Hit Songs on LOT8's Playlists
« on: December 29, 2011, 11:13:59 AM »
This is a topic to list different LOT8's tunes that were once hit songs in the mainstream music world.

I'll start...

Papa Was A Rollin' Stone - The Temptations became a #1 song in the US for one week (Nov. 26-Dec. 2, 1972), and was the #100 song of 1973 in the US as well.

"Layla" by Derek and the Dominos -  The song was chosen by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of their "500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll", and Rolling Stone ranked the song at #27 on their list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time". "Layla" was ranked #16 on VH1's "100 Greatest Songs of Rock and Roll", while Clapton's and Allman's guitar solos earned "Layla" a spot on Guitar World's list of the "100 Greatest Guitar Solos" at #14. It's not every day that a jazz song makes it into the Top 40 charts. With that being said...

"Morning Dance" by Spyro Gyra became a Top 40 hit in the United States, where it peaked at number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in July 1979. It remained in the Top 40 for eight weeks. Although Spyro Gyra is well-known and has sold millions of albums worldwide, this single is the band's sole U.S. top 40 hit to date.

Candy Dulfer and Dave Stewart's Lily Was Here actually almost made the top 10 (#11 on the Billboard Hot 100) back in 1990 or 1991.

"Green Onions" by Booker T & the MG's

"Green Onions" entered the Billboard Hot 100 the week ending August 11, 1962 and peaked at No. 3 the week ending September 29, 1962. The single also made it to No. 1 on the soul singles chart, for four non consecutive weeks: an unusual occurrence in that, on the soul singles chart, "Green Onions" fell in and out of top spot, three times.[6] On the UK Singles Chart it first appeared December 15, 1979 at #74, it then hit its highest position on January 26, 1980 at #7, it then left the charts on March 1, 1980 at #51, and ended up staying on the charts for a total of 12 weeks.

Herbie Hancock's Rockit made it to #6 on the R&B charts in 1983 and was a mammoth MTV hit.

The Ramsey Lewis Trio's instrumental version of "The 'In' Crowd" was recorded in 1965, the same year after Dobie Gray released his version. Their jazzy take, recorded live in a Washington, D.C. night club, reached #5 in the U.S.
