I am just curious which version is favored the most. I am definitely going to have to say 8/15/05-12/12/06 is my personal favorite. I HATE the current intellistar. The new icons are horrible and ugly-looking. The background has no transitions and looks like a colored pencil drawing. The graphic on the text based forecast is a joke, with goofy unnecessary sound effects added.

Personally, I enjoy the new icons because they are more realistic...the version 2 of the new ones are better because you can see what the condition is no matter what the background is versus when they were debuted and you couldn't. I also like the 06/07 background because it was vibrant while not looking like a generic background. I will agree, though, that the new backgrounds and banners are like a 3rd grader colored something in paint. In defense of my vote, though, I still really like the original 4000 icons as well as the previous icons to the current ones. Maybe they'll add transitions soon...or perhaps just get rid of the current design and make it more appealing...

I like the previous version with the sun bg that the XL v3 uses even with the IS icons since they have grown on me except for a couple of them that stills looks ugly. The original version was ok,but it reminded me to much of the XL v2, and the current one is just plain crappy nothing else to it, I really wish they would change the graphics now.

I don't like the modified IS icons used on TWC's website or the Desktop Weather program, but the actual IS icons are not that bad, I like the Thunderstorm, Rain/Heavy Rain, and the snow ones the most, I hate the drizzle/showers/light rain ones they still look like light snow at times.

I miss the old icons, too. But, you have to keep in mind that they couldn't keep them forever because the look would go stale. Eight years was a long time. I do like the early IS, but as long as the STAR I have can give me weather information and data, that's all I care about.

I will say that the current icons aren't as bad as they COULD be...I mean, Accu-Weather has some of the worst icons available for television weather systems. Some actually look like a clown threw up on the screen.

My favorite versions in no. order are v1, v1.5 (with the old icons) and v2(current version). The current version is OK, but the only problem I has with is the sound effects (too disctracting, escpially the wind guster thing).

I like the first version because it was eaiser to see and had the time lapse bar on the radar. Two things I hate about the current version is that transitional effect on the bottom bar and the sound effects for the 36 hour forecast. The one thing I liked about version one is that one voice clip of Allen Jackson whenever he says: "Your local Doppler radar" instead of "Our local Doppler radar." I think its kind of annoying.

Why is that so hard to believe?? Despite what some people think you cant just have the same thing for over 8 years. Look at your local news. The graphics used to be simple, now they are flashy and advanced. Same with the IS. If you even want TWC to be around at all you should support any change that would help them keep viewers. The average person, 99.9999% of TWC viewers could care less about what the icon is. They are there for the weather. Sure I think we can all agree that the XL icons were great. The XL had a great local forecast but the equipment and software are outdated. Nothing can stay the same forever. I swear listening to some people is like hearing some old person complain.

'HATE' is such a strong word.. How about using 'Dislike' instead :)
on a practical post to this thread, i preffer the original theme, although when i watch videos of that theme on youtube, it feels as though the viewer is rushed through the LF. I am wondering if that was considered when using the current theme to use less page transitions, then the viewer doesnt feel as rushed through each product.

Yes, I realize that XL is outdated to this point. But no, I personally don't think that 8 years is all that long for those icons to have been there, especially since I was only 13 and a half when they were done away with. I barely remember seeing them anymore. They just bring back memories. I don't believe the Intellistar graphics are flashy and advanced at all, except for the LDL. The old background looked very clean and relaxing, with the sun, and awesome transitions that added to the local forecast. And yes, the vast majority of people just turn to TWC just for the weather, and don't care about the look. ON the other hand, there are those who DO care about what it looks like. Everyone has different interests and opinions. Plus, the icons have not brought them any viewers. TWC should have asked the opinions of their viewers, since they are a business solely there to provide to the consumers. I certainly feel blindsighted, since I never knew about any of the changes over the past 2 and a half years in advance. I was never able to get viable recordings of the IS in 2007, and now, I may never be able to.

socool775: Understood. But this a problem that to me feeds itself. I know the icons are never going back (unless I get control of the graphics someday), but I just don't want to accept it. This is something that I am interested in, and I never knew the changes were coming. It is for that reason that I refuse to accept it, thus perpetuating my problem with it.

But TWC just cant keep things forever. As far as consulting their viewers.... Well they don't have any really. The average person doesn't make some popcorn, sit on the couch and watch The Weather Channel that has the same information repeated over again. Do you watch CNN or other cable news networks for hours on end?
Its unfortunate you were young when the icon changed occurred but thats life I guess. TWC has to look for whats in its best interest. Technology is something TWC uses to help create interest in a channel many people dont spend more than 10min watching. With so much competition from the internet and other sources, TWC has to keep things fresh. Not trying to sound mean or harsh but its the truth.
Dont worry though, at some point in time TWC will do graphic changes again and perhaps choose something different that you will like.

Well, I will admit to you that I too have a hard time grasping that. It just is how it is. I can't and refuse to accept it, which is why it remains a problem.

Icons cause so many psychological problems. :P I like then XL ones better because I can see the rain better, but over time I got used to it. Seeing old XL videos on Youtube might bring back those good memories, Aaron. Plus, Martin and Brian have been both posting XL footage to Youtube, and that brought back some good XL memories back to me.

I like the current version. It's a change from the blue theme that was around for years, which got old.

From what I heard, not till the HD LF rolls out, which isn't anytime soon. Of course Tyler can confirm on any updates...

Doesn't match the current on air grahpics? Heck it didn't match the pre-HD graphics when this version came out 2 years ago either.

The intellistar never matched the on-air graphics during its six year run. Before this version, it used title bars from the 2001-2003 era. What's even more strange is that it debuted nationwide months after that era ended. :wacko: And I'll never understand why they made the outdated XL look like the on-air graphics in 2005 when the only change they made to the intellistar was the background and logo - still keeping those old title bars for another two years. Sometimes TWC comes up with the strangest ideas...

Definitely the first version. It was more pleasing to the eyes. Recent versions have moved to bright backgrounds, small weather icons, and complicated maps (making them hard to read).

I once thought about that too. At first, I orginally thought that the XL got a major upgrade back in March 2004 when the IntelliSTAR first came out, but I later found out that it turned out to be a whole new WeatherSTAR.

The Current Version is ok, but if TWC used the Templates from before the update with the current backgrounds it would look perfect
