An inside source at TWC told me that Good Morning America Weather Anchor Sam Champion is leaving GMA and heading over to The Weather Channel! I have always liked Sam Champion he presents his weather forecast very good! I'm glad to see he is coming to TWC!!!! Stay tuned for more info...

Please tell me that his is replacing Al!

I am shocked that he's leaving ABC, especially after the recent success of Good Morning America. Here's an article from "TV Newser," which shows the official statement from Sam Champion, ABC News, and The Weather Channel: http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/sam-champion-leaving-abc-for-the-weather-channel_b204906 (http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/sam-champion-leaving-abc-for-the-weather-channel_b204906)
Apparently Sam will be the new "face" of the network and will be hosting a "new flagship morning show" that is going to debut in early 2014.
Ginger Zee will be his replacement at ABC News. Solid replacement.
And a link from ABC News: http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2013/12/sam-champion-leaves-abc-news-to-join-the-weather-channel/ (http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2013/12/sam-champion-leaves-abc-news-to-join-the-weather-channel/)

There is nothing wrong with the current AM show which actually does weather and does not need any changes.
I feel bad for whoever is going to be kicked off the current AM show as they don't deserve to lose the job and there are no shifts for them to go to with the reduction of live shows.
While it's not a big deal to some, this also makes the first show regularly hosted by a non AMS Meteorologist.\
The whole thing just seems unessicary to me.
-
This begs the question. What of NBC and Al??????
-
I think the sleep schedule has gotten to AL, and TWC looks to broaden themselves in 2014.

Al Roker technically is a non AMS met too, his seal expired many years back.
Also keep in mind that over a decade ago there were many anchors on TWC originally weren't fully certified meteorologists until they went through TWC's apprenticeship program. Namely Dave Schwartz, Jeanetta Jones, Kristin Dodd, Marshall Seese, and Warren Madden to name a few. So this is nothing new guys.

Sounds like Sam will replace Bettes :(

TWC keeps on changing there Morning Lineup/Graphics nearly every year:
2009 - A&B move to YWT / WUWA debuts
2010 - YWT gets new graphics
April 2012 - Abrams moves to NYC / WUWA/YWT relaunch (with Abrams from 6-8am)
November 2012 - YWT is replaced by Morning Rush / WUWA gets new graphics again
November 2013 - WUWA/MR gets new graphics
2014 - MR might be canceled (or receive new graphics)/ Bettes or LaRosa might contribute, demoted or laid-off (replaced by Sam Champion)
I just hope Mike Bettes stays. He has done a great job in the past year. He will likely contribute to the new show. For Maria LaRosa, I have no idea. TWC keeps on changing every year.

Martin, I'm confused as to where that article mentions Mike Bettes leaving. I didn't see anything about that in there. :dunno:
-
Cantore said the hiring of Champion "Reenforces our commitment to weather.".
The Weather Channel Meteorologists Welcome Sam Champion (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YxMGO48WKs#ws)
I just don't get how? Mike Bettes does a fine job now and they don't need a host for their AM show.
They already have a personality driven show 5:30am-7am. Do they really need another one 7am-10am?
Not to mention they still only use one OCM for 7pm and do no live weather 2pm-4am on weekends.
That is not reenforcing their commitment to weather.

I never say he was leaving the network but I doubt they will have a morning show with both Sam and Mike at the same time. I would guess he would move to a different time slot. WUWA remains the same.

Blah, more "big names" to add to their lineup just to broaden their advertising and casual attention.
Could someone also change the topic title to make it more descriptive? Someone had to tell me about this story off-site. I never would have thought to check this topic.

LOL I did the title like that on purpose. It's like one of those teasers you see on the news. It grabs your attention. LOL :D

That's excellent, but how much of promotion or "demotion" is this really? I watch GMA every morning and have been watching it since 5th grade and am quite shocked to see him leave ABC for a "NBC" branded station like TWC. He must be crazy to leave a $3M a year job at ABC with TWC unless something happened with ABC lately.

If the new job offered a higher salary, then that's likely why he took the job. It also doesn't look good on you when you reject an offer, especially in a highly competitive field like broadcasting.
-
TWC offered Sam something he couldn't refuse and ABC couldn't give him: the management position and his very own show. No amount of money (which I've read was an enormous amount) was enough to get him to turn down that offer. Also it hasn't been mentioned, but I'm sure in the meantime while TWC is ironing out the details to Sam Champion's show, Sam will be popping up on the TODAY show soon. It would make sense given NBC still owns part of TWC.

^They also make comparisons between how Sam's sudden departure was handled compared to Ann Curry's sudden departure at NBC.
-
I honestly never thought of Sam's situation to Ann Curry's situation. At all. Everyone saw Ann's departure from a mile away. When I first saw the headline Monday morning, I thought it was a joke given the recent success of Good Morning America.
I don't think GMA will hurt in the ratings. Viewers have gotten to know Ginger Zee over the last two years on the weekend additions, filling in, and reporting from the field. She knows her stuff and will do a fine job. Now, if Josh and Lara aren't able to renew, then that's when I'd be worried.
I wish Sam all the best at The Weather Channel. I'm interested to see how his role is going to affect TWC.

Kait Parker Joins The Weather Channel
By Merrill Knox on December 12, 2013 2:16 PM
She will make her debut January 13. “Kait is a passionate and energetic meteorologist who will make a great addition to our ever-growing team of the industry’s leading names in weather,” Weather Channel president David Clark said in a statement.

Kait Parker was one of the women listed on the survey about current and non TWC OCMs a couple months ago.
-
Sam on TWC? Wow! I would say this is a desperation move on TWC's part, but if it works... I suppose I'll have to watch in January to check out how Kait does on TWC. I'm sure she'll be interesting.
If Sam gets his own show, what will happen to the other popular meteorologist with his own show? :dunno:

Please tell me you're talking about Mike Bettes ;).
To clarify, Al Roker is a personality, NOT a meteorologist (nor is Sam). Not saying they aren't knowledgeable, but their degrees are not in an atmospheric science related field. From what I understand, Wake Up with Al is staying put, and Champion's new show will be the Morning Rush time slot. http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/gossip/confidential/sam-champion-forecast-calls-flurry-bucks-article-1.1542684 (http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/gossip/confidential/sam-champion-forecast-calls-flurry-bucks-article-1.1542684) << this article describes Champion's new show as a "companion" show with Roker's show.
-
So that means Morning Rush is being discontinued?

I guess you got me.
