Wow - I've never seen an Almanac page without data!  That information is supposed to be generated from within the Intellistar unit itself, based on geographic location, so it's "technically" not supposed to ever expire, since it can be created even without a data feed from TWC.

Guess this picture proved my theory wrong!

That's what I thought, but I guess my unit didn't have enough time to calculate this data right after the reboot. In case any one is wondering what an IntelliStar looks like with absolutely no data, today's your lucky day. :P

That must be very rare... all of my videos that have unavailable data still have almanac information in it (but with moons instead of temperatures).

Right - that's the way it should be.  Temperature data requires a data feed from TWC, while moon data is calculated directly on the Intellistar itself.  Actually, all of the Stars calculate this data on their own, along with sunrise and sunset information, which is why the Almanac page should never expire or be "unavailable."  So that's why this photo really surprised me.

I mentioned a while back about the XL that my area had, and how it seldom worked properly.  There were many times (especially in the morning) when data kept expiring without getting updated, so there were a lot of "temporarily unavailable" screens, but the Almanac page, if nothing else, always behaved properly.

In case any one is wondering what an IntelliStar looks like with absolutely no data, today's your lucky day. :P

It would be nice if an Intellistar could simply not cue for a local forecast and show the national broadcast instead if it has absolutely no information to show.

At least an Intellistar still looks "pretty" with no data.  I remember the days when the WeatherStar 4000 or, even worse, the WeatherStar III had no data.  Nothing's worse than looking at three minutes (remember when local forecasts used to take longer than the blink of an eye?) of a blue screen saying "No report" and such.

Well, at least your Intellistar wasn't 100% without information... it did have a radar/satellite frame to show in the LDL. :)

Random memory, speaking of the WeatherStar III.  We were under a tornado watch, so the brown screen appeared with the scrolling warning.  In the middle of its second repeat, a tornado warning was issued, but instead of the red screen completely replacing the brown screen, the red began right at the first line of the warning, scrolling up along with the text and replacing the brown.  When the warning had finished after a couple of repeats, the red ended at the last line, scrolled up, and we saw the brown again appearing from underneath the red, and that stayed on for one more repeat of the watch before returning to the national broadcast.  This would have been in the summer of 1991 or 1992 at the absolute latest, and was the only time I ever saw such an "effect" on the WeatherStar III.  Never saw it on the WeatherStar 4000 when it also scrolled the red warnings before putting them on the LDL line.

This is unrelated, and I have no idea why I was just thinking of this... but remember the days of the L-bar? And how when the L-bar was first cued it needed an extra second or two to render the radar images (thus why viewers would see "Local Doppler Radar" before the mini radar actually appeared? I wonder if they worked that issue out for the mini radar on the LDL, or if that's why the data itself (text and all) takes a second or two to pop-up once the blue background rises up from the bottom of the screen.

Looks to me like that issue was addressed.

On another note, not that it's a huge deal, one of my teachers' dad lives up in Traverse City, on the opposite corner to where I found that XL. I asked her to send some snapshots of each of the STARs to him, asking which one he sees. According to his response, that same XL I found serves the entire city. I still don't think even the winter (permanent) population is low enough to allow an XL to serve that area. I understand it does not directly correlate with population or demographics, but this is pushing limits.

I'm really starting to rethink months of learning about demographics and what is involved in what type of STAR unit I find. I found Michigan's 6th known XL in Sault Ste Marie, MI.

That's because the star type doesn't necessarily have to do with demographics.

Yeah, I have. Really nothing special. The size of the font in relation to the icon makes it look like it's screaming at me.

Also, odd to hear "Locomotion" by James Brown at 6:18 PM EDT...

That would be a nice song to bring back.

Frank Mitchell: Jetsons?
Hakeem: Yeah, you and George got the same haircut.

Well shifting back to the subject of rarely seen icons for a moment, has anyone seen the one for Sawyer there? I've seen the drizzle/fog icon many times, but this one looks new for some reason

I didn't think they put "text" icons on the Week Ahead screen because the text below the icon takes care of that.  Is this something new? :dunno:
