I've seen that drizzle and fog icon on my intellistar once or twice.

Saw that fog and drizzle icon a lot in the XL days, because KPIT reported fog and drizzle a lot.

Well I've seen the drizzle and fog icon many a time before, but notice how the icon I'm pointing out has the rain drops totally obscured. I'm used to  the drizzle and fog icon being just a fog cloud with three un-obscured rows of rain drops below it.

Also, why is it that most XL's have the main observation site also on the 8 city? There were some very nasty storms that went through TC and Petoskey last night, and the only reporting site on this XL's 8 city that is in the lower peninsula is Pellston. And that was on the north edge of the line of storms that moved through that area. As far as I've known, the thumb's XL is the only XL I've seen (in person) where the main CC site is not also on the 8 city.

All STARs are like this, including even a few intellistars (though it was a lot more common before HiRAD). In your case, it's  likely either because 1) there aren't enough airports in the area or 2) in case you missed the data on the first CC page.

A shortage of observation sites is far from an issue up here. Surprisingly, there are a lot of airports in the northland. For example, Traverse City, Cadillac, Bellaire (between TC and Petoskey), Petoskey, Charlevoix, Gaylord, Pellston, Cheboygan, Beaver Island, Mackinac Island, Chippewa Arpt (halfway between the bridge and the soo), Sault Ste Marie municipal, Newberry, Manistique, Marquette, Escanaba... just to name a few.

The icon your picture is the XL's official Light Drizzle & Fog icon. The other icon you're describing is just the Light Drizzle icon, when no fog is reported.

Also, why is it that most XL's have the main observation site also on the 8 city? There were some very nasty storms that went through TC and Petoskey last night, and the only reporting site on this XL's 8 city that is in the lower peninsula is Pellston. Almost all XL's have the main ob on the local obs screen, and as Mike said, most IntelliStars did pre-HiRAD. The reason they did that with the XL is pretty much because back in those days there weren't as many ob sites as there are today. The reason the STAR you described might not have the main ob in the local obs is that it was more recently configured (for the most part, they no longer insert the main ob in the local obs pages when there are enough other ob sites nearby). It could also be for the fact that the unit serves a very large area and they needed to get another ob point on the local obs in place of the main ob site.

The XL he was referring to (in Bad Axe/Pigeon) has only been serving that area since 2006, so you're probably right Tyler.

I dunno if things are different now for IntelliSTARs, but as of July 2009, 24629 didn't have the main Obs site in the latest obs. Main CC site is Downtown Tampa.
I've gone off on a journey to be a moderator at another forum, but this place will forever remain home for me~

That's normal - most Intellistars don't have the main ob site on the 8-cities now that there's HiRAD and trupoint to cover virtually any city.

Man, my STAR has been out since Wednesday morning. I tried e-mailing FPB from their website, no luck. Not good, especially since we had a close call with severe tonight...

Well golly, my Intellistar just froze on me, except this time I saw it live. Froze several times during the LF, and then aborted halfway into the text based. This has been happening a lot the past couple of months, but I'm not so sure I should report it. More pressing issues, imo.

Funny you should mention about the 8th city thing. When Brian modified the xl coding to accept emulator data the CC and 8th city data being inputed had to be the same or it would throw a fit
