The SD Satellite LF has been updated. Basically they integrated the HD graphics but into a smaller and more regional form. The HD lf is unaffected and it seems like they also used the HD LF LDL, but the SD LDL during programming is unaffected at the moment. On a side note, the SD LF we had previously was updated exactly 3 years from now - 5/25/08.
Clip to come shortly..
-
Thanks for the update, i just saw this at both :08 and :28 before the IS cued
-
I'm glad they finally did this. Its a much nicer design than the previous. Now all I need is Dish network to install local stars here!
-
What the hell are yall talkin about?? i saw no changes at :48
on an unrelated note .. 24131 displayed its animated WUWA ad at :48
-
***As of 3:48 PM CDT (4:48 PM EDT), TWC reverted back to the original SD satellite forecast. Maybe they were just testing something?
(I happened to see it just in time at 3:38 this afternoon, and it looked really good.)
-
I would guess they were testing it. There is no way they'd make a 4:3 Version, show it twice, then go back to the original. I was like "HUH?!?!" When it didn't come on @ 4:59

Because you missed it :P

It looks like they're finally phasing out their old WPS/WSI satellite LF system that had been a fixture since 1999 with a more-modern Vizrt-based satellite LF, not unlike the current HD Satellite LF. The finny thing is, I predicted (https://twctodayforums.com/forums/local-forecast/trammell-sightings/msg57756/#msg57756) this would happen nearly two years ago...
-
Now I hope we get a new SD LDL. I like the one on the HD LF and the new one on the SD LF. The current one is an eyesore IMO.

Is this how "advanced" animations are now able to be used on the SD satellite? Because I remember when they upgraded to the new graphics three years ago, I asked why they couldn't use animations, and someone said that is because the system cannot support such a thing.

NEW SD SATELLITE LOCAL FORECAST ON THE WEATHER CHANNEL - 5/25/11 PART 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItGj5S9mqls#)
and that was weird, I just had a power outage and when I tuned back on to TWC, the normal SD LF appeared again.

To anyone with dish... is the blue LDL back too?

I meant the IS-generated one.. because in your video it was gone

This is so much nicer!
The number of red boxes is quite scary, though. :(

WHAT?!!!!!! A NEW STANDARD SATELLITE LOCAL FORECAST!!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rxe0hjt5KI#)
-
Wonder if the city-by-city 3 day forecast is going to be discontinued now? I don't really like the national forecast they have in there to be honest. But this version is much nicer than what they have been using. And I agree, the national SD LDL does need some updating. It's quite ugly.
-
This is the obligatory "but the SD IStar still looks like s***" post.
How smooth is the SD version compared to the HD one? The HD one is very smooth and great...this looks just as good.
-
i'm not so sure about the rain and lightning on the base maps...quite distracting.

That's what I think too, Al. They really distract from the icons. :hmm:
And I wish TWC would keep the 3-day forecast or make it like a 5-day forecast that is on the HD satellite. That was more useful than the national map they are using.
EDIT: Never mind...the 5-day forecast is used on the 2-minute flavor. I still think it should be used on both the 1:30 and 2 minute flavors, though.

Funny they waited until now to do this, because I've heard that at some point this year, the analog version of TWC will be shut off (so SD and HD viewers will see the same thing; no different SD/HD sat LFs).

Wait.. do you mean just a format change, or actually shutting off AMC 11's analog feed?
-
I absolutely love the new LF! :D It looked so much better. When I first saw it, I thought it was the HD LF.
I think it will be like the squeezeback; it was tested for some time one day, but it wasn't actually implemented until a few days later.
-
I have yet to see this, only because I have cable and my parents just switched to Dish. I'm going to Duck Centro this weekend so I'll be able to see the new satellite LF in person. To me it looks a lot more like HD, without the prettiness and stuff. xD
-
I knew this was coming ever since TWC's major graphics update in late April.
The graphics are much worse than those on the 2008-2011 Satellite LF and on the HD feed.
-
When will they fully deploy it? The new sd lf looks nice but quality is atrocious in 4:3 format.
-
is it out yet? for those with istar's it hasnt been seen past 4:48 pm et yesterday ..
@matthew really? (about the hd lf part) its almost identical to the hd lf
-
WHAT THEY NEED TO UPDATE
1. Solid rain, snow, and severe shadings on the base maps. No lightning, no rain. Too distracting.
2. Remove the "Local on the 8's" bug. It doesn't look good anymore.
3. I don't like how it does the regional forecasts and then shows a national forecast. I just saw the forecasts!
4. I feel like they could do a national radar. Replace the national forecasts with temperature maps or the thunderstorm forecast.
-

Wait.. do you mean just a format change, or actually shutting off AMC 11's analog feed?
I mean the analog feed will be no more. It will be just like FOX News, FOX Sports Net, NBC primetime, etc. SD viewers will see letter boxing. No separate feeds anymore.
-

Yes, it's back.
-
if we keep seeing it around the 4pm-5pm slot it must be testing to be rolled out next week?

Oh just 4:3 SD. understandable
-
Will this also be used for the emergency feed?
-
Will this also be used for the emergency feed?
Probably.
And yes, it looks like TWC has implemented this today. Anyone with SD satellite can see it though, not sure what the posts about having I-STAR's has anything to do with this. :dunno:
-
not sure what the posts about having I-STAR's has anything to do with this. :dunno:
he was probably wondering if anyone saw it on the Intellstar's feed if the Istar failed to cue.
-
So basically what I'm reading out of this is that
this
(http://img546.imageshack.us/img546/9476/unleduu.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/546/unleduu.jpg/)
Uploaded with ImageShack.us (http://imageshack.us)
will replace
this on the SD feed
(http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/5149/56857994.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/822/56857994.jpg/)

which will mean the Satellite LF will be the same on the SD/HD feeds, only difference would be quality. Am I correct?
-
While the new SD satellite local forecast is very similar to the HD forecast, it's not 100% the same, and it's not simply an SD retransmission of the HD feed's forecast. But the SD forecast is designed to be very, very similar to the HD forecast.
And, if I understand this thread correctly, then, yes, the HD-similar forecast will replace the satellite forecast on the SD feed that's been around for so long.
-
Does the weather channel plan to broadcast in 10:9 on the SD feed like fox news?
-
A few things bother me about this new SD Satellite LF.
First up, on the flavors that I've seen, there are no Watches/Warnings page. This seems like an important part of the LF, because if you're seeing the satellite LF, that means you're not seeing a local STAR which would give you any information pertaining to severe weather watches or warnings that you may be under. The old SD Satellite LF had these products displayed first thing on the LF, because they're important, and the HD Satellite LF (which this new SD Satellite LF seems to based on) has the Watches/Warnings product. Why doesn't the new SD Satellite LF have the product? Why the SD version of the Satellite LF doesn't use the same flavor lineup as the HD version is beyond me, because they seem to be very similar in almost every other way.
Another is the radar/satellite loops. They seem to go by too quickly (only two loops) and they seem to be somewhat lagy and jumpy; the animation is anything but smooth. Another thing I've noticed is that the radar/satellite does show Severe Thunderstorm/Tornado watch polygons (like the HD Satellite LF and previous SD Satellite LF); however, on TWC's new radar system that they use for national segments, they don't show the watch polygons, they show the individual counties under the watch area, which seems to be the preferred way to display the watches, as noted by the SPC.

My thinking is they rushed it out and they "may" remove those day 2 and 3 forecast's page to show the the Thunderstorm and Precip forecasts (and show the Warnings pages if necessary like on the HD LF)

Billy, I couldn't agree with you more. Honestly, why didn't TWC make the flavor line-up of the new SD satellite the EXACT same as that of the HD satellite? :hammer: It would be much more consistent; the only thing they would need to have done was turn a 16:9 screen into 4:3 one.
-
I have no idea how 16:9 suddenly became 10:9.. I saw the post that said 10:9 but letterboxing SD is, in TV classes, simply known as letterboxed 16:9 on a 4:3 picture

EDIT: Oops Andy, you edited.. my mistake :bleh:

At 9:29 last night during the LWU, Adam's mic failed, so the emergency feed came on. However, the 2008-2011 SD Satellite LF graphics were being used. Maybe the new SD Satellite LF wont be used on the emergency feed?

The graphics may have not been integrated yet due to the LF being released on Thursday

IIRC, it took a few days for the new graphics to debut on the emergency feed after the normal satellite LF was updated on 5/21/08.

2. Remove the "Local on the 8's" bug. It doesn't look good anymore.
That's actually inserted by DirecTV and sometimes alternates with an ad that's exposed by a cutout on the top right of the screen on the recievers capable of having local on the 8's.
The MobiTV feed, which is basically the pure satellite feed without a star attatched to it, doesn't have the graphic.

Everyone knows that. It was actually directed towards DirecTV....
