Okay, anyone with DirecTv better just start rolling tape/disc/DVR.
This could be big!
-
Wow, I had no idea anything like this was even in development. Very cool! :cool3:
-
Will they add this to the HD feed after TWC is done with the HD star?
-
I would imagine so. If they can do it in SD, they should be able to do it in HD also.
-
That's neat I'll be sure to record this!
First of all they said "Interactive", so it might be like the DISH feature, second I'm hoping to see an actual "local" local! Better not have narration or at least very little of it.
-
Is the DirecTV national star doing any of work of this with you box doing the rest? and we will have to wait for a national star hd before it will come to the hd feed.
-
On the 8s: For the first time, DirecTV viewers will be able to enjoy a truly local “local on the 8s” which until now has been only available to cable TV subscribers. Presented six times each hour, viewer will get up-to-date details on their current conditions, a radar view of what’s brewing nearby, the seven day forecast and local weather alerts and advisories.
On Demand: Can’t wait for the 8s? Viewers of The Weather Channel can simply click on the red button on their remote to get a quick menu of interactive weather features, including current conditions, the five day forecast, weather for up to five other saved cities and weather alerts – all while continuing to watch live programming on the same screen.
On DirecTV “Active”: The Weather Channel is now the featured provider of personalized weather content on the newly designed Active portal. All the content you receive in the On Demand service is also available via this portal.
DirecTV and The Weather Channel are introducing another innovative interactive feature with this launch: the Weather Alert Tracker. If the National Weather Service issues a warning about a major weather event in your area – including flash flooding, thunderstorm, or a tornado – an interactive alert ticker will appear on The Weather Channel prompting viewers to click the red button on their remote for more details.
:thrilled:
-
Where'd that come from Vic? I'd like to see the actual article, if you could please provide a link. B)
-
It came from the link "Joe the Dragon" posted in the first post but I don't know how to add the name of the quote authors in the post.

...and straight from TWC.
-
Very cool! :cool3:
I might switch back to satellite if this turns out to be a true local forecast. The hell with paying Comcast big bucks for the same service. <_<
-
That sounds GREAT, especially for all you comcast customers too..lol! My mom is getting DirectTV when she gets her new apartment so I REALLY can't wait now!
-
Do I have permission to speak, without naming a direct source, Gary? :P
-
I can't wait for this!
-
So this will be even more local? If so, I have a even better service to switch to than Verizon!
-
Do I have permission to speak, without naming a direct source, Gary? :P
Of course.
-
Ok, then here's the scoop from my source.
If you're thinking of switching to Dish for the local... don't. It's very primitive. And I stress that. Yes, it will be kinda "pretty," and somewhat interactive, but is it worth ditching the IntelliStar for? No.
Note: Let the term "interactive" represent you cuing up the application with a button on your remote; changing cities through zip codes and switching between data sets (currents, regional radar, severe weather alert, forecast).
Quick Facts:
*The data will be driven through zip codes. This will be nice for current conditions, as they will be local, through HiRAD, right down to your ZIP! Unless your ZIP covers a large area. Bet they didn't think of that one.
*Information will be spotty, when compared to the Istar. Basically, it will tell you the Highs and Lows, and the weather "Sct'd Tstms," "P Cloudy/Wind," etc.
*No details like on the Istar's text forecasts. Also provided will be a 7 day (somewhat like the Istars.
*As far as radar goes, talk about useless. It's small, VERY "regional," and only certain major areas are labeled, making it hard to see other areas.
*When tuned to TWC, a message will pop up if a severe weather alert is issued, asking you to start your TWC application.
That's all I have for now. Maybe more later. :D
-
Hmm...doesn't sound like all it was hyped up to be.
-
But I thought TWC said it was gonna be similar to a cable intellistar on the 8s.
-
They do that only to get viewers to use the feature. At least it's better than the satellite forecast where you can't get your own forecast if you don't live in a big city.
-
It occurred to me, this is basically the same as the TWCi service the satellite companies used to offer, is it not? :ermm:
-
Hey - it's a start, right? I mean, as Mike said, it's better than the sat lf. :pimp:
Sorry I just took a giant dump on all your celebrations. :footinmouth:
-

Haha, it's alright. It's better than nothing because right now on DTV to get a "local" forecast you have to go all the way to a menu and its slow as all hell. This from what i've interpreted will be much nicer.
-
These didn't come from me, or this forum. Oh, and to make things easier, don't ask any questions. Just wait for the damn thing to launch.

Where did they come from?
:P
-
That's how it'll look like? Looks very unprofessional IMO...
-
Actually, I don't think it's that bad. It's beyond what I had expected. Though, they could make the radar bigger.
-

Are you kidding me? That's pretty awesome looking for an iTV app!
-
Sorry, I thought you meant the actual local forecast graphics would've looked like that.
-
Wow, I had no idea anything like this was even in development. Very cool! :cool3:
This has been planned ever since TWC announced it would be in HD, and ihas been discussed either here and/or TWC Classics.
-

I actually think it looks better than the actual IntelliStar. :P
-
Apps like this have been in development for years and years, just not TV ready. It's very hard to develop an app to work properly with so many different STB types and models.
-
They should've made the current IntelliStars to look like that!
Anyways, it's about time that a Satellite TV company has started something like this. This may give hotels/suites that do cable by DirecTV an advantage.
This is gonna be interesting.
-
So wait...this won't activate automatically on the 8s?
-
Looks a lot better than the current IS!
-
So wait...this won't activate automatically on the 8s?
From what I understand, no. There will be a "popup" asking to to press a button to start seeing local conditions.

You have got to be damn well kidding me. They have the technology to send a message, but not to remote start an app? Tremendous.

I think it was Dish's call to have it that way, if I'm not mistaken.
-
Would it ever be possible to show local forecasts using the same way satellite companies present local channels?
-
I think it was Dish's call to have it that way, if I'm not mistaken.
Boneheaded move of ever if that was/is the case. If it was all automatic, even in this less-than-perfect state, they could have pimped this on their commercials, and probably gotten a ton more subscribers.
Yes, I know of a lot of people holding onto Comcast for the sole reason now of a true Local. It used to be because you didn't get Local channels, too. Now it's just a Local on the 8s.
-
Would it ever be possible to show local forecasts using the same way satellite companies present local channels?
Well, of course it could. Would they want to do this? No. That's a lot of precious space that could be taken up by other channels. Could they do something on a regional basis? Absolutely. I don't know if they would want to, though. That would be a great decision to make it a bit more local, but It will probably never, ever, happen.

If your not a member searching won't turn anything up at TWCC, at least as long as the information is in the current TWC boards, where it theoretically should be.

Wow all that excitement for nothing. <_<

They can do a weather scan HD national with a LoT8 for the top citys.
-
Wow all that excitement for nothing. <_<
Not really. It's still something that we've never had on DTV, and I like the way it looks :D
-
Tomorrow's the big day
-
Tomorrow's the big day
I thought you got rid of DirecTV.
-
Instead, I will stay w/ DirecTV until the prices are too high
-
Wow
-
There has been no LDL on the satellite local forecast for an hour now. Looks like we're getting close to this "actual local".
-
The LDL issue can't be related to the iTV app. It has nothing to do with an IntelliStar - all the data is provided through your specific cable box, located physically within your house.
-
But it's still occuring. So my receiver is causing this?
And the satellite lf is still gonna be the same tomorrow during the 8s? There will be no new "local forecast" :(
-
Instead, I will stay w/ DirecTV until the prices are too high
If DirecTV is too expensive for you, then Comcast isn't for you either. We're paying as high as $250 a month for digital cable and high speed internet service.
-
Well that was quick.. its 12:13 and I see this:
-
well, go get your local weather now, dammit. <_<
-

:P
It doesn't look like anything out of the ordinary, and frankly if this is all they did, I'll be pretty upset.
-
But, it sure wants you to watch HURRICANE COVERAGE ON THE WEATHER CHANNEL YOUR HURRICANE AUTHORITY, doesn't it?
BTW, as for the whole hotel issue; they don't use DirecTV remotes, and without those, I don't think there's going to be any way to make this feature work.
-
Yeah.. and I just did nothing on the LF that just aired... so.. I don't know.
-

TWC's new tagline:
"We're awesome, and you know it."
...that sums THAT up. :P
-
Those shots look nothing like what Tyler posted a few pages back.

Yeah, I believe the only way that it could work for a hotel-like environment is if they had automatically cue on the 8s, without any user-intervention.
-
Well, I was TOTALLY wrong of the features on the new Local On the 8s... For one, it activates on its own, and well, it works!
Heres a video of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CyDaonlT1Y
-
Congratulations, TWC, for executing something BRILLIANTLY.
Congratulations, DirecTv, for agreeing to this.
-

Yep! I actually really like it. One thing I would like changed though, is that they maybe put the name of the city for your zip code because "For ZIP 98001" looks kinda weird. But other than that, I really like it. Finally DirecTV has a "Local on the 8s".
-
Looks interesting. Thanks for the video, Brandon.
A few comments after seeing the video:
- The DirecTV IntelliStar is still present because the Station ID test is still present.
- The flavor lineup for the actual local is a bit odd; you'd think they would have it more like the IntelliStar's flavor lineup.
- Is the "Local On The 8s" logo bug supposed to appear late like it does?
- The test looks bit small in some spots.
- The static radar image could be a bit larger.
- Is it supposed to end early so we can see the satellite LF radar/satellite lops at the end?
- What happened to the DirecTV IntelliStar LDL? Was it disabled because of this new local feature?
-
Mine's is not like that
-
Meh, it's OK. The transitions are too jumpy plus I am unable to change channels on my DTV receiver once i have TWC on. I have to turn off the TV , leave the receiver on and change the channels there, then turn the TV back on to get a different channel.
The local forecast is too short. There should be an LDL and the duration should last for the entire 2 minutes.
Plus, I'm getting weather for Cherry Hill NJ, Ardmore and Bensalem, PA. None for Atlantic City...
-
UPDATE: It's gone. Now the regular Satellite LF w/o the LDL is here
-
I think they did disable the LDL during the forecast because of the new feature. And I think the LF ends early because they want you to see the animated radars.
-
It looks like a PowerPoint presentation.
-
It does look like a PowerPoint presentation. Not a bad start for the DirecTV LF's, though they could've made them longer.
-
Also for the people wanting some sort of transition, I really think it's not possible. The SD boxes are very low powered boxes and probably can only handle whats being thrown at it right now. But, now that I think about it... they could maybe make the transitions a "video" type thing, but I don't know. A transition made by the box I think its pretty impossible due to the underpowerful boxes, maybe the HD ones, but not SD.

You have a good point there. If my box were a satellite box, it will definitely not handle animated graphics. Heck, it takes 5-10 seconds to load a non-animating TV guide.
-
Here's mine for my area...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwebCMe3yT0

Maybe Because you live in Florida

It shows the Satellite LF instead. Why is it doing that?
-

It hates you.
-
We finally have the LF playing in my area
-
It's on and off at times. The application did not appear at the :38 lf either.
-

Didn't know those boxes adapted to their environment, mmmmhmmm.
-
I saw the Youtube video, GREAT IDEA TWC!!! However, to me, the local on the 8's graphics look a little stiff. Like they were fan made. It is just me?
Any word of Dish Network getting this?
-
Another member who has DISH told me his LDL wasn't running on the satellite lf. Maybe they're gettin' it too.
-
So the satellite IntelliStars have been discontinued because of this new feature?
-
So the satellite IntelliStars have been discontinued because of this new feature?
No. They're still around, but apparently they've turned off the LDL during local forecasts. IMO, this is a bad decision because not all DirecTV receivers support this new Local segment, so they should still cue the LDL for those viewers.
-
The LDL is still being used when the LF is not on
-
The LDL remains off during LF's because of appearance. It wouldn't look right jumping from the local boxes to the national feed with the LDL suddenly on screen.
About Dish's LDL... IIRC both DirecTV and Dish are controlled via the same config file (seprate systems, but similar configuration) so when TWC removed the LDL from showing during the LF's for DirecTV, it problaly got applied to Dish's LDL as well.

(also Kyle, if you stop by the IRC again, just highlight me because i'm there :D)

K
One other quick point... Those DTV boxes would NOT have the power to render any transitions let alone a full 720 res. video for a transition... Im sure the boxes are already choking to pull this off as it is..
-
I changed the zip code in my box and the local on the 8s switched along with it. very interesting .
-

Yeah.. I would guess that they are on their last limb doing this whole thing as is.
-
Wow i hope our boxes aren't damaged by this.
-
They wont... just make sure ti doesn't get too hot. If it does, turn it off for awhile.
-
I hope they improve this feature nevertheless. I see many flaws. I like it that such an application was developed though. If I change the channel right after the local kicks in, it shows the satellite lf instead.

I like the local "On Demand" version too! U get forecasts and live radar for any city nearby. I'm gonna try NYC :)
-
We've had that for some time, just not under the same name.
-
On Dish Network's LOT8, the LOT8 logo is now in the upper right hand corner. Is that a sign of this to come?
-

No, it's been like that for about a month or so. I don't think this has anything to do with the new feature.

Here's my video of a one minute LF from my house tonight. Pretty much everything went wrong with this, from trying to download it to trying to process it, so I wound up having to use Billy's method instead:

Argh, the Local forecast application HAS NOT been launching for the past hour.
But the local "On Demand Version" is working fine. Like the graphics!

Let me guess; the preemption was probably messing with something since it wasn't the regular schedule. I wonder exactly what they use to cue the DirecTV boxes...

Well, there is problaly a Control PC between TWC and DirecTV... Since the LOT8s arnt always on the true :8's the Control PC problaly decodes the VBI, and then converts the cue signal to something DirecTV understands, which then cues the box.

really? Mine's like only $150 a month... wtf extra service are you paying for?
-
Here in marlton, we have Digital preferred package with HBO on one TV, expanded basic on two other TV's, and high-speed internet. In Bensalem, I have expanded basic on all of the TV's, high-speed internet, and digital phone.
-
wtf how do you afford so much for cable! :o
-
I have no idea, I'm not the one who pays for it...
-
Holy moly :o
I've never heard of someone paying $250 for cable. That's just absurd.

Hmm that sounds about right. For premium internet (20mbps/3mbps) and digital cable with several HD DVR boxes and service the bill i up to about 150. With your telephone and extra services I can see you having such a high price
-
The 1 minute flavors have weird lineups...

I have a TiVo HD, with 2 CableCARDs, which for all who don't know what they do, they're basically PCMCIA sized cards that are pretty much your cable box, each card provides 1 tuner, thus for a total of 2 in a Series3 or a TiVo HD. The first card is free to rent, the 2nd is $1.50 a month to rent. Using CableCARDs gets you a $7.90 credit on your bill per month for not using their equipment, thus essentially they're paying you to use your own. Now, my TiVo service is $12.95 a month, but you get their premium guide, podcasts, etc (visit their site for more info), and I pretty much upped the drive in my tivo to 500GB, thus essentially i can record 64 HD hours or 607 SD hours... Now, if only my Comcast provided TWC HD :doh2: In the long run a TiVo is a better investment for me, may not be for you though.
My bill for the month is the Digital Preferred Plus Promotion for 6 months $ $74.99, 3 other boxes for $14.85/mo total, $1.50 for the Cable Cards, $7.90 credit for using the CableCARDS, $6 for the HD service, $42.95 for the ~10mbps (average) internet. $3 for the cable modem rental, $1.78 for taxes, thus comes to about $151/mo if all goes right. Those totals won't add up to $151 at the moment due to the change of service (threatening to cancel your comcast ftw) but that's what my cable averages out to.
I apologize if this makes no sense whatsoever... it's late for me...

Well, it turns out that the DirecTV system does indeed have a severe weather feature. I found a city where a Severe T-storm watch was active, and the system notifies you of the watch with a still graphic on the bottom of the screen, telling you to press the red button for more information. During the LF, it also displays a bulletin page with a red titlebar with information on the watch. I'm guessing it also works the same for a warning, but I guess I won't get to see that during my final day here at home.
Video to come later...

Interesting I might have to change local zips for that :P
Oddly enough, during the 1 min flavors, the application is on during the entire lf. It doesn't exit to the regional radar loops like the K or L flavors.

Oddly enough, my area was under a severe thunderstorm warning earlier this evening, and a beep similar to the Intellistar beep, was sounded. It was LOUD. Also a Special Bulletins screen popped up on the lf. I have it recorded on my VCR, i'll upload it tomorrow.

Steve, your slipping! :nono: :P
Apparently, I thought I saw Steve say he was going to give us a clip of this.

At around 1:59 you'll see the severe weather banner pop up and a beeping tone will be made. I also recorded at the end when I hit the red button and clicked the alert tab to view alert info.

They are very very very close to this being a perfect replacement for the IStar. Need to work out the radar (is it that hard to display a gif?), and a format for the LDL to disappear for a severe wx bulletin, and boom.

Well IMO, a 36 hr text forecast segment and a tides would be appreciated too.

I liked the XL/IS alert tone better. Though I am pleased that DirecTV's stepping up to the plate and began localizing weather on their receivers.
