Title: Release Date
Post by: TWCToday on October 25, 2008, 05:46:43 PM
As some of you may know, the WeatherScan XL emulator project has been in a closed Beta for several years. The reason being was there were not enough server resources to handle many users. For each user of the emulator, a remote server (located at Brians house) had to complile together radar and maps for each user. As you can imagine with about 15images per person its a lot of load on a server. This has now been elimated and all of the graphics are compiled by the program itself. This allows Brian to open up the project to the masses.

Before, as user participation was limited, users were required to stream the emulator. This is no longer required but highly encouraged!

One important thing to note is this is not an open release. Yes the emulator is public but you will have to request participation so that a username and password can be generated for you. This login information will be used in the web based emulator configuration. This is to ensure that there is some control over the program.

Since this project has been kept closed for the most part, user awareness of the project is low. This is a major reason we have teamed up with TWC Today! Its a great way to interact with the community and also great for users to have a single place to go instead of multiple forums.

We are very close to a release date everyone! The release should happen before October 31st. Thanks for your patience!  B)

That is great news. Sorry that I couldn't stream before, there was a problem allowing other people to watch my stream.

Excellent news. Again, I apologize for discontinuing my stream back in August (due to issues with the computer). Will I still be eligible to have a config for my area when it's released to the public?

I thought this was a project that was going on at TWC Classics. Why is it here now?

What are you on? No such thing ever went on at TWCC. Nor was it ever talked about AFAIK.

Regardless, its here now and that's all that matters. I really couldn't careless about TWCC, whether this project was ever supposed to happen there, or any other aspect of this. You snooze you loose as far as I'm concerned, and apparently they snoozed. With Matt wanting to go for my jugular now, I'm happy to add any new feature I can to keep TWCT at the top of the pack.

It was posted over at TWCC, but it was no way affiliated with TWCC in the way it is with TWCT now.

Hmm. I just recall there being a big thread about it over there at some point.

Yes this project was introduced to the TWC community at TWCC and that topic will continue to be active as long as needed but there is no "partnership" like here at TWCT. Brian will be more active in the future as things begin to move forward.  Hope that clears everything up.  Sorry for any confusion

I have to say, I'm not sure why that topic would ave to be kept active....unless its to alert everyone that you've partnered with us...

i would like to note that a goal was set at the beginning of this month to have a release ready to go by the 31st. i had a family obligation i needed to attend to last week which was for the span of the entire week, which pushed any progress ahead for another week. in my upcoming days off, i will attempt to finalize any work i have done up to this point and create a release out from it. there are a number of technical back-end routines that i am not completely satisfied with, but those have been noted and will be worked on through time. i am welcome to anyone who is Visual Basic/Linux savvy to assist me in any programming (note, programming, not testing) because for any major project i have ever worked on, it is always a learning curve: coding things i have never thought to work on before.. always fun :) anyway.. as for release dates, i am aiming before Halloween, although if i cant meet that period, it would have to be around the first week of November.
Cheers!
(and if you were Canadian, you would say: Eh?)

hey guys..
i spent all night cleaning up the sources and preparing an installation executable to install the emulator, and upon installing the emulator on windows vista, i noticed one small huccup .. vista is incompatible with the Type 1 fonts that i was installing along with the emulator.. so for the last hour i have converted all the fonts from Type 1 to TrueType fonts. easy?.. thats what you think.. so i cut the emulator over to the new TTF, and one font doesnt seem to display the right way.. i will work on this later this evening.. other than that.. the release before halloween seems to be happening.. anyway.. to see what i mean by the font not displaying properly, i took a screenshot of the traffic incident frame.. this frame was funny too..

I will be working on tutorials later today to make the install and setup for people as easy as possible. However it really is a very easy setup! :)

Also I want to note that while this is a public release it will be a controlled public release. Meaning, while with the 4000 emulator, people could download the program freely, you will need to request participation to get access to the program. Everyone will be accepted. This is simply a means to control the release of the program.

The only reason I said HD was because it was the only logo that looked like it would fit perfectly. ;)

Will you be available to set up a config file for me between 8-11PM ET tonight? I believe you already have my YIM name.

Now that it will be released to the public, you will not be required to stream it. ;)

Your old config might be still stored on the server. If that is the case you can just edit it to include the new features. At the time however were not setting anyone up just yet.

Let me know when you're setting up config files again, because I'd like one for my area.

I'm in NJ most of the time during school so I'd probably have to have it reconfigured anyway.
