Title: Top (and worst) LF songs/playlists of the year
Post by: Localonthe8s on December 22, 2010, 06:10:51 PM
Since the year is close to an end, I was wondering what everyone thought about the music playing this year. What do you think of the playlists? Gotten better? Gotten worse? Does anyone have any favorite or terrible songs to share?

Here's a top 10 LF music video I recently made (just like how i made one last year)
Top 10 Best Weather Channel Songs for 2010 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5E8SLwGQyAk#)

Those are my top ten's and there were a few other ones I also really liked such as Storm Chaser, Supernova, Heart of Gold, Botswana Bosa Nova, Unconditional Love, etc.

My favorite playlists are the March playlist and current Dec/Jan 2011? list. Those playlists had good indie songs and good repeats worth listening again. The rest of the playlists were either alright or terrible, since most of them had rock/pop songs that I could care less about or had repeats that were played over and over again (Viva Las Vegas, Rhapsody in White, Jessica, Green Onions, etc). We only had 7 lists this year and most of them except for the March and the August playlists (to some extent) had too many repeats. The worst was the June list. It was mainly a list with recycled songs and most of them were not worth hearing again either like Layla, In Your Own Sweet Way and Frail. I think 2011 will look to be the same music-wise but hopefully more indie jazz plays like this year! :)

Aug/Sep and Oct/Nov are two of the worst of the year, but December was good, especially since it had a great cut of Take Five.

The December list I guess, in retrospect all the playlists this year were mediocre.

I just hope 2011 won't have mediocre playlists. I really haven't heard playlists this bad since when I first could remember TWC songs.

Mar/Apr, Aug/Sept and the Dec/Jan playlists are the best playlists of 2010 and it is not even close. The rest were mediocre to poor. What really weakens the playlists is the primetime section, and its complete aversion to jazz. They have been bad with all of the repeats and weird songs. Plus, the length of some of the playlists as been annoying too. For instance, the October playlist started late September, and ran into early December. Also the April playlist ran into mid-to-late June, and the January playlist ran into early March. It gets boring and annoying to hear playlists run three months straight. I hope 2011 will be bi-monthly or just monthly playlists only.

These are my 10 favorite LF songs, in no particular order:

Anthony James Baker - What If...
The Whispers - Rock Steady
Marty Q - Table for 2
Michael J. Thomas - 30-A Degrees
Brian Bromberg - Mr. Miller
Jeanne Ricks - Listening Room
Andre Parker - Where is the Luv
Bickley Rivera - Pan Funk
James Brown - Locomotion
James Brown - This Day Was Coming

my favorite playlist In order
December (good playlist/repeats, but most of the repeats were from Nov/Dec 09. Primetime's still meh. 9.5/10)
March (I should heard more songs in this playlist. It was good. No horrible repeats expect What I got. Primetime wasn't bad in this one. 9/10)
Aug/Sept (good at first, but got tiring. Repeats were good expect Green Onions. Primetime was OK. 8/10)
May (alright, just got tiring for 2 months. Horrible repeats. Primetime was boring. 7/10)
June/July (medicore. Primetime was just 2009 repeats expect Brains for Bricks and March by John Williams. 6/10)
January/February (like Nov/Dec 09, this playlist ran way long. Repeats and primetime was just terrible. 4/10)
October/November (This playlist felt it lasted like a long time. <_< Primetime and repeats were alright. 4/10)

Overall: 7/10. Should have done better. Last year is a bit better (7.5) for having 4 good playlists.

I didn't mind Layla, because Layla is basically an annual TWC summer tradition, and has been so since 2001. Rhapsody in White is also a good song. But the others, yes, there were songs that played way too much.

I liked the any Spring or Summer list. Top songs to come.

Here are my other 10 favorite LF Songs, in no order:

Charley Langer - Never the Same (Oct/Nov)
Caleb Quaye - Out of the Blue (Mar/Apr)
Michael Haggins - Diamond Eyes (Aug/Sept)
Booker T - Warped Sister (Mar/Apr)
Bickley Rivera - Take Me Away (Aug/Sept)
Gooding - For Love (Aug/Sept, Dec/Jan)
David Benoit - Botswana Bosa Nova (June/July)
Steve Oliver - Barcelo (June/July)
Pink Floyd - Terminal Frost (June/July)
Billy Preston - Outa Space (Dec/Jan)

Overall, I would give this year 7/10. The daytimes were consistently very good to great, because of the smooth jazz. Primetime were almost always terrible, except for Aug/Sept and Dec/Jan. Mornings (save the rock songs) and overnights were usually fair to very good. Hopefully, 2011 will have less repeats, more jazz in the primetime, and no playlists lasting 12-14 weeks, which has happened a few occasions.

John Williams - Olympic Spirit
John Williams - Jurassic Park theme
Ryan Farish - Let it Rain
Booker T and the MGs - Green Onions
Issac Hayes - Shaft
Lynn Patrick - Snapshot
Sam Spence - Magnificent Eleven (good song at first but got old fast)
Allman Brothers - Little Martha

Ryan Farish - Fall Rain
That song is not used in this year (it was used Jan 2008).

Monoliths - Maserati

BONUS: Anything by Gooding except For Love

There are plenty more worst songs. I'll post them soon.

I loved Eminence Front and Mag 11 when I heard them back in January, but I too, got tired of it back in August when it played again. I also got tired of Lily Was Here when it played so much in October. Even though these songs were ruined because they were repeated, I still don't hate them. :)

I didn't hate any of the playlists nor was I thrilled with any of them. I give this year a "meh" rating.

Localonthe8s, I agree with your worst songs list on YouTube. That cut of Jessica was so crappy and sloppy. I totally forgot about White Castle Blues!!! That was terrible. Green Onions and What I Got aren't bad songs, but it got really annoying hearing them for nearly half of 2010!!!  :nono: Ugh, and Marrooned sounds like scratching on a chalkboard!  :hammer:

My definitive #1 favorite LF song of 2010 is "What If..." by Anthony James Baker.  It is such a relaxing yet groovy song.

My Favorite 3 Playlists (And Dayparts):
March (All Dayparts)
May (All Dayparts)
June/July (All Dayparts)

My 3 Least Favorite Playlists (And Dayparts):
January/February 2010 (Primetime)
August/September (Parts of all Dayparts, some good songs, some bad, and just too long with too many songs.)
October/November (Primetime)

Basically, I begin to dislike any song if it plays more than 6 weeks at a time.

One of the bright spots of last year's playlists (especially daytime) are the fact that quite a few longtime TWC classics returned, like Punta Del Sol, Theme from St. Elsewhere, Listening Room, Wishbone, the Gift, and Physical Therapy. Hopefully, that trend will continue this year.
