Future of the WeatherSTARs 4000 and Jr.
« on: September 01, 2008, 03:44:44 AM »
It's been 18 years since when the 4000 first came out and 15 years since when the Junior was released. Lately, most of these 4000s and Juniors are aging and becoming badly degraded. Also, I noticed that most 4000s and Juniors are not sounding their warning tones (like how the 3000 was durring its late days). Does anyone think that the FCC will soon ring the death bell for the 4000 and Junior?

Well, the FCC doesn't care at all about the graphics degradation all they care about is the warning tones. Now, this problem is usually either a non-connected or malfunctioning warning tone unit. (I dunno the actual name of it) Which would not be the actual STARs fault.

I have no idea at this point, how many times this has been asked/discussed.

They are not going anywhere.

BTW, I've never heard of a Junior having degradation. :dunno:

The 4000's warning system is built in, but can also accomodate an external system.
The Jr. doesn't have a built in system altogether.

Jr.'s don't degrade, primarily because THEY HAVE NO GRAPHICS.

As for the 4000...for the most part, the degradation on those does not interfere with a person's ability to see the information being presented.

In short, I don't expect to see either unit go anywhere for some time to come.

I spotted some degration on a Junior. Here are some examples from the State College Junior. Notice the mixed up characters.

Lastly, even most Juniors are not sounding their alert tones whenever it displays a severe weather message. Again, here's the same STAR:

Again, these 4000s and Juniors and starting to age and the public must be warned about severe weather.

That isn't degradation. It's one of many glitches on the Junior.
