According to Newsblues, Kristina Abernathy, Kristin Dodd, Rich Johnson and Mark Mancuso have all been layed off. In fact, I just looked and their bio's have already been removed from weather.com It looks like yesterday was their last day. :(
-
Okay, what the hell.
-
Okay, this officially sucks. Does the word "seniority" not mean anything to NBC? :club:
Gary, does your source have any info on this to confirm? I can't find any news articles about it.
-
If they dont quit freakin doing this there isnt going to be anymore OCMS left god. :(
-
They are off the website. I loved watching Kristin on Saturday nights.

I'm going to find out right now. This is crazy. How are they going to fill all the timeslots? They can't possibly have enough people now! :o

Weekends (per weather.com) are completely solo...except for Weekend Outlook, which is OCM-less.
This should mean an increased role for Ray Stagick (bleh), Alex Wallace, and Ryan Goswick.
-
This is just WRONG!
-
WTF? I can't find any links about this.
-
Have they gone out of their minds? What are they DOING?!! They need to be hiring 4 OCMs not laying 4 off and why do they keep getting rid of the good ones? :( Geez.
-
:wow:No no no no no no no no no....This can't be happening!!!!!!
My favorite meteorologist since the 7th grade (Kristina Abernathy) has been layed off!!!!!! OMG I want to cry right now!!! :cry3: Thanks for telling me this...let me step away for a little bit. *looks away, then cries for real*
-
EDITED
Krissy must've been the first to go; she was not on Sunday, but Kristin and Rich were, to say the least. I don't even watch WO since it comes on waaaay too early for me.
Anyways, looks like it's going to be an no-women's zone during the weekday/night afternoon hours (3PM - 12M ET). I liked TWC when there were two women on at the same time, especially Sharon Resultan and Kristina Abernathy. I remember watching them together one night on July 29, 2004 (Sharon was filling in on PME that night), and that's when I re-started watching TWC on a regular basis (I had temporarily gave up the network somewhere around the time when the intellestar began replacing the WS4000 in most markets, including Time Warner). To me they were like twins whenever they were on together, but now there goes my chance of seeing a Sharon & Kristina reunion...   Hopefully, Sharon won't be in line to follow the same fate (not in 2009 or 2010, to say the least ). I also happen to host a Yahoo group for fans of Sharon & Krissy (as I often called her in recent months), which I started back in January 2006. Here's the link (http://tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/resultanabernathy_fanclub/) if you want to join.
P.S., you realize we have now lost both halves of a long time TWC pair (Rich Johnson & Jennetta Jones).
-
I know...Sharon and Kristina were one awesome pair as well.
:cry3:
I like the Carl-Kristina pair so much, I used to watch Kristina and Carl on PM Edition every day, I can't afford to miss a show, until they got separated. But I still followed Kristina on weekend mornings, and last year when she was reunited with Carl.
Ok, I'l still letting go of my tears. I updated my sig, paying a tribute to my favorite since the 7th grade.
-
W.T.F.?! my days of watching twc are over, good luck failing.
the whole network is a mess now, not just in the OCM Department.
-
We should start a protest...
:jerry: :jerry: :jerry:
Lol.
-
I think I should agree....
-
My favorite meteorologist since the 7th grade (Kristina Abernathy) has been layed off!!!!!!
I concur, Kristina was my favorite. This is sad...
-
I couldn't find anything about this awful news. The only thing that appears on Google was Newsblues.com, but it's wanting me to "subscribe" and pay. I'll keep on going.... :google2:<---maybe??? :cry3:
-
It seems like they're continuing to get rid of people who don't "get the ratings" for TWC by NBC, I will miss them all :(
-
NOOO! Kristina was one of my favorite OCMS!! NOOOOOOO!!! This sucks!! :censored:
-
I can't believe they did this! There's no way they can function under the current schedule with such a lack of OCMs. My guess is that a lot of shows are going to go solo from here, and maybe more long-form is going to get added.
-
And another thing...there will be no more "Adam Berg-Kristin Dodd". Since Kristin Dodd was layed off as well. I just started watching them two!!! :cry3:
-
OMG TWC! :censored:
Kristina was my favorite (besides Dave), and I liked Kristin a lot. :cry3: :cry3: :cry3: :cry3:
-
I was just thinking, could this second-round OCM axe be making way for WeatherPlus meteorologists to migrate onto TWC?
-
Not the best time for this to be my first post, since my favorite OCM Kristina Abernathy is layed off, and I'm pi :censored:... off. What the fudge are they thinking on TWC? BTW, why is Marshall Seese's bio still up on weather.com?
http://www.weather.com/tv/personalities/?from=secondarynav (http://www.weather.com/tv/personalities/?from=secondarynav)
-
Marshall's is still up there because he was a notable OCM at The Weather Channel and he retired and would be missed. Do I know the real reason? No I do not unfortunately.
-
And I was just getting used to Adam & Kristin too!
-
This really sucks. <_< :(
-
NOOOOOOOOO! Kristina was one of my favorites!   :cry3: :censored:
-
Looks like i offically jumped off the TWC programming bandwagon
Those 4 ocms were in my top 10 <_<
-
If they feel the need to keep giving OCMs the pink slips why couldn't they get rid of the ones I despised the most like Sam,Betty or even Nicole, I don't remember the last time I saw her on YWT.
-
They have less seniority; I'd assume that's the reason.
-
I know this is impossible but, what if they layoff Jim Cantore??? I would probably cut-off myself from any TWC stuff out there, Jim is my #1 favorite TWC OCM, here's my top 5:
1. Jim Cantore
2. Stephanie Abrams
3. Jeff Morrow
4. Mike Bettes
5. Paul Goodloe
-
I should post my top five too...Kristina Abernathy was my number 5. Now that she's gone...I don't know if I should keep her in my top or replace her.
1. Stephanie Abrams
2. Mike Bettes
3. Alexandra Steele
4. Adam Berg
5. ??? (Kristina Abernathy)
MichalkaManiac: Thanks for sharing that picture of Sharon and Kristina when they were working together for a long time. Since I do have a yahoo account I am joining your fan club. :noexpression:
Lightning86: I would cut off from TWC as well if Jim was laid off. There would be a possibility that he would not be because like I said somewhere before, Jim Cantore IS TWC.
-
I knew they probably weren't going to stop at 3 layoffs of OCMs that's why I agree with what Tyler posted earlier, they probably will bring in some of the OCMs they had at NBCWeatherPlus. It makes perfect sense to me.
-
Supposedly they also laid off all but two of the former WeatherPlus OCMs. I wonder if the remaining two will be brought over.
-
What the heck TWC!! I can name about 15 other people you should have cut besides these 4. They were amazing. Dodd was one of my all time favorites
I mean OCMS are the backbone behind TWC. Cut some of the field reporters and anything to do with the environment. Its already sad by the amount of actual weather coverage on TWC. Last OCM cuts were big but these are some major cuts. Look like were off to a sad year for TWC.
-
A poor decision made by NBCU, TWC, or whoever. I will especially miss Kristin and Kristina. There's just something about Kristina I liked, and Kristin just was a great personality in general. I wish all 4 OCM's the best of luck, and hope they move on to better things.
I cannot believe this <_<

I am very sad to hear about the lay-offs. All of them were excellent. I guess the only choices TWC has is extend long-form programming or recruit more OCM's.
-
If they feel the need to keep giving OCMs the pink slips why couldn't they get rid of the ones I despised the most like Sam,Betty or even Nicole, I don't remember the last time I saw her on YWT.
I Agree with you. They should only get rid of OCM's that I hate the most especially Nicole Mitchell  (hate her so much IMO, she has no on air talent/personality, and gets on my nerves; worst And annoying OCM ever) and Betty Davis (she is borning BTW).
-
I think Betty Davis AND Samantha Mohr. :censored:
They have no personality whatsoEVER.
-
I'm still waiting for official word about this from my insider. Haven't heard back from him yet, but I will soon I'm sure.
-
This is extremely distressing.
These 4 OCMs were among the best at the company. The earlier layoff of Eboni, Cheryl, and Dave wasn't as bad as this. Eboni and Cheryl were good OCMs, but, hate to say it, replaceable. Dave was great, but maybe too quirky for his own good.
But these four, geez.
Mark - I watched him a couple weeks ago on Weekend Outlook. How he ever ended up on such a terrible time slot still shocks me. He was maybe the best OCM on the network for explaining the weather with just enough science to make it interesting. He didn't go over the top like some of the experts do, but was able to use science to increase the viewers' understanding. You knew whenever he said "now here's the set-up" you were going to learn something. I've previously noted that Mark & Bill Keneeley pairings were like watching a clinic.
Rich - Rich was second only to Mark for meteorological analysis. And he did it with that folksy, slightly southern accent. I never loved his pairing with Jeanetta, but with Sharon, wow, together they were awesome. I live on the west coast and preferred their presentation to the EE A-team.
Kristin - Kristin for years came across and stuffy and boring. She was always good at presenting, with a clear, logical manner, but was uninteresting to watch. But like her hairdo, her personality underwent a transformation when she was paired with Adam Berg. Both benefited from being in a team together. Adam's presentation is much better than it was before, and Kristin lightened up and became fun and, frankly, watchable.
Kristina - I never liked her with Carl on PME years ago. Both of them suffered from poor production and were often caught hanging when the music would suddenly end or graphics would splash unexpectedly. They'd both start PME with frowns. It wasn't very inviting. But when they were split, and since, she's been much better. Much more interesting to watch, big smiles, etc. After so many years of being a featured OCM, I didn't think it would end like this.
Rich and Kristina worked together on Weather Center on Monday. I didn't know when I watched them that this would be it - they probably didn't know either.
It's obvious this layoff came directly from the corporate pencil pushers. All 4 were long time OCMs that probably had big salaries compared to their exposure on the network. Broadcast media is seeing cuts like this across the board. Here in Seattle, a high rated radio station fired their most visible and long tenured DJ. Why? The pencil pushers didn't think his ratings (which were good) justified his high salary. But like all 4 of the OCMs above, he connected with the listeners in a way that others on the station didn't.
That connection can't be measured in dollars and cents. When an executive looked at the salaries and roles and saw that all 4 of these OCMs were basically fill-ins or weekend hosts in lower rated time slots, they were declared expendable. Never mind that moving Mark and Kristin to the PME slot and firing Betty and Sam instead would have been a much better move. When it comes down to the bottom line, these four had to go.
The problem with the major media firms these days is they are making too many of these decisions. Personalities are not expendable and easily replaceable. If the product is no longer compelling because you've let go all of the personnel that can connect with the audience and make it interesting, then you'll never do well in the future. This most visible these days on radio stations in major market. They won't pay for good DJs, so the station is boring, so no one listens, so they cut more. The only way out of this cycle is to develop and pay for better talent.
I'm not sure I want to watch TWC any more - these four, to me, were the ones worth watching. I've never liked Paul & Alex, Betty & Sam are awful, and everything else is going to be solo (pretty much). Ugh.
-
Well, i'm sure this is NBC's fault. Ever since they bought twc, all these OCM's that have had so much experience are being layed off, handed the pink slip, "See ya later!". It seems like twc was doing better without NBC's help and i'm sure they will want them to get a new crew  so that they have exuses to make more money, yet lose many viewers, this has been a whole load of bull :censored: , especially when they fired Dave Schwartz and many other good people. Things change wayyy too fast, I have noticed, and it's causing people to lose intrest because of these "new" (possible) changes to crew or so. Really, this is starting to be more worse than the twc meltdown (Jan. 2008), and/or when they did vocal music on their local on the 8's
-
I thought the meltdown and the vocal music were actually fun events. :P
-
Just heard from my source. Says he's been busy and hasn't talked to anyone at TWC lately. He also says that his usual sources, Cantore and Seidel, have been out in the field for nearly two weeks straight and are dog tired, and as such he hasn't been able to talk to them either. But he says he's going to try to get word from someone about the situation and will let me know when he knows something. Likewise I'll let you all know when I hear from him.
-
Poor Cantore and Seidel...
They need a big rest after that huge storm. :hmm:
That's fine. I'll wait.
-
I think they're making a mistake firing them. They were good.
-
I would have much rather seen them get rid of Samantha Mohr and my least favorite OCM, Nick Walker. To me, he has absolutely no personality whatsoever. He seems way too stiff, almost like a robot. I definitely don't watch when he's on with Samantha in the afternoon.
-
I thought the meltdown and the vocal music were actually fun events. :P
Well I did too and I wish they kept doing the vocal music but many people find it "distracting" and complained is my point (like what they will do when they find out they have their fav ocm's)
-
Wait, how are you certain NBC is the blame? I thought it was the economy.
-
Why not axe some of the people who actually....suck?
I wouldn't mind seeing Betty Davis and that Samantha dude go down the drain.....
-
Wait, how are you certain NBC is the blame? I thought it was the economy.
I'd say probably both. Also, the reason why the older OCM's are being laid off is probably because they have been paid higher wages than the ones who have joined in more recent years, therefore TWC/NBC would save more money.

Need I use any more emoticons? :whistling:
-
Awful.
-
I just got confirmation of this from my source. He spoke to Mike Seidel who confirmed that all four have in fact been terminated. The good news is that those 4 are the only to be laid off this time around.

This time... Well atleast thats good I guess. They will be greatly missed:cry:
-
Something in the pit of my stomach irks me saying that there's probably going to be more in a few months... I just know it... but good to know they were the only four, even if I didn't want them to go :(
-

I fear that programming will start to be cut soon. Not just pre-recorded shows but weather programming.

or atleast some of the live programming (thus becoming like EEWC is)
-
Oh please...no more!!!
four is enough...and I guess in my opinion, the late-night programming might be cut too (idk this is my opinion. Don't trust me on that one.) :hmm:
-
If the trend continues: next round: Vivian Brown, Jeff Morrow, Sharon Resultan
Seriously. If you have a The Front commercial to yourself as the last two do, things do not look good for you.
-
Vivian Brown =
I'm sorry but it's true. She has got to go.
-
I hope these meteorologists stay
Bill Keneely (need more appearances hopefully EEWC soon and one of my top 10)
Warren Madden (from my Hometown Boston and ranked number 2 under Dave
and should just do EEWC instead of weekends)
Both warren and bill would make a great team on eewc
Alex Wallace (nice guy and needs more air time during the week)
and finally they should be hiring more meteorologists not firing them!
-
Well, if my Milwaukee Bucks get a funeral, we should have one for the Weather Channel:
RIP 1982-2009 TWC: we hardly knew you before you turned a great classic channel into a ****load of fluff!
-
TWC is officially dead.
-
TWC is officially dead.
I agree. They planted the last nail in their coffin.
-
Leave it to a big corporation like NBC to come in and attempt to fix and in turn ruin something that wasn't broken in the first place. They (the corporations) do it all the time. They did it with my local hometown newspaper which was privately owned until it was sold to Gannett, and Viacom did it with TV Land. I don't think we've seen the end of programming changes or OCM changes. and they won't be for the better. R.I.P. Weather Channel.
-
Vivian Brown =
I'm sorry but it's true. She has got to go.
Oh no. I like Vivian Brown; she's a good meteorologist.
Samantha Mohr is the one meteorologist, who IMO, has GOT to go.

Vivian is pretty good (she and Nick made a great pair), but why is she only on an hour a day now? She used to host the 4PM hour of Weather Center.
-
Im glad that i got to record carl and sharon today. :D before there are let go.
-
If they let these people go, I'm not going to watch TWC anymore:
Alexandra Steele (#1)
Carl Parker
Stephanie Abrams
Paul Goodloe
Jim Cantore
...and some other people
-
Jorma is tops!!!
Yeah, what do you have against him?

If more OCMs are to be axed Carl will most likely be the among the next. I don't think those other four will, I think ratings for those are pretty high (especially Cantore). Same with Jeff Mielcarz.

They really should put Jeff back on the TV network in the studio with a good, fun partner. Weather.com alone isn't enough, though it's still nice.

Agreed. He needs to do more than just internet forecasts.
I think he'll do very well on TV.
-
I thought Jeff was no longer going to be at TWC. How did he move from being at TWC Road Crew to being an OCM? :dunno:
-

I saw one of his online forecasts the other day, I think he's pretty good, they should pull him in as an OCM to help with this shortage.
-
I thought Jeff was no longer going to be at TWC. How did he move from being at TWC Road Crew to being an OCM? :dunno:
That turned out not to pan out. The Road Crew was abolished, but they let Jeff stay on as an OCM.
-
I would have to add Ray Stagich to the list. I don't care for him too much.
-
I should also state that the list I made were people who should have gone first before the real talent was axed. I watched TWC a lot today and it seems so... predictable I guess is the word. The people who helped keep it fresh and bold are mostly gone. Sad indeed
-
I bet that Adam Berg is greatly upset that Kristen got the boot. Those two got along quite well, you could just tell. Kristen finally seemed to be having fun since she started working with Adam.
Abernathy is classic. Oops, I mean "was".
Not to sound mean but can't we just trade out Samantha for ANY of the 4. I'm sure the majority would favor this.

Yeah I agree, you know bring back any one of them, that would be great!
-
I'd say trade Samantha with any of the OCMS that were laid off...preferably Kristina. :(
-
im guessing they'll do the schedule change to fill in for the loss of OCM's

Dunno they are holding their own right now with the current schedule.

Well well well - isn't THIS a blast from the past!
You know - I think a couple of you guys/gals had emailed me in the past and told me about this site but someone sent me this particular link the other day and I thought - hey what the heck - I'll send a little reply.
I actually just (and I guess it's a little late for this) wanted to thank anyone and everyone who gave a darned that Road Crew went away - WeatherVentures wasn't renewed - and that I never did make it back into the studio once I was doing on line stuff.
Loved the people, loved the product and loved every last thing I was involved with as long as I was with TWC.
As things were changing over the last year or so it just seemed like it was time for a change while the dust settled. So since leaving TWC I have been doing weather for a morning show (called The Morning Show) here in Fort Lauderdale. If any of you are ever in town be sure to check it out and let me know what you think.
That said - thanks to any of you who miss me on the network - and to those of you that don't - here's a big hug and a kiss anyway.
--Jeff
-
Jeff, I remember when I first saw you on TWC, and while the whole Road Crew concept was new to me at first, I grew to like it :D
I do miss you and a lot of other OCMs and on-camera personalities. I just don't watch TWC much outside of the local forecasts :P
Best of luck to you in the road ahead!
Aaron
-
Hi Jeff, it's good to see you here.
I don't remember if I gave you a link to TWC Today once in the past although I added you on Myspace/Facebook a long time ago as a fan and before you left TWC. The Road Crew was my favorite segment following LOT8s as well. Magnificent places you went to.
I am a little to your northwest in the Tampa area and I'd go down south anytime to see you on TV again!
-
Wow Jeff, it's such an honor to see you here! :D I missed you and the RoadCrew segment...it was fun and educating as was TWC before the NBCU takeover..
-

Welcome Jeff!! We all sure do miss you on TWC. Some of us, including myself took a little while longer to warm up to Road Crew but I miss the idea and the fun of it. The network seems to have strayed from fun and humor. I hope you are doing well in South Florida. Bet thats a nice change of scenery compared to Atlanta! I watched you a few times on your new show when you first started. Seems like you fit right in. Hope all is well and thanks again for stopping by and saying hello  I really am glad you are doing something more than weather.com videos now. You have a lot of talent and personality!
-
Wow - guys - I am literally floored that there's even this much response here - I really appreciate it :-)! Maybe I'll sneak around here more often - lol -
Anyway - the problem with working morning shows is the whole 2am wake up call so it's clearly past my bed time -
But I wanted to say - I loved hearing that - more than one of you - didn't know what to think of The Road Crew - in the beginning - but you warmed up to it. I know it was a little different - that was what I loved about it. As the guy who wrote most of these things I always hoped you would walk away learning SOMETHING / ANYTHING from it. At the height - we were doing 160 of these things a year - that's a lot of content - so while they may not have all been home runs - hopefully you got something out of most of them!
I'll try to stop by here - but please most def drop by my Facebook page because I'm on it honestly - I mean it's the only way to talk to the locals these days - and I'd love to talk to you guys!
www.facebook.com/jmielcarz (http://www.facebook.com/jmielcarz)
Take care of yourself(ves)
Jeff
-
Jeff Mielcarz!!! OMG! :thrilled:
Sooooo great to see ya here! Glad to hear you're still doing well in the SFL. Road Crew was awesome back then, so was WeatherVentures (hard to believe they still run old episodes now and then ). Glad you decided to stop by and hopefully you stop by often!
-
Hey Jeff! I really liked WeatherVentures and your Road Crew segments, especially how much attention you gave to Philly in 2008! :P Thanks for joining the forums!
-
Welcome aboard, Jeff. Glad to see that you've found the place. I really enjoyed your Road Crew reports and I made sure to watch the weather.com forecasts every day to see if you'd be on. B)

Once again - thanks to everyone who responded and the new guys I hadn't yet written back to.
Who knows - this biz is a crazy one - maybe our paths will cross again! If nothing else I hope I entertained a few of you and that maybe you even learned something while we were at it. I'm digging the weather and the view down here in the SFL ... let's just hope things stay calm out there this summer :-)!
Take care,
Jeff
And yeah - keep in touch with me over on Facebook if you want - and if any of you are ever in South Florida - check me out on The Morning Show. I'd love to say hello to some of you.

Hehe Jeff, I would kill to go down to Florida and see your show, but Michigan is a few hundred miles away :P

We really appreciate you stopping by Jeff. :)

Jeff! I must say that I didn't really like Road Crew at first (like others, I definitely warmed up to it), but I liked your personality in doing such. It was informative...and there was some stuff on there of which I would have never thought. It was a bit funny at times, yet it kept the better atmosphere of TWC at the time. Also, it's a great honor to have you at TWCT, so welcome! :)
