For you Facebook users, he had confirmed that he was leaving.

What a horrible loss :(
-
His replacement will be Dr. Richard Knabb, an NHC meteorologist. I'll miss Steve. :(
-
Horrible loss indeed. :cry3:
-
That's a pretty big loss for TWC :( I'll sure miss Dr. Steve Lyons
-
It's definitely a big change, but he has "written more than 40 technical reports and articles for the National Weather Service and the Navy." That quoted information comes directly from his TWC bio, so he has done a lot with the NWS already.
-
Congrats to him on his new job. Definately a smart, reliable man.
-
Same sad feelings too. feels like a punch in the gut when Paul Kocin left for NWS DC
-
First John Hope, then Dr. Scala, then Dr. Nese, then Paul Kocin, now Dr. Lyons? :(
-
TWC is not doing a good job at creating a good environment for their best folks. Shame
-
he's coming here to san angelo!
indeed a lost for TWC, but tough...they've been going downhill anyway.
Same sad feelings too. feels like a punch in the gut when Paul Kocin left for NWS DC
Paul Kocin's position at TWC was eliminated, so he didn't leave TWC voluntarily.
-
Tough loss for TWC but it oh well Lyons' reasons for leaving were justifiable
-
It's hard to believe that he covered 12 hurricane seasons for TWC. He posted a message on his FB today indicating that he enjoyed his time working at TWC and that he's extremely excited about his new opportunity with the NWS. TWC and all of us fans will definitely miss him in the upcoming hurricane season.

Yeah, I saw it this morning. We all will miss him. :itsok:

I agree!!

I can't believe he is leaving! :( One thing, he's the only link to the late John Hope.

Steve was just amazing. I tuned in a lot more in the summer just for his tropical updates. Might give it up if this new guy isnt that great
-
Yet another one bites the dust. :( Well it was great having Dr. Lyons' expertise during Hurricane Season especially during storms like Katrina. My eyes were glued to the TV like clockwork watching that monster come in and him explain what was going to unfold in these hurricanes. He'll certainly be missed and I wish him luck at his new NWS job in Texas. :)
-
Plus its awesome to have a fellow surfer and wave lover at TWC :P
-
He's no Dr. Steve :(

Bill Gates!?

He's no Dr. Steve :(
And Steve was no John Hope. :hmm:

Bill Gates!?
Bill Gates!?
OMG! I was gonna say the same thing!

We'll have to wait and see how Dr. Knabb appears on-air this fall, but no one should expect him to be like Dr. Lyons or John Hope. It's just going to be a major adjustment for us fans no matter how we slice it. The experiences and personalities of a person are irreplaceable.

I think the thing that upsets me the most is that it wasn't necessarily Lyons choice to leave TWC. Kinda low of TWC to trade off the experience/personality for a new face.
-
Great career move for Dr. Lyons: MIC at NWS San Angelo. Shoot, I'd leave TWC too.
The new guys knows his hurricanes. If he can deliver the info clearly, that's all that matters.
-
Guess its ok to say but TWC never renewed Lyons contract. He had to leave

I hope this doesn't been an eventual goodbye to Dr. Forbes too :/

Nah, highly doubt that would happen.

I guess I'm on the other side of the fence on this one. I never really cared for Steve Lyons. I called him Mr. "now back to you". I always felt his reporting was lacking. I can't pinpoint it but he just seemed unenthusiastic. He just rambled off maps and concluded with "now back to you". Obviously I'm not going to have a lot of people who feel the same way but it's something I've felt since he first started on TWC.

You know, I agree. I also never thought Steve looked that comfortable in front of the camera. That may be one of the reasons why his reports were like that. I've also noticed how quiet he talks and he looks at the map much more than at the camera, which may be another sign.
-
Oh wow, I did not see this coming. Hmm... I never noticed that he appeared to look uncomfortable in front of the camera, but he may have been for all I know. I will, though, miss his analysis. I've come to look forward to his presence during hurricane season--it has just become routine for me. But everything happens for a reason, so I guess it's for the best in the long run.

I always thought Steve was good, in terms of forecasting and his analysis on waves and hurricanes. I did not notice his comfortability in front of the camera. (I noticed some mumbles, though).

Wasn't Dr. Knabb one of the NHC meteorologists who wrote the advisories? I seem to remember seeing his name at the bottom of many of them.

Yeah, I believe he was one of the meteorologists who wrote advisories. Here (https://twctodayforums.com/forums/general-weather-chat/hurricane-central-'07/msg13214/#msg13214)'s one of the advisories he wrote back in 2007.
-
Knabb was pretty beast during Katrina...and smart...but he won't be able to replace the hard worn experience of Steve Lyons who will be truly missed along with Dave Schwartz, Hillary Andrews, Janine Albert, Eboni Deon, Jeanetta Jones and everyone else. I'm starting to miss even old Bob Stokes and annoying-voiced Heidi Cullen now (believe it or not). Al Roker is a horrible fit for TWC. Not to take away from his Food Network show which is good...but that's where he should remain, Food Network.
-
Dr. Knabb is currently making his first on-air appearance discussing possible tropical system development in the Atlantic.

Missed it today. How was he?

The new guy was alright Martin. When I heard Nick Walker say they had a NEW Hurricane Expert, my heart dropped! It's not going to be the same without Dr. Lyons being there. I do wish him the best though :-)

Well thats ok at least. I agree. I miss Steve! I see you have been a member for a while but welcome anyway :)
-
I'm going to miss Steve, too! Yeah I've been a member for quite a while, but then I lost my password and then trying to graduate kept me from logging on LOL! Thanks for the warm welcome! You guys have an awesome forum!
-
is it possible that anyone has the promo clip for steve that sports him as "the calm during the storm" ?
-
Sorry to bump such an old topic! The station I work at here in San Angelo, relatively new actually, did a small story about rain (or lack of) and Dr. Steve Lyons was featured in it, so I thought I'd sure it with you guys:
