Title: What Weather STAR systems have you seen live?
Post by: beanboy89 on August 17, 2007, 03:17:07 PM
Sparked by a recent discussion in the Front Porch, I decided to make a topic regarding the issue: what Weather STAR systems have you seen LIVE (not including recordings, etc.)?

I've seen the 3000, 4000, XL, and IntelliStar live; I've never seen the I, II (because I wasn't born when they were around), and the Jr live.

BTW, I hope this poll works out the way I want it to (as a multiple choice poll).

I've only seen the Intellistar and satellite live.

I probably won't be able to see the other STARs before September 2007.

STAR 3000 (1987-92)
STAR 4000 (1991-2006)
STAR XL (1999-2005)
Intellistar (2005-07); latest at Dulles Airport

NOTE: These are various STARS at various locations when I watched TWC

I know that I had to have seen the XL, since I watched TWC in the beginning of 2004. I don't remember it though.

Since that's the only other STAR I've seen live, I think it's awesome!!

I don't like the Satellite intellistar. I can enjoy narrationless music on a 4000 or JR!

Comcast has provided the 4000, the XL (V1 and V2), and the IntelliSTAR. I've seen a V3 in action, as well.

Comcast never had a JR here. As far as stars I-III...I never paid attention to The Weather Channel that far back...thus, I have no precise recollection of any of the three.

The Satellite LF is not a STAR. ;)

No. Satellite LF is done at TWC. there is no STAR involved, its just a computer putting all the images together.

I never knew that!

well how would you see the satellite forecast in a STAR outage? TWC has the satellite LF, and the STARs overlay it.

Basically, it's like a PowerPoint presentation, except (obviously) they don't use PowerPoint.

How is it those with satellite see a black bar with the current conditons, forecasts, and airport delays for major cities?

I belive that is done with a STAR. Though it may be done at TWC as well, seeing as only DirecTV and DISH use it.

It is not done at TWC, the satellite providers have their own star that puts the black bar on.  I lived where there was a 4000 2 months ago and there never was a black bar.  Also, there was a long period of time that DIRECTV used the black bar and Dish Network did not have it yet.

The actual satellite LF comes from Master, however the satellite LDL is added at the satellite headends (Dish HQ and DirecTV HQ) Both Dish and DirecTV obtained STAR systems at different times.

Yep! I remember having the IS, but I have Dish Network and sometimes when there is no black bar on the Satellite it is basically a Satellite black bar outage

IS, XL, & 4000. One of my reletive's headend uses a 4000, while my headend uses an IS. (I do remember that our headend used to have a XL before upgrading to an IS.)
