Title: Emergency Feed Sightings
Post by: beanboy89 on May 04, 2012, 02:41:36 PM
No topic for this yet...

Long-form blacked out at 2:38 PM ET and was replaced by the emergency feed until the 2:40 commercial break.

Dense Fog Advisory + Forecast Glitch - 10/13/12 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhgeY-MCIdY#ws)

According to this video (courtesy of MemphisTWC) the emergency feed was cued following an LF when a live weather update failed to appear. It happened at around 2AM ET this morning.

The emergency feed appeared at 12:18PM PT during the squeezeback segment in place of the LWU camera feed (the squeezeback graphics were functioning as normal.)

I heard "If I Could" by Phish play at :08 during the second half of the LF (the first half was silent) so I'm pretty sure the EF cued during this LF, but I did not see the feed.

I'm very suspicious with the sudden ditching of squeezeback locals during longform. Could it be tomorrow that we see the demise of full screen LOT8s? 5/6 was the start of new programming changes including new series as stated during TWC's upfront months back, but I wouldn't think it would be that soon.

And even though I didn't want to, I decided to message Melissa recently about this and I got no reply..so this will something to look out for.

Our system has no IS2 and the emergency feed was just on as the national feed had just the LDL with a black screen after the LOT8's.

It just came on again in place of the national local forecast.

Checked on the SD feed which has the IS it had the local forecast with no music.

I don't mind the graphics, but it's distracting when the map tilts in between each daypart. And the icons, please, make it so they're all in sync with each other.  :hammer:

I like the smoothness of the radar/satellite loops as opposed to before, but the day-by-day maps are just awful.  You get seasick watching them!  Even worse, the maps themselves transition from one view to the next smoothly, but the precipitation drawings don't transition - they just jump from one slide to the next.

Wow!  They have a Storm Reports map on the Emergency Feed?! :o  I wonder what other hidden treasures it contains?  I don't think we've seen the new Emergency Feed loop all the way through yet, have we?

Maybe this is a sign of things to come for the LOT8s.  I almost wish the EF would replace the regular national satellite, as the graphics on the EF are much clearer and match those with what TWC currently has on-air.  The only thing I wish could be better is, as Eric said, those day-by-day maps.
Title: Re: Emergency Feed Sightings
Post by: phw115wvwx on June 25, 2013, 04:52:11 PM
I personally feel the Storm Reports map belongs on the individual LFs when there's severe weather around.  Having all the storm reports cluttered on a national map with no legend or specifics to tell you anything doesn't really help.  I can't tell you how much I wished the LF catered more to significant weather situations with actual graphics of the warning polygons on the screen and information about the closet warning to you in a text box.  It does make you wonder what else is in the present-day emergency feed that might be valuable and should be in the actual LF lineup.
Title: Re: Emergency Feed Sightings
Post by: WeatherWitness on June 26, 2013, 01:03:35 AM
What I am quite confused about is how (and more importantly, why) the EF went from this very simplistic set of screens (no transitions, animated icons, etc.) to this rather fancy display with map transitions, animating icons, and fresh new graphics.  I did not think the EF had the capability of doing this.  Furthermore, why the heck make something you hope to never have to show this fancy?  With the exception of the day-by-day map transitions, I honestly would prefer the EF over the current national satellite.  It looks stunning on a big HD TV.

Additionally, as Patrick mentioned, why save the "good stuff" (like a storm report map) for the EF?  That would be something very useful on a regular, local LF.  Unfortunately, these are probably questions that cannot be answered at this point.  With this talk of a supposed LoT8s revamp, maybe this is a sign of things to come.

The new EF is running off of TruVu Max, not WPS like we all know and love..
Title: Re: Emergency Feed Sightings
Post by: Mike M on June 26, 2013, 06:08:50 PM
TWC needs to work off the bugs in TruVu before debuting these things to the public. Even the radar/satellite transitions are terrible; the radar frames constantly lag when the maps shift, as do the title bar animations. And of course the icons are still out of sync.

The new emergency feed reminds me of TWC's old satellite LFs circa mid-late 90s.

Now that I've seen the emergency feed with radar, I stand behind this statement even more. It looks like I'm basically watching an HD and slightly flashier version of a Satellite LF from 1998.

Bobby Arnold - Daydreamer
Gooding - Montana Girl
The Smiths - Oscillate Wildly
Moby - Rushing
Ryan Farish - Searching
Gooding - Station

Actually most of the issues you mentioned are more the problem of poor setup rather than the software. TruVu is very powerful and remarkable software. I use it daily at my job. The radar data is selected to pause whenever the camera shifts. That could be turned off. The title bar animations are the result of the graphic effect (in this case they are use "light sheen") is added to each show element/slide rather than to the overall show. That means it resets each time the graphic changes. This could be made to look a lot better with a little tweaking.

I saw a comment earlier asking why they would change to something so fancy/complex. This is actually so much simpler and easier to manage than the old EF. TruVu Max runs off of Windows so it could just be a matter of restarting the application or a restart if the system needed to be rest.

There are some performance issues in this show that could be the result of dated hardware. Probably a machine was refurbished or repaired and they figured it was good enough for this. With slower hardware, graphics had to be pre-rendered so that they were smooth. Now processing power is so good it can be rendered in real time. The older the system the more it struggles doing it on the fly.

The Local Forecast and the national version for those who don't have the IS or or IS2 are not running and we are getting the emergency feed.

On the national HD feed it has a black screen and the national LDL when there is no local forecast then the emergency feed kicks in.
TWCHD 20131002 0859 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e00rfIYSbB0#ws)

On the SD channel were are still getting the IS local LDL bar at the bottom with local information.
Title: Re: Emergency Feed Sightings
Post by: Eric on October 02, 2013, 10:30:58 AM
I just tuned in at 10:29.  The cloud/TWC logo was where the LDL should have been, and when the "Wake Up With Al" segment started again, the national LDL is being shown instead of the IS2.  (My cable company repeats the HD feed on the SD channel, so I can't comment on what the SD feed's doing here.)

I'll have to wait a few minutes to see what happens with the local forecast.

Edit at 10:42: The IS2 local forecast came on just fine, and now the IS2 LDL is working again, too.

Edit at 10:50: The national feed HD local forecast came on, and the IS2 LDL was on for about half of it.

They filled in the commercial and LOT8's time with live forecast segments from ATL then went back to WUWA on tape from 6am.

Update: TWC is still having tech problems.
The EF showed up during the commercials and then a promo graphic was stuck on the screen till they went back to storm coverage.

Looks like TWC's playout computer is experiencing some issues. Sounds like someone doesn't want Highway thru Hell airing

They just went to break and this was stuck on the screen till commercials started to play.
More storm coverage as I guess they can't get the long form programming to play.

That was when they aired the Local on the 8s. I guess for Star units only?
