I didn't see a topic, but Scott Williams landed a job as Chief Meteorologist at WTXF in Philadelphia, effective immediately.

Edit: I was going through some old post and it looks like his 3rd year with TWC was just a few days ago on the 14th. Best of Luck to him!

WeatherSTAR Tech Support / San Antonio IS2 - Nighttime Icon
« on: December 19, 2011, 05:23:16 PM »
Good Afternoon Star Team,

I've recently returned to San Antonio for the holidays and realized that on our HDStar, the night time icon for Isolated Thunderstorms is incorrect. it is currently programmed to show the "thunder in the vicinity" icon which is just the thundercloud and lightning without the rain.

I do not have the Star ID, but I thought I should report it anyway.

Thanks!

General Discussion / Windows 7 - "Consider replacing your battery"
« on: August 29, 2010, 07:12:29 PM »
So, apparently Windows 7 has a major flaw in it that completely eff :censored: up your battery, yesterday I started getting a message on my battery meter on the taskbar stating that I should "consider replacing the battery", naturally I took the battery out and put it back in, problem solved...right?

wrong. after putting the battery back in the problem ceased...however it has returned today. I researched it a bit and apparently neither Microsoft or the manufacturer (in my case, HP) have an answer as to what is causing this to malfunction.

when the OS misreads the battery percentage while it is not charging, it can suddenly turn off when the battery is in fact fully charged.

has anyone else experienced this issue yet?

I guess it's worth noting that I bought my HP just a year ago with Windows Vista installed, but when the final release of Windows 7 came out for College Students i purchased and upgraded and had no problems up until yesterday.

Also: it's been mentioned on a few websites that if you do infact replace the battery, the issue continues.

WeatherSTAR Tech Support / Regional Map Request
« on: August 26, 2010, 12:21:32 PM »
Good Morning, Star Team.

I've lived here in San Angelo since last fall, and made one request on moving Austin to it's proper place on the regional map...it has come to my attention that another city is inaccurately placed. I'm asking if Abilene, TX can be shifted slightly to the right and brought down a tid bit as well...this city runs along I-20 and it appears to be placed up in North Texas, perhaps it's just me. I thought the mentioned shift above would fit more accurately.

Questions, Comments, Suggestions / WeatherStar ID Field Option?
« on: June 12, 2010, 12:23:34 AM »
Since TWCC and TWCT have merged, it seems as though having a WeatherSTAR ID Field in people's profiles (and on the side) would be logical to help the star team a little more. although not totally necessary, I thought it'd be nice for them :)

the text lit up below seems to have been tampered with sometime after the alternating logos were implemented, i know it's a really, really minor issue...but it bothers me, why i have no clue...

it's also tolerable after a while, so if there isn't a fix that's fine.

General Discussion / NBC Slapped with a Lawsuit
« on: June 10, 2009, 02:02:42 PM »
Interview With Joel Connable

On April 27th, Joel Connable was dismissed from WTVJ with a sea of controversy and questions following soon behind him. After much persistence, I had the chance to speak with Mr. Connable and ask him some questions about what happened at WTVJ, and what he’s doing now.

The big news is a lawsuit has been filed against NBC. Gina Cadogan of Schnall and Cadogan is representing him in this case, currently filed in Florida state court. NBC claims Mr. Connable violated NBC policy by accepting a trip free of charge, in exchange for taping a story featuring the Ritz Carlton in St. Thomas. When we asked Connable about the allegations, he said this.

“I did not solicit favors from anybody… and I am truly hurt by the allegations” Connable said.

The lawsuit claims a producer at NBC6 suggested Connable and another NBC employee shoot a story for his travel segment, called “The Departure Lounge,” while they were on the trip. The lawsuit says Connable never agreed to shoot a story and they were all going on a personal trip and not taking any NBC equipment.

According to Connable, he first heard about the allegations from several NBC6 employees who said they were being discussed in the newsroom. That’s when Joel says he went to speak with his news director about the rumors and she explained how shooting a segment on one’s personal time could fall in a gray area.
“After meeting with my news director and listening to her advice, the trip was cancelled because we, obviously, wouldn’t want to do anything that didn’t follow NBC guidelines.”

The lawsuit claims Connable never requested anything for free. It goes on to say that when the public relations director sent Connable’s producer an email offering to cover the cost of flights and rooms, Connable replied that he could not accept anything for free.

Despite this, WTVJ management ultimately made the decision to let him go. Connable’s contract was terminated April 27th, 2009 and a lawsuit was filed soon after for breach of contract. NBC was served this Monday, June 8th. Apparently, there is a special clause in Mr. Connable’s contract that states the following:
“[…] Company may terminate this agreement in the event of artist (Joel Connable) breach of any material representation warranty term or condition of this agreement, provided however, that prior to any termination NBC will provide artist with written notice and give artist opportunity to cure breech, if such cure is timely and possible.“

According to the lawsuit, Connable was never given written notice, nor was he given an opportunity to cure his alleged breach.

General Discussion / ABC 7 Crew Detained

my apologizes...but i just think this is ridiculous.

Police detain ABC-7 crew covering crash

EL PASO, Texas -- An ABC-7 crew covering a crash on I-10 on Monday unwillingly became part of the story.

Motorists stuck in traffic witnessed veteran journalist Darren Hunt and photojournalist Ric Dupont being handcuffed and detained.

Just after 1:30 p.m., the two arrived to report on a flipped semi-truck on I-10 West near the Sunland Park exit. They parked on the left shoulder of the eastbound lanes of I-10 as witnesses ran toward victims to offer help.

A pregnant woman sat on the side of the freeway, sobbing, and, according to a witness, several men in military fatigues helped pull the driver of the semi-truck out of the cab.

As emergency crews tended to the driver, police Sgt. Raul Ramirez told the ABC-7 crew from across the barrier to leave. Several people and half a dozen cars were also stopped on the eastbound shoulder.

Darren continued to try to get information from the men in fatigues when the situation began to escalate. The sergeant jumped the barrier and told Darren to get in the truck (an ABC-7 news unit) and leave, then held Darren with his hands behind his back to the side of the truck belonging to a witness that was parked on the shoulder.

"I'm not doing anything," Darren said repeatedly.

Darren and Ric were handcuffed, read their Miranda rights and taken to the Westside Regional Command Center. They were released within a few minutes. The entire incident lasted about an hour.

The El Paso Police Department has launched an investigation.

"It's unfortunate that any time the member of the public or the news media feels that they've been treated unfairly by any member of our department, and so, that's a very serious type of allegation - something that we have to ensure that we investigate completely, and that's what we're doing here and conducting an investigation," said El Paso police spokesman Javier Sambrano said.

Two members of the El Paso Police Department reviewed the video at ABC-7 studios and took a copy for Police Chief Greg Allen. Their department of internal affairs is reviewing the incident.

ABC-7 reporter Darren Hunt and photojournalist Ric Dupont will be contacting the department of internal affairs as a result of the incident.

Sgt. Ramirez has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.

Police ask anyone who witnessed the incident to call them at 564-7000.

i know officers have power, but this is an example of abuse of the power. honestly i think both parties are at fault, however after half way through the video where the officer shoved the reporter into the fence, i quickly switched sides.

i also understand that the officer was doing his job and trying to keep people safe, but after he ran after the reporter who was leaving, that's where i think he made his mistake.

here's my comment i put on youtube:

Quote
the sergeant is a disgrace to the force and should be relieved from duty. abuse of power to the max.

the reporter handled the situation just the way the sergeant did, until the sergeant lost it, he shouldn't have pushed the reporter into the fence and tell him to "shut up" -- not only is that against freedom of speech, its being recorded for gods sake...are you an idiot?

not all officers are like this, just the really stupid ones.

your thoughts?

Help and Support / Did i miss something?
« on: January 31, 2009, 02:07:26 PM »
I've installed the emulator, got the key, and updated my configurations and when I try to save my package selection in CINE, they don't save.

the configuration itself is fine, meaning it saved...but when I edit or attempt to change the package selection it reverts back to its original (blank) state.

General Discussion / Trouble in the SA Market
« on: September 20, 2008, 11:42:50 AM »
It looks like the San Antonio News Market is starting to heat up...KSAT vs. Time Warner.

apparently, KSAT has been running ads that time warner will be dropping KSAT from their line-up, however I received an email from the time warner website with a link..."The Truth Hurts KSAT"

http://www.thetruthhurtsksat.com/main.php

it states that KSAT lies about Time Warner dropping them, and other facts.

now essentially this should really hurt KSAT ratings.

I just wanted to hear your thoughts.

General Discussion / 2 Confirmed San Antonio Tornadoes

Cleaning Up the Aftermath

Emergency responders were busy around the city throughout the day, setting up barricades across flooded roadways and tending to numerous fender-benders. Close to a dozen traffic lights malfunctioned and 20 trees were uprooted. But by sunset, no injuries or deaths were attributed to the storm.

Dolly made landfall Wednesday near Brownsville, battering the Rio Grande Valley with 100 mile-per-hour winds and causing widespread flooding and power outages. By Thursday afternoon, the deteriorating system was downgraded to a tropical depression as it moved inland, but the tale of woe continued as Dolly inched across the state.

The National Weather Service said just under an inch of rain fell by 5 p.m. at San Antonio International Airport, the official recording station. But radar maps showed some parts of Bexar County got close to 3 inches of rain.

Rain cooled the region: Thursday’s high temperature hit only 80 degrees, 15 degrees below average. The weather service said rain would taper off today and typical South Texas heat would return, with a high of 92 degrees forecast for the afternoon. Hot, dry weather returns for the weekend, with daily highs of 95 and 97 projected for Saturday and Sunday.

A tornado touched down in the 900 block of Steves Avenue around 10:30 a.m. and rotating clouds were spotted throughout the afternoon as a band of disturbed weather moved across the Northwest Side.

A rotating cloud nearly touching the ground could be seen in the early afternoon just north of the westbound frontage road at Bandera Road and Loop 1604. The rotation of the cloud was slow but definable in the heavy rain.

Wilson County had a report of a tornado near County Road 202 at 8:12 a.m. that twisted an oak tree, damaged a carport and blew rain gutters off a residence there. Karnes County residents reported seeing funnel clouds, but none touched down.

The twisters were typical of those found embedded in hurricanes, which spawn tornadoes on the low end of the Enhanced Fujita scale that measures wind intensity. The winds can cause light to moderate damage; they can batter chimneys and uproot shallow trees, but generally don’t cause major structural damage to buildings.

Mark Lenz, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service forecast office in New Braunfels, estimated the tornado that touched down near downtown San Antonio had a wind speed of about 80 miles per hour, making it an F0 on the Enhanced Fujita scale. San Antonio Police Chief Bill McManus estimated 25 homes were damaged in a four-block radius around Steves and South Presa streets

Mike Onofre was working in a shop on South Presa when he said he heard something like a “freight train coming through” that shook the walls. Residents described objects — pieces of trees and trampolines — flying through the air as the wind blast ripped through the neighborhood in about 10 seconds.

“I’ve never seen anything like this here,” Jasmine Cortina said. “It looked like the ‘Wizard of Oz,’ but without the witch.”

Mike Lopez, a resident of the neighborhood, said he was walking in the area when a heavy rain began to fall about 9:30 a.m. He said he took shelter under a carport and started walking again as the rain subsided. But then he saw what looked like a tornado taking shape.

“I just saw a big old twirl, I just saw things flying all over the place,” he said, adding he sought shelter in a nearby convenience store. “I made it just in time. If not, it probably would’ve took me. That’s how strong it was.”

The aftermath: Some houses suffered major roof damage; the streets were littered with trees, branches and debris. No injuries were reported.

“The walls started vibrating and before you knew it we were wondering what the hell is going on,” he said.

At a nearby Mexican restaurant, a front window was shattered and a large sign advertising shrimp was blown off the top of the building.

“We had to go to the kitchen for safety,” said Jesus Castillo, a cook at J. Anthony’s Seafood Café on South Presa.

City crews — equipped with bulldozers, street sweepers and garbage trucks — worked for about two hours to clear the streets of debris. About 35 firefighters and 40 police units barricaded the neighborhood and went door-to-door checking for injuries.

Fire Chief Charles Hood said crews responded about 9:30 a.m. By 10:15 a.m., crews were raking small pieces of debris off the street. At 10:30, they broke out the chainsaws to chop up large trees and long branches.

“It’s a bit of an adventure,” said Sandra Derabertis, who is visiting from Long Island, N.Y., and showed up at the scene Thursday to take pictures. “The police and rescue I see is amazing. They’re doing a wonderful job.”

By noon, most of the debris was cleaned and street sweepers made final rounds up and down the block.

According to city statistics, by 3 p.m., seven streets were closed and police had responded to 143 minor traffic accidents and 34 major accidents since midnight.
