He's a great, great guy! He was our chief meteorologist here at KTKA-TV (ABC) 49 in Topeka for many years when I was at the station in the late 1990's and early 2000's. Got to work with him many times and hang out with him in the weather center, especially during severe weather coverage. Gave me many tips as I was practicing at the news desk and gave me one of the biggest compliments I've ever had. Grabbed a camera as storms were rolling in, went through the studio past him to go out back of the station, he stopped me and said laughingly, "Where are you goin'?" I said, "Out back to shoot video." He said, "You're going out back to shoot lightning video?" I said, "Yeah, so we can have something to show if we need to break in soon." He said, "Nobody asked you to go shoot video, you grabbed a camera and did it yourself? That's the kind of drive and motivation that's gonna get you somewhere in this business." Never forget that.
I was told later by Julie Goldberg (now Julie Unruh at WGN-TV), our weeeknd anchor at the time, I wasn't supposed to be using the cameras. Eh, oh well. Glad he never wanted to use the video, because it came out incredibly bad! lol
