OCMs & Personalities / Bill Evans
« on: February 18, 2019, 06:28:26 PM »
Does anyone know who Bill Evans is? I got an email from someone asking about his whereabouts. Not being familiar with the name, I assume he joined TWC in recent years.

Local Forecast / Recent playlists?
« on: October 19, 2017, 02:20:19 PM »
I haven't watched TWC much over the last few years, but I received an email from someone asking for a current playlist. He mentioned Dave Koz, so I assume that he's referring to the days when TWC plays jazz songs from their CDs. Does anyone have a list of the songs they play?

Your Local Weather / Major hailstorm in eastern Nebraska
« on: May 12, 2016, 01:16:42 AM »
Originally posted in the TWCC Facebook group:

Last night, around 3am, I experienced what was probably the most intense hail storm of my life! Hail is somewhat common in Nebraska during spring and summer, but storms that nearly/completely cover the ground are virtually unheard of.

I would have taken pictures/video myself, but because we were also experiencing heavy rain, I thought the heavy downpour sound I was hearing was rain and some hail. I had no idea the downpour was the hail! So these pictures come from our local NBC affiliate on Twitter.

An interesting fact about this storm was that the hail core collapsed shortly before reaching Omaha (where I live). So we were set to get a general thunderstorm when it got here. However, the storm intensified and redeveloped its hail core. Reports before the collapse were golf ball sized hail. I guess because the storm weakened, then intensified, the hail didn't have time to get too big (all reports I've seen here were dime sized).

Local Forecast / Current Playlist
« on: January 10, 2015, 07:39:05 PM »
Does anyone have the current playlist? I've had two people email me, asking what TWC was playing. I don't get TWC anymore, so I have no idea. But it sounds like they've stopped playing those two awful production songs.

Local Forecast / Krackin' Up by the Lenny Marcus Trio
« on: December 19, 2014, 12:38:06 AM »
Years ago, I heard a lively jazz piano song on the local forecast. Somehow, I never managed to hear it again. Or so I thought. I've been going through all my VHS tapes over the last month, trying to throw away as many of them as possible. I started watching one tonight, and the very first thing on the tape was (I believe) this song. I use the words "I believe" because I only heard it once or twice, and it's been years since the last time. The local forecast comes from September 30, 2003.

As I recall, I tried to find the song by looking at that month's playlist. It wasn't listed. I thought maybe I was misremembering it or something. Now I know for sure that it was left off the playlist. Long story even longer, I discovered tonight (thanks to my cell phone) that it was "Krackin' Up" by the Lenny Marcus Trio. I originally suspected it was by them, but for some reason was never able to find it.

Anyone else remember this song?

General Weather Chat / December 1989 Arctic Outbreak
« on: September 18, 2014, 01:52:36 AM »
I posted this on the TWCC Facebook page, but thought I'd post it here too.

I was extracting footage of Hurricane Hugo for the next update tonight, when I came across footage from that December. That gave me the idea to post footage of the famous arctic outbreak. However, I'm having trouble finding the exact dates of it. All sites I've found just say December. Can anyone give me the specific dates?

General Discussion / TV to computer
« on: April 27, 2014, 11:21:40 PM »
Is there an easy way to get screenshots and video from your TV to your computer? Maybe though WiFi? The last time I attempted this was about a decade ago, and that was going from a VHS tape to my computer. The process was such a pain (I purchased multiple devices trying to find one that worked at least most of the time) that I gave up. I was kind of hoping that technology had progressed by now, and the process wasn't such a pain.

General Discussion / YouTube subscriptions
« on: March 14, 2014, 10:20:56 AM »
For those of you that use YouTube, they have once again screwed up the subscriptions area! Now it shows all recent videos (whether you've watched them or not), and there's no way to remove them from the list. I also noticed this morning that all, but one of my subscriptions were gone (so I had to remember which channels they were and re-subscribe)! I don't really mind all the changes they make, but I really don't understand why it's so difficult for them to make this area work properly. :censored:

Everything Else TWC / New weather.com look
« on: September 26, 2013, 03:35:54 PM »
In case you weren't aware, weather.com just got a major facelift. Don't worry! Your stories about spooky train stations and the 8 things you didn't know about sloths are still front and center, with those boring maps and forecasts near the bottom.

It's on the beta testing sub-domain, so in case you aren't automatically sent to it, try this link. The new look is a little too slick and boxy for my tastes, but better than the previous design.

General Weather Chat / Meteorology books
« on: September 16, 2013, 03:34:02 PM »
Since there are a few meteorologists and meteorology students here, I thought this would be the best place to ask...what are some good books to learn about meteorology and climatology? I looked at Amazon, but 99% of the results seem to be either textbooks (too expensive for me), geared towards kids, or books I already have.

General Discussion / New YouTube Subscriptions feed
« on: September 10, 2013, 10:55:59 AM »
Has anyone figured out how to delete all the videos you've watched in your subscriptions feed? It seems like you can only do it one-by-one, but I must be missing something. Surely they wouldn't leave out an important feature like "select all?" :hmm:

Programming and Graphics / WeatherCenter intro
« on: August 10, 2013, 10:41:23 PM »
Anyone remember the attached WeatherCenter intro? I always liked the spooky song playing, so I was curious who the artist was. Well I found out tonight, thanks to Shazam. For those interested, it's Anthony Phillips, who was one of the founders of the band Genesis. The song is called "Water Gardens."

Everything Else Classic TWC / Late 80s station ID, unknown song
« on: May 11, 2013, 02:52:43 AM »
I found this while reviewing one of my station IDs DVDs last night. Can anyone identify the song? It sounds like Lanz and Speer, but I wasn't able to find it on any of their early albums.
