Expanded Local on the 8s
« on: June 01, 2010, 01:51:50 AM »
Here is a video clip from last week of Jeff Morrow's Expanded Local on the 8s segment he does here every weekday morning from 7-9am at:10 and :40 after. He uses a variety of customized, local  maps during each segment. Some segments are geared more toward Metro Pittsburgh (current conditions fly through of Allegheny county, etc), while this recording has more regional maps.

I like this a lot.  I don't see how they can do it for every major locale in a day, but this is neat.  Not a big fan of the LDL as presented - need to go to the blue bar or get the blue backdrop so it doesn't look weird.

Not bad but I thought this would be more like a 3 min LF flavor.

I'll try to get a clip of the other maps he uses, the promo, and the live LF opener he does saying "Hey Pittsburgh, stay tuned for you live expanded local on the 8s in just 2 minutes."

Not bad, I like how it's all hard-core weather and traffic and no live reports. But, is there any reason as to why they chose to do Pittsburgh over anything else? Back in the 90's TWC used to have a similar segment like this for NYC viewers, though obviously they chose that since that was the most heavily populated and congested area.

Wouldn't shock me if it's a trial run.

No particular reason was given as to why Pittsburgh was chosen. Though Jeff Morrow is from Pittsburgh. And yes, it is a trial run, however the trial was supposed to be over more than a month ago and it's still going.

Does it utilize dual-feed? If so, I bet it's because of the Penn Hills STAR, known for being a trial IS in the past.

It would be really cool if they could broadcast something like this simultaneously for every city, but I think that's impossible. This is really cool, though. The segment is very information-filled. :D

I like this idea, too. :D  I don't know if it's possible for TWC to do one for every major city, but it would sure be nice to see it.

Well they could certainly improve on it though. If I were TWC, I would revamp those weather.com videos with some decent tv graphics and perhaps a little more content, then send them to the area STARS as well as post them online

What if ALL IntelliSTAR's in one region broadcasted the same forecast? (EX: Northeast Forecast, Southeast Forecast, etc.)

Those online videos are the biggest pile of rubbish I've ever seen.  South Bend, Indiana's regional maps (since there isn't a dedicated forecast) are centered over North Carolina.
