The Weather Channel is introducing a new member of the team, master landscape photographer, Peter Lik. In this segment, Lik explains why he loves nature and how he captured one of his favorite photos.

This was mentioned in a video from NBC that someone posted a while back. What a joke. What's next? A hot dog vendor joining the roster?
-
Why does TWC need a photographer? He's going to be taking away from the iWitnesses.

Yes. That was the photographer that one executive was talking about in a video that I posted a couple of weeks ago. Knew it was coming, though. :whistling:

:punish: Not at all
-
I saw a promo of him on TWC. I also saw a section on weather.com about him but I overlooked it. I didn't know he was new.
-
I suspect that we'll be seeing a lot of his work during long-form shows ahead.

With TWC's current path Long Form is key to the avg viewer, i'm just excited to see what he brings that's all its something different.
-
I am fine with having him as long as his paycheck isn't huge.

Announced by Jen Carfagno on YWT this morning
Lik will have a show coming Spring 2011

I don't really know how TWC could have a show centered around photography, but maybe it could feature Peter Lik taking pictures of weather. One thing is for sure: it most likely will be yet another longform show. <_<

just about any long form show on there is photography
-
Yeah, Lik's show will be a longform show (not looking forward to it. lol). But I honestly find it pointless.

Who thinks we should have a computer expert on TWC? Or a plumber? An electrician? :D
<_<

<_<
Those are all good ideas, but TWC really wants a dancer, stand-up comedian, a singer... :P <_<
-
Bright idea: let's see how many times per hour TWC can air the Peter Lik promo during live programming.
-
He might have perspectives on locations and how weather shapes things.
Mr. Lik seems kind of interesting, as long as there is a focus on weather behind the photogrpahy aspect. Since he is self-taught, that would be an encouragement to amateur photographers out there.
I could learn a few Aussie idioms, too. B)

Not sure why but I feel like this guy is an asshole. I have a strong urge to punch him
-
Same here Martin
-
I like Peter Lik's accent, but he just doesn't belong on TWC. <_<
-
I really don't see why TWC acquired him
-

Probably because he's new and his title "photographer" has nothing to do with meteorology.
-

Connections
-
At least Marny Stanier and Jeannetta Jones were already respected as meteorologists when they talked about ceiling fans and what kind of cheese to serve at a party.
Oh, those were the days, when you never knew what OCM would make what kind of PSA next. :)
-
In the mornings, before I go to work, I need to know what the weather will be like at work, instead, Stephanie is interviewing someone or talking about other countries or whatever...I need weather, that's why I go to TWC, if I wanted entertainment, world news or interviews, I would look at a news channel, E news, nancy grace or whatever....now we got this clown coming on to show us pictures???!!! The reality shows need to stay on true tv, spike or E. I'm sorry but that's what this looks like it will be...I can always google any pictures that I'm interested in..They are trying to make this channel into some sort of all in one...I want more Jen Carfagno and less Stephanie Abrams...please!!!!
-
Yesterday I saw an ad on USA network about "From the Edge" (Same one that currently airs on TWC.)
TWC/Peter Lik really wants viewers for the premier. :(
-
I guess it's going to be called Wake up with Pete.....I'm sure Steph will like that...Poor Al........

Its just NBC running ads across their networks. Nothing new. Ive seen them do that before for TWC

Not liking him

Not liking him
Judging from the preview video on weather.com, he seems to be your typical reality/infotainment host. All hype and no substance.
-
TWC is really hyping Lik too much. It's just another show to add to the overflowing bag of longform.
-
He belongs on National Geographic lol.
-
And seriously, a countdown on TWC? And a live premier of From the Edge in Time Square? :ermm:

Wow, really? :rofl2:
-
As if TWC didn't have enough longform. I never even heard of Peter Lik, and they are hyping this guy up so much. What happened to the days when this was the "Weather" Channel? <_< Good thing I have Weatherscan (others are not that fortunate), so when Central Florida and the Tampa Bay Area is getting drenched with thunderstorms for the third consecutive day, I won't rely on the Weather Channel, and be bombarded by some glorified Crocodile Dundee knockoff.
-
I would give the show a couple weeks, especially when ratings come in.
-

I didn't realize he was such a high profile celebrity.
-
2 hours, 15 minutes until this junk is aired on TWC. :hammer:
-
Wow, my grandma had her TV on ABC and even ET is feeding into the propaganda. Damn is it really this serious?
-

 Wow
I really don't think it's a big deal at all, just another show about nature and photography.
-
I watched a bit of the 7 PM hour and saw the "pre-game" show, if you want to call it that. Not sure why Jen Carfagno was there. The promotion of this whole thing is so over-the-top, can't escape it with the commercials playing on other cable channels the past week or two.
-
OK, so I just took this random pop-up survey on weather.com about this show (one question asking what you liked best about it) and found out that 92.7% (including me) didn't even watch it.
Wonder how many voters there were.
-
His show even has an iPad app
-

Really? Why? What does it do?
-
I watched bits and pieces of his show, and I was kind of bored. :hmm:
-
The time for new episodes of From the Edge With Peter Lik moved to 9PM on Thursday nights. Not at 8PM anymore.
-
I don't like this show at all. Although I will admit the pictures are nice, the "format" and all the associated Bing crap is just bleh.
-
I'd rather have a weather report. I don't like seeing him walk around and talking in an annoying accent and constantly talking about getting the lightning right. This show needs to be canceled, enough shown. Show WEATHER PROOF, a show that I actually can use the info conveyed. Enough said.
-
I would actually think of watching this show if they had Peter Lik do photography assignments from recent significant weather events like this past tornado outbreak. If it's just photography to show off his skills, then I'm watching something else.

TWC has a new promo for the show
"Millions of fans think From The Edge with Peter Lik is Picture Perfect!"
They also showed "Millions of people like this. with a TWC logo on the right side"
Showing the Facebook like icon throughout the promo.

There were also promos for a new episode last Tuesday Night, though it was pre-empted due to severe weather coverage.

Looking at that Vimeo channel, TWC doesn't make their promos? I thought they had a in-house graphics team.

That makes people think that millions of people "like" From the Edge on Facebook, which definately is not the case.
-
About 14,000 people "liked" From the Edge, with several of the people working for TWC (For example Jen Carfagno and Dr. Greg Forbes). TWC ARE LIARS! :o

Its an advertising technique.. everyone does things like that..
in fact those promos with OCMs on sight are likely just them standing in front of a key wall and stock footage
-

Really? Why? What does it do?
It allows you to watch iPad only episodes and videos and interviews....A TV show is OK BUT AN IPAD APP? :nono: TWC really hyped Peter Lik too much.
-
Yeah, an IPad App to see some Crocodile Dundee knockoff take pictures. :hammer:
-
So why does Peter Lik's show warrant showing a transparent TWC logo with no LDL? I guess an LDL would distract from the pictures, but I still want my weather information. :hammer:

I noticed that Peter Lik's show and the "Flick and a Forecast" airings have the same thing in common: a transparent logo and no LDL, except for the Local on the 8's segment in place of a proper Local Forecast.
Bad, bad, bad, in my opinion. It wouldn't be quite so bad if the LDL was on the screen the whole time, and the pull-back Local on the 8s with the programming continuing in a box in the corner of the screen would give more weather information than just the LDL (though still less than a real Local Forecast).
However, during this show, actual weather information is being deliberately kept to an absolute minimum, and that seems to run contrary to everything TWC stands for (or used to stand for). Not everyone has access to Weatherscan, not everyone wants to run to the computer, cell phone, PDA, or whatever to check the weather... Sadly, NBC has forgotten or outright dismissed the real purpose of The Weather Channel.
Want to find out what the weather's going to be tomorrow? During Peter Lik's show, chances are The Weather Channel will give you as much information as the Discovery Channel - in other words, none... unless you tune in at just the right time, in which case you'll get the bare minimum of information via the LDL. And that's only if there's an Intellistar installed in your local headend for SD, or the even rarer HD Intellistar. Everyone else will have to do with a national city-by-city LDL.
Sadly, I have the feeling that this is the beginning of the future. With time, The Weather Channel will become a weather-themed documentary/entertainment network, and the days of actual weather information will become a thing of the past. Just because "Flick and a Forecast" failed during its first incarnation doesn't mean that movies won't return again to TWC. I think they will. And then cheesy sitcoms will be next.
I look back with nostalgia and sadness to the days when every cable network had its own unique niche. Now, every network seems to be more or less the same as every other, with just a hint of its own uniqueness remaining.

Unless it's Sunday night, a weekday afternoon, and unless there is a major weather event, you are hard-pressed to get any consistent and/or constant forecast. This Peter Lik show is as stupid an idea as Flick and a Forecast. There isn't a damn thing to do with weather on this show. All it is is some guy showing off his photography skills. But it is true, most networks nowadays don't continue their original intent or purpose. MTV doesn't show videos at all, except for a few hours on weekday mornings. Discovery and TLC have basically become Reality Central now. I hope I'm wrong, but actual weather information is getting increasingly phased out, and it may reach a point that the LOT8s are the only type of forecast there is on TWC. With the way TWC is going, it wouldn't shock me that even that may be endangered.
-
Does anyone know what percentage of those who get TWC also get Weatherscan? My guess is it's not a whole lot. And, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's been quite a while since Weatherscan's somewhat awkward appearance has been updated in any way, except for the new weather icons.
It really would be sad if the only weather content TWC provided was with LDLs, on Weatherscan, and on the webpage.

Weather sitcoms? Sign me up! :P
