Dr. Rick Knabb has just announced that he has accepted a job as director of the National Hurricane Center on TWC. More to come...

Could Carl Parker get a promotion to full time Tropical Storm expert?
Last tropical storm season he mostly did reports on the tropical storms and severe stormsfrom the expert desk and went back to 11am-2pm when the tropical season was over.
Since the day time schedule changes he is back in the expert role.

Dang. I'm happy for him, but at the same time I'm not. I really enjoyed watching him last Hurricane Season, he and Carl Parker worked really well together, I hate we won't be able to see a repeat of that this year. :(

I doubt it, unless he's needed. Carl is focusing on severe weather with Dr. Forbes. Yall don't remember him making that announcement? He said he always wanted to focus on convective meteorology and it was a great opportunity to work with Forbes. It'll probably be Jim and Bryan until Jim has to go on location when a storm approaches.

Doubtful, I'm sure TWC will stick to having someone with a doctorate's degree in meteorology with a special interest in hurricanes like they've always been.

OK, so what was the difference between the positions of Bryan and Dr. Knabb? Hurricane specialist vs. hurricane expert: what's the difference? I am sure TWC will probably want an expert over a specialist, so maybe Bryan will get promoted, or maybe TWC will hire someone new. I just don't see them "playing around with positions" since they become real serious during Hurricane Season.

IMO, "expert" is a bit of a higher ranking than "specialist." You can specialize in something but not know almost everything on the subject to call yourself an expert.

I think it will either be Bryan or someone they'll hire to be the next hurricane expert. :hmm: Bryan did pretty well during the last hurricane season. They'll make a decision soon, as the beginning of the Atlantic hurricane season isn't too far away.

It's the same thing, yall. They're just playing with words to get you to think that way.
Both know their hurricanes very well. Knabb just happened to have worked on the FIU campus (where the NHC and NWS Miami is located) while Bryan worked down the road in Miami.

I think Dr. Knabb's replacement should be Bryan Norcross. Congrats to Dr. Rick Knabb on becoming the director of the National Weather Service's National Hurricane Center. :clap: That is a big honor.

Dr. Knabb has not left yet. He has been on Weekend View Saturday and Sunday.

I think he leaves once Hurricane Season starts on June 1st. I believe I remember an OCM saying that maybe Jen or Maria. :thinking:

Wow, I thought Dr. Knabb was gone already, considering Bryan Norcross did all of the updates on Beryl (from the time I watched TWC).

As director of the NHC he will still be making the rounds soing media interviews and such during major huricanes that threaten the U.S. mainland so he will not be completely off of TV.

Correct they have a studio/press room there at the NHC where they do live feeds and interviews to various media outlets

On the weekend Carl Parker is at the expert desk morning through the afternoon covering TS Debbie.
Brian Norcross was on for the afternoon through the evening.
Dr. Forbes was also on afternoons through the evening.

Ha! (Well, since this is the only topic I could find about Dr. Knabb, I'll post it here). But I just found out that my meteorology professor for INTRO 1 this semester, Dr. Kevin Kloesel, was one of Dr. Rick Knabb's professors at Florida State in 1992! Of course, Dr. Kloesel was bad-mouthing Dr. Knabb in some cases about when and why certain hurricane warnings were issued. :P
A big thing our professor said is that people tend to go to the models first (he said Dr. Knabb even told him that he did this), and that is NOT the ideal thing to do. When trying to predict the path of a hurricane, it's best to look at the atmospheric conditions and how it all "comes together."
So...just a bit of trivia for you.
