Title: STAR Upgrading Question
Post by: sonicdoommario on June 10, 2008, 08:58:52 PM
For those who have witnessed any kind of STAR upgrade, how long does the outage last? Does it upgrade in a fingersnap or does it take a few days?

I've never seen this happen, thanks.

it shouldn't take days...if yours happen to do so, there is something seriously wrong with it.

...i believe it takes an hour or a couple of hours? though i'm not totally sure.

When the major IStar update happened to me in Oct 07, it took the span of about five minutes to reboot the STAR.  The update itself was silently done, it needed the reboot to take effect.

I'm not talking about graphical updates, physical updates to the STAR, like going from an XL to an IS.

I imagine it wouldn't take any longer than a day or two. If the headend is on top of their game, and everything goes smoothly, it could probably be done in a few hours.

I remember when my XL was upgraded to a Istar... it was a Saturday morning (go figure), and it took just a few hours.

mine may have been on a saturday too, but it was completed by the time i got up...

i remember emailing kyle (wxmediafan) about it because he wasn't on aim, but i didn't know anything about the STARs then, so i was kinda stumped to hear his star didn't get upgraded.

Mine was upgraded on a Wednesday morning. It took like an hour.

I don't recall exactly when my domestic XL was upgraded (it was in early 04), but my Weatherscan XL strangely was also upgraded to the IntelliStar on a Saturday. It was on 9/27/03, the same day my XL started showing the opaque LDL. I noticed it was upgraded in the afternoon, so I don't know how long it took.

My XL upgraded to an intellistar in August 2004, on a Saturday.

It was? I remember seeing the IntelliStar down there earlier than that.

Yes, fresh in my mind. Ventnor City had an XL in August. I don't know about Sea Isle or those other towns u often go to. They have different stars. Weirdly, the Wildwood, NJ intellistar has Atlantic City on the CC even though they're like 55 miles apart.

You get IntelliStar 21897 right? If so, I guess they got the upgrade later seeing how the ID is a higher # than Cape May County's IntelliStar (21876). I do remember seeing the IS in Sea Isle in June and July 2004.

Yes. Cape May doesn't have Atlantic City on the CC so it would make sense for the cable company to do whatever they want to do to their star.

My XL upgraded to an IntelliStar in Sept 04, even through I stop watching TWC until that time. I first saw the IntelliStar in Dec 04

I actually saw my 4000 get updated to a XL back in January of 2005 (Don't know why they went to XL instead of IS) but it was later at night, around 10:30PM. I remember it showed one or two satelite forecasts, then went black for awhile and after that TWC came back on with the new XL with the new narrations which were kind of a let down because the narrations cut into the music.

I'm not entirely sure exactly when my I got my IS (though I know it was in March). In fact, I have a clip of it in it's "early days" from March 7, 2004, which could very well be in the first week of my IS's "life". (http://youtube.com/watch?v=_t5NL5mDRs8)

OH!  Didn't realize that you wanted when the STAR itself was upgraded.

Mine's an interesting tale...we had the XL up until April 2006.  Indiana just started using Daylight Savings, and our XL's time was not accurate (I posted to the STAR Team about it...someone had to manually reset the machine).  The headend (Comcast) never did...the next day, we got the IStar...with setting for both my area and Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.

I don't remember the details because I wasn't really watching TWC all that much in my younger days, but I do remember that I woke up on a Saturday, watched the Lot8s with the XL, went to the mall for about an hour and a half, ate lunch for about 45 minutes, went grocery shopping for another hour, and came home.  This was a span of about 3 hours and 45 minutes.  When I came home, I checked the LF again and the IS had replaced my XL.

An intellistar looks like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQ9o5wa6Ry0

While an XL looks like this.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbqet7VPJGw The intellistar is the most frequently used.

You went to the Mall? The Galleria down highway 150?

I wish that the Comcast headend in Bonita Springs, Florida would stop procrastinating upgrading to an IS from an XL. I need all the help I can get to get them to do that b/c I am going down there 3 weeks from yesterday. The WxSTAR ID # for that headend is 002293.

So you want them to upgrade to an IS? Can't say I know many people who would say that. Most would rather see the XL.  :twothumbs:

Could you get a clip of it? I like to see XL clips.

Cant argue with you there. While visiting some friends on the Outer Banks, NC I was able to get a few clips of the XL down there.

Wow, an XL in the Outer Banks? I go there once in awhile, so maybe next time I go down there I'll see it!
