming there's no big weather going on and they come to their senses and preempt at least some of it, a record 32 straight hours of long-form will start on Wednesday night at 10pm et and end Friday morning at 6am et. Currently, the record for consecutive long-form streak is 18 hours, set on the last few Saturday nights into Sunday mornings of Fall Clock Change weekend from 1pm-6am et (which is normally a 17-hour gap, but an extra 1am hour on that first Sunday morning in November makes it 18 hours). And to go along with this, "Winter Storm Alston" was named within the past few hours and they're having automated winter storm updates during long-form at roughly :00 and :30. When they have updates (studio or automated) during long-form, Local on the 8s doesn't air at all (it airs only at :18 during long-form when no updates are running). What this means is Thanksgiving Day could pass without a single Local on the 8s forecast airing at all. This would not be the first such instance in TWC's history, but it's certainly an unprecedented scenario for a segment that has existed in one form or another for the entirety of TWC's 43+ year history.

Does anybody on here remember TWC's plan to have nothing but long-form on Christmas Day way back in 2008? Well, as it turns out, this is 2 weeks from becoming reality. On Thanksgiving Day, TWC is going to have a marathon of "The Earth Unlocked" from 6am et on Thanksgiving morning right until Black Friday morning at 5am et. This means TWC will have a record 32 hours straight of long-form starting on Wednesday night (before Thanksgiving) at 10pm et until Black Friday morning at 6am et.

TWC  knows Better!!!!!! If TWC misses a Big Story.....I WILL NOT defend them!!!!!  Long-form IS NOT TWC 's Legacy!!!!!!
This is a new low even for TWC, an entire day without live weather. On one hand, it's nice for the OCMs they get to have the day off, but on another, you know having to work on a big holiday is a possibility when you take a job like this. This is certainly unprecedented. Now, I have to wonder if they'll do this on Christmas and/or New Year's or not.

I guess Midnight City

Heather Tesch or Kelly Cass?

Both.
Local on the 8s the way it is now (only airing twice an hour for a minute) or the way it was 20 years ago (every :x8 for 2 minutes except for during Storm Stories)?

The first song (the "Here We Go again..." video) is Right Now by Tommy Nehls, the second song (the "Overnight Storms" video) is And I Think About It All The Time by The Meeting. As for theweatherchazz, you've not followed the news, but he sadly passed away in November 2019, 10 months after he posted his final video, cause was never known.
Can't believe you found them that fast, thank you so much.

I've especially been looking for the first one (Tommy Nehls) for a very long time - before Tommy uploaded it to his channel himself, the only video that had the song was the aforementioned "Here we go again" video.

As for the Chazz situation... I'll miss Chazz, his contributions to the TWC community and his videos were one of a kind... his channel is an archive now. Died way too young... I know people come and go but the fact he died too early is really heartbreaking.
You're welcome. I see your profile says you're 19, so you've been looking for those songs since you were 5? I'm 27 so you still seem like a kid to me.
Don't think my search for the song started in 2011, but I think in 2016. I'm not sure when exactly.
I posted a YouTube video one time searching for the name of the song, and someone jokingly said "Darude Sandstorm."
Still though, you were 10 in 2016. Is that video of yours still up on YouTube?

time to revive this classic.

this classic has been revived in my pants

I think The Weather Channel may as well discontinue Local on the 8s with as useless as it's been since April 3, 2018 in my pants.

It's a blue computer running FreeBSD.

Why do they call it oven when you of in the cold food of out hot eat the food?
Because an oven heats food for you.

Why do you get wet from water?

I don't know about any of you still reading this, but I think the maps should return to stay. They could put an extended 2 minute Local on the 8s at :58 that would include all the now/forecast map products and the Hourly Forecast last seen in October 2014. All they'd have to do is truncate the top of the hour segment by 2 minutes and start it at :00 instead of :58 (I never saw the benefit of starting the top of the hour segments 2 minutes early), they wouldn't even have to lose any commercial time for it.

What cut was used for the M flavor version of "On A Chestnut Horse" by "Fowler and Branca" in the February-June 1994 playlist? When aired as a Tri-State Weather LL flavor, it started from the beginning, but I can't figure out the cut for the M flavor, which was later on in the song (unusual since, I think, most songs started at the same place when aired on more than one flavor).

If anybody has any of those videos, please post them somewhere. I especially want to see the IntelliStar clips from Omaha in May 2004 and the one from Pittsburgh from August 1, 2006, those were favorite videos of mine since I was 10 years old.

There's something else I've noticed, consistently, "Outside Solaris" by "Clifford Marshall Van Buren" played as an M flavor, but consistently used the L flavor narration, do you know what happened? Did it eventually play as an L with the L narration, was the narration eventually corrected for the M or did it keep playing as an M with L narration? And do you know how that song worked on the 3000 with its narration?

My guess is that the song was initially selected as a L, but they changed it to a M at the last minute. I'm not sure how the narration worked back then. Whether it was recorded on to the song or added every time the song aired. Either way, when they changed it from a L to a M, they didn't bother to change the narration.

I've heard that the narration was hard wired into the LF music. But I think you're right, it was originally selected as an L, then changed to an M, and they didn't bother to edit the song clip to have the proper narration. I wonder if this confused people watching at the time who weren't avid STAR fans and wondered why the narration had nothing to do with what products were shown on the screen.

I found an old post where you got excited when "Seguaro" played as a BTF song during a J flavor in 1993 due to an error since you never heard it past the :53 mark before. For a lot of people, that was a blast from the past, previously regularly playing on J flavor LFs in 1990 and 1991.

Yah, I was surprised to discover that "Seguaro" was played before I started watching.

The songs were randomly played by a computer. That's how they cued so fast. Why BTF songs played at times, I don't know. You'd have to ask someone that worked there in Master Control, but it's an "error" I saw all the time back then. In fact, there were times I looked forward to it because sometimes they'd play the BTF song longer than 53 seconds.

Here's an example from 1992 from my site:
