Hurricane Central / Pacific Watch: Tropical Storm Flossie
« on: July 27, 2013, 12:24:35 PM »
Normally I wouldn't bother with any East Pacific storms, but Flossie is worth mentioning, since it looks like she'll have a direct impact on Hawaii around Monday or so as a tropical storm.  B)

Severe Weather / MDT Risk - April 17th
« on: April 15, 2013, 04:10:36 AM »
A fairly rare Day 3 MDT risk has been issued for a good chunk of Oklahoma, southeast Kansas, and southwest Missouri, including the city of Joplin. Right now it looks like the biggest threat prompting this is large hail, although the tornado potential is definitely there.

IF there are going to be any significant tornadoes, I would expect them to be near the southern end of the MDT risk - so the Red River Basin, OKC area, possibly Tulsa. SPC hasn't mentioned significant tornadoes so, along with them, my confidence in saying so is very, very low. We'll see what happens.

Hopefully this doesn't bust.  :club:

Severe Weather / Severe Weather Season 2013
« on: January 26, 2013, 12:46:12 AM »
A new year, a new season for severe weather! And it looks like we'll start off with a bang this year, as a fairly impressive trough sets up Tuesday across the Midwest with a lot of moisture and potential instability ahead of it - and if the forecast temperatures from NWS verify, we could be seeing quite a bit of it.

I'd say at least damaging winds and hail along with a few tornadoes with this. If all the parameters fall in place, those tornadoes could be strong/long-tracked. Looking at analog data, the set up looks to be quite similar to the Super Tuesday Outbreak of 2008.

I've attached 29/18Z of the 00Z GFS below.

General Discussion / 2012 Presidential Election
« on: November 05, 2012, 05:19:36 PM »
Ok...I'm going to start this and hope it doesn't blow up. Let's try and keep the discussion polite.

Who would you cast your vote for tomorrow for the White House - incumbent Barack Obama, or challenger Mitt Romney?

It looks like it's going to be a very tight race, and early voting is already a mess in Ohio and Florida. I heard some reports that people were waiting up to 7 hours in some parts of Florida just to vote?

Hurricane Central / Tropical Storm Tony
« on: October 22, 2012, 07:57:42 PM »
One word: Fish. Only interesting note is that it may be "Tony" and two storms after that would go through the name list - forcing any other storms to follow the Greek alphabet.

Hurricane Central / Hurricane Sandy
« on: October 22, 2012, 07:53:02 PM »
Tropical Storm Sandy has formed south of Jamaica. This storm may become very interesting as models turn in into a hybrid low pressure system and possibly drag it into New England by the weekend - this is far away and there are still a lot of uncertainties but it is something to keep an eye on.

Thanks for the new release, Brian. I do have an issue when trying to run the emulator - I get the error message attached below. This is my first time using the emulator and I looked around the boards and didn't find an issue similar to this. Any ideas?

General Discussion / The Olympics Hit London - 2012
« on: July 24, 2012, 03:30:48 PM »
I almost considered putting this in the Sports Thread, but the Olympics are special enough that I feel it deserves its own thread. I will personally be watching the Olympics non-stop the next several days, and this thread is for those of you who wish to discuss anything about it - the opening ceremonies, memorable events, etc.

302 events, 144 countries. And I've only got one thing to say: GO TEAM USA!

As if they haven't collected enough information on us already. I guess the basic rule is, if you don't want to be tracked, don't be logged in.

General Discussion / Storm Chasers Cancelled By Discovery
« on: January 26, 2012, 08:12:40 PM »
A sad day for severe weather enthusiasts, but Tim Samaras of Twistex confirmed a few days ago that Discovery will not being doing another season of Storm Chasers. From Tim Samaras' Facebook page:

Quote
Being with Discovery has been an incredible experience. Did you know that Discovery is one of the top 100 places to work? My highlight of being with Discovery is when they asked me to volunteer for 'Habitat for Humanity' back in the Fall. There is incredible talent and incredible employees that I've met during my 'tenure' at Discovery. This is a company that really cares for it's employees.

Alas, they have to answer to their shareholders regarding the ratings for their shows they produce. They have to make tough decisions on what shows stay, and shows that have to go. Storm Chasers was a VERY expensive show to put on, and quite frankly, the overall population didn't grasp 'Storm Chasers' as a top show anymore-to be displaced by 'Gold Rush', 'Sons of Guns', and others. As 'weather weenies' we think this is an injustice, but in reality--it's not a big deal to the general population--most folks don't really care about tornadoes unless it affects them directly. Ratings suggested that the midwest absolutely loved the show, but both coasts(population that drives ratings) really didn't care.

There was a production change right in the middle of the show sometime in early May that had affected the show big-time. Personally, I feel the fate of the show was decided last May. There was no advertising, no promotion(Reed didn't go on his promotional road trip), and we wound up with the Sunday slot--competing against Sunday Night Football. We were on Wednesday night a year ago. Why?

I won't comment on the editorial content, as nearly 100% of the viewers have commented accurately. Far too many 'creative liberties' were allowed.

I will comment that TWISTEX--despite the commentator's narration on the final episode--was NOT a failure.

One will never know where myself, Reed and Sean will appear once again. I will say that it was an absolute pleasure to be featured in the show along with such great talent.

Thank you Discovery for three incredible years.

Severe Weather / Severe Weather Season 2012
« on: January 21, 2012, 01:47:42 PM »
Creating this thread as tomorrow looks like a busy day severe weather wise for Dixie Alley. SPC has a high-end slight risk out for a large part of the Southeast into the Ohio Valley...however, their outlook does cite that a moderate risk zone may be warranted tomorrow. If they do, expect these cities to be included:

Evansville
Bowling Green
Nashville
Memphis
Jackson
Birmingham

The probability outlook is posted below.

EDIT: Moderate Risk is out.
