STAR Outage Issues... possible Comcast systematic issue?
« on: March 04, 2010, 04:42:03 PM »
Once again, Intellistar 22840 serving the Lansing area along and west of 127 had video feed issues. During the last 20 seconds of the 4:28 PM EST LF, the music became spotty and then stopped. Following the local forecast, a scrambled picture of the satellite local forecast then faded to black. This lasted for a little less than 5 minutes, and then a scrambled video feed once again returned. After about 30 seconds, the video was fine and the LDL cued not much later. I made a post yesterday about how it happened yesterday, and I remember seeing it also happen on 22842 over in Haslett/East Lansing back on Tuesday. Anyone know what could be the cause of this... happening almost exactly the same way, at exactly the same time every day?

Satellite alignment or distortion could disrupt the data flow to the STAR and/or picture. Also we don't know the extent or method for rolling out new software roll outs so some of it could be linked to that

I brought up that same possibility to Patrick... who tells me that isn't likely to be the issue here.

According to this Sun Outage Calculator, it matches up perfectly.

I wasn't sure if satellite transmissions were involved as Aaron has Comcast, but Martin just mentioned that it does matter with receiving the STAR data.  Thus, this issue is going to occur close to every equinox (spring and autumn).

Why would it make a difference with Comcast?  From what I can tell its definitely a problem with the input data/video not the unit itself

It's because I thought that the information was sent to the STARs via cable to cable companies and via satellite to satellite providers.  However, I didn't realize that it's only done by satellite.  It's my mistake, Martin.  I'm still lost as to how everything works and can only piece together ideas from what everyone has taught me so far.

Easy thing to mix up. At one point cable companies get their signal via satellite :P
