I just saw my first Daypart forecast on the Intellistar in a long, long time. Too bad it's not on more often.
Edit: I just realized why - the local radar is unavailable, so it's shown for a considerably shorter period of time. The radar picked the "perfect" time to go out - there are a lot of thunderstorms in the area. At least one of the local stations has its own 24/7 weather station with radar... and it's not post-NBC. :)
-
My radar is currently frozen, but not unavailable...
-
The daypart seems to have returned to regular usage at :58. As well, the regional maps were replaced with the metro maps. I like these changes. :)

I heard Vivan Brown explain within the past half-hour or so that they're having problems with the radars. Even the radar map she was using in the studio didn't look so good - it had empty frames and what there was didn't have a long loop. It's just now starting to update again - on the local forecast, the satellite/radar screen has one frame, and the local radar has a couple already.

Is that for all Intellistars? I can't even remember the last time I saw the Daypart in Boston.

Both of my Intellistars show these changes, so yes.
-
I've always seen the Daypart Forecast...
-
There have indeed been changes to the Intellistar playlists this week.
-
Looks like there need to be some changes made to the Flavor Lineups on the TWCT page....
https://twctodayforums.com/isflavors.html (https://twctodayforums.com/isflavors.html)
-
The only changes I've noticed on the IntelliStar here is that some of the products have been moved around. Like for example the metro map for CC is shown before the 8 city observations now.
-
There have indeed been changes to the Intellistar playlists this week.
Has that really long change been made yet?

Yes, the 7 day is now ~15 seconds.
Also, FYI, the school day and outdoor screens are officially dead. The getaway has lost some priority as well and won't show nearly as often.
-
Also, FRI, the school day and outdoor screens are officially dead. The getaway has lost some priority as well and won't show nearly as often.
Thank goodness!
-
I saw the daypart forecast today at 2:38 PM ET on 27100, during the time the radars were out.. is this part of the change?
Also, anyone with Marine/Tides on their STARs, is the daypart forecast back on those? 24629 never got it since the December 2010 product playlist update due to the marine/tides screens taking priority.
-

My guess is that the daypart was used to fill time, since the Star doesn't show the radar when it's not available for long.

As I said earlier, this is the first I've seen the daypart in a long time, and this counts two coastal Stars: Boston and Daytona Beach.
-
a necessary change should be Radar/Satellite on every flavor on Marine Stars (even with precip on radar), i barely see it on any of my star's lineups.
-

Getaway only shows at :28 now. I never really cared much for that anyways.

Stay tuned tomorrow for another change or two.

More changes to the flavor lineup... or to the website?

Hope it's something good!

I have a funny feeling most people will disapprove.
-
Oh god no, I hope it's not what I think it is...
-
Hmm...something I would disapprove of seeing on the IntelliStar...could it be the traffic products returning?
-
Hmm...something I would disapprove of seeing on the IntelliStar...could it be the traffic products returning?
I didn't think of that... I actually don't really mind the traffic products as long as vital products like the almanac and daypart aren't bumped out for it. What I was thinking was a change that even non-STAR viewers would disapprove...
-
if it is Traffic at least its something i wouldn't mind returning. (especially with the 20+ seconds of extra music towards the end of the LF)
SigAlert or TrafficPulse
-
Not traffic.
-
I think I know what "change" you're talking about. It totally caught me off guard.
-
a little added text to the 7 day isn't something i disapprove :dunno:
hopefully if there is a "two" it's a bigger change than above.
-
Now, on the 7-Day forecast, the text is reading:
Have a question regarding the Local On The 8's? Go to weather.com/local
-
Ew, gross.
Well, that was my first reaction, but you start to get used to it. I'm surprised TWC is promoting their website even further, despite how popular it already is.
If there is another change, I hope it's a change to these stale graphics. I heard that the graphics will be getting updated eventually.
-
here's the redirect
http://www.weather.com/tv/programs/local-on-the-8s.html (http://www.weather.com/tv/programs/local-on-the-8s.html)
the provide feedback takes you to the generic contact us page.
-
IMO, the text makes it too cluttered. The Low Temperatures being in a smaller font I like, but the text should be only one line, where it is not as cluttered. Maybe saying "Additional Forecasts At Weather.com" like the old Satellite Forecast.
PS: Tyler, is this the change that you were talking about that we wouldn't like? Is there more to come today?
PSS: Tyler, can you change the title to "IntelliStar Changes", since we aren't just talking about the Daypart anymore? ;)
-
Sorry for the double post, but now it's reading this at the bottom of the 7 Day...."Detailed travel weather forecasts and conditions available now at weather.com". I think they cycle.
-
i don't get why Getaway is even shown anymore, unless there is some demand i didn't hear about.
reason i post is because i spoke to someone within TWC and i was told in April that there is "Nothing happening in the next few weeks except for that the Getaway forecast will be removed."
unless there was some radical change to keep it i don't know.
-
The weather.com plug on the 7-Day also appears on the IS2. Since it's taking up that dead space at the bottom of the screen, I don't mind it.
-
Change as seen on the IS2 (courtesy Theweatherchannelman on YouTube)
-
IMO, they really should keep it at one line, such as "Additional forecasts at weather.com." Two lines really makes the rest of the data look crappy and pushed together, and something that was done by a first grader.
-
For the last time, no new graphics any time soon.
Personally, I think it's pretty ugly, especially on the SD STAR.
-
would've been nice if the other addition "if there was one" was to show the 24hr local forecast on every lf (Today/Tonight) so more segments/screens could show.
-

It's definitely ugly on the SD IS, but the HD one is not that bad because there was space for it. It looks cluttered on the SD IS.
-
A better way to do this IMO would be to either take the local info off the LDL during the 7 day and display the text there, or take the LDL away altogether and display the text more central to the bottom of the 7 day and the bottom of the screen. That would make it less cluttered.

I think it would be disadvantageous to remove the LDL just for the sake of an ad for weather.com.
-
But it's disadvantageous to have a weather.com ad in the LF altogether. So if they must do it, might as well make it look decent.
-
I wonder if the STAR Team would take requests on the subject...
-
I wouldn't bet my XL on that...lol.
I will admit it's pretty unnecessary. As said before, it would be much better to be short and sweet--"Additional forecast at weather.com." But NBC felt it was necessary, and we'll just have to deal it.

I like your first idea best. Or, just put the ad on the ad crawl or upper right corner where it belongs. ;)
I wonder if the STAR Team would take requests on the subject...
No. That would fall under public relations' hands.
-
I don't like it, but I don't have the intellistar, so I can't really complain about it.
-
I don't really have a problem with it. :noexpression:

I am very sick of hearing every change blamed on NBC. It's gotten very old, everyone.
-

Thank you... NBC has owned TWC for three years now so I think we can give that all a break already. Also NBC doesn't make every single little change you see on air.

Yes thats very true. It's quite easy to blame NBC over something we don't like about TWC and that really isn't fair.
-
There's no reason to start a blame game when we don't know any of the facts. Can I make a request on behalf of everyone and ask to not blame or mention NBC for anything unless it's proven through hard evidence that they were really involved? After all, TWC is a company in its own right that can do whatever it wants whether we like it or not.

I can confirm the Marine/Tides STARs here use the daypart again with the change, but why is the getaway still being shown?

Hopefully this isn't the only change throughout the whole year.

that's on my star also this is the only difference on the :58

The getaway has lost some priority, but hasn't been completely canned yet. From what I hear, however, it's days are numbered.
-
Have the regional forecast maps been removed also?
-

Nope, I saw one today.

There are also weather-triggered statements that can appear in the 7 day. Here are examples on the SD and HD STARs:

Outta curiosity, will the getaway segment be discontinued too on the DirecTV LF app if you know?
-
I think that's an interesting feature. It makes me think of it as a weather bulletin, but instead of being alerted on an issued watch/warning/advisory, you're being warned on specific upcoming severe weather.

Add Hammond, La. to that list.

I saw it earlier tonight at work and I think it's straight B.S. if you ask me. That's the LAST thing I wanted to see.
Not sure if that made it to DirecTV.
EDIT: It is not on the DirecTV LO8s.

Better yet, why not give it a line on the LDL and it can scroll across the screen when it pops up.
-
Anyone know if the city list of observations has been discontinued for good?
-
Composite_20110727_0241.ts (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qofhXI_nhw4#)
Is that a temporary thing? Or a new one minute high speed flavor with no ad crawl featuring the return of the 24 hour forecast.
-
I am very sick of hearing every change blamed on NBC. It's gotten very old, everyone.
I didn't mean my post to be interpreted that way, and I didn't mean to label NBC for the change. To be honest, I don't even remember why I put that in my post. That's another point in my life when I really just needed to shut up and keep my mouth closed because I often say the wrong thing at the wrong time. This also goes for my real life out of the forums, and it bit me in the :censored: again. Hopefully this will end the controversy. My apologies.
Also, I don't give a :censored: about the change anymore. It's just text on the bottom of a screen! It doesn't impact any part of my life whatsoever at this point. It's very trivial and petty (hardly even a change at all...big change all right), and I don't think anyone should complain about it anymore. It's so old.

Hopefully a page like the Radar/Satellite when Local Radar shows (especially on the marine Stars) or a Regional Page will take it's place.
does days numbered mean a couple weeks?
-
Anyone know if the city list of observations has been discontinued for good?
Apparently not. I just saw it on my IStar at 9:28AM PT
-
Anyone know if the city list of observations has been discontinued for good?
No, but that has lost priority as well. It shows at :28/:58 but only if there's no precip.
-

The only thing that shows up on the :28/:58 on Marine Stars is the Metro CC with/without precip.

I believe They removed the 8 city observations from my STAR. I haven't seen it since the change to the 7 Day.

I saw it last night at :28.

You're not alone i haven't seen it on any of my area's flavors.
-
As I said before, I don't think losing the 8-city observations screen is any big loss. The regional and metro maps look so much better, but the 8-city list is simply left over from the days of the original text-only Stars. If memory serves, I think the "Latest Observations" screen was even used on the WeatherStar I!

I agree, it's not a big deal to have it as a product anymore. 5 out of the 8 cities listed on the metro map on the IntelliStar here was on the observation page.
-
I've only seen the 36hr Local Forecast since 10:08pm EDT on my Star, i hope they use the 24hr instead.

Hmm, now it's back. I saw it not too long ago.
-
I agree, it is outdated and the map looks much nicer and also is better to have a geographically perspective on the weather anyway.
-

Right when i posted this the Overnight and Morning Dayparts are still using the 48hr Local Forecast
-
The only STARs that the 8-cities were useful for were the FiOS STARs since they served larger areas, and as such the 8-cities would show completely different cities than the metro map. I don't mind it seeing it gone otherwise.
I've only seen the 36hr Local Forecast since 10:08pm EDT on my Star, i hope they use the 24hr instead.
I agree they should show the 24-36 hr on 1:30 forecasts instead of 36-48... it allows more time for other products to show.
-
There are also weather-triggered statements that can appear in the 7 day. Here are examples on the SD and HD STARs:
Any word on if they're using this feature with Don's impending landfall?
-
My IntelliStar 2 doesn't show any text in the big box during the 7 day forecast. :dunno:
-
I don't know what to say about that. It's probably just a glitch and it should come back. If not, maybe it didn't get the update, but it's not a huge loss. I'm not the person to ask because I'm a noob, apparently.
I think the 8-city observations are useless on the IS since all the cities are only 30 miles or so less from each other. Like the weather will be drastically different on a regular basis from that distance. In that respect, I just think it's redundant to have that at all when there is the map. I do like seeing the wind speeds, though.
-

The meteorologists have to trigger those alerts, just like they do for large weather events on weather.com.
-
the Getaway seems to be removed, i'm seeing the AQ screen and Metro Today/Tonight pages at :28 now
-
Glad to see the daypart back on 24629
-

No big loss?! It's a huge loss! It's the worst thing they could have done. That was my very favorite thing about the IntelliStar! I strongly disagree. There's an old saying, "if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it."
Also, the 8-city list is not left over from the screen used on the first WeatherStar. It was 7 cities on those STARs from that one through the 4000 and 8 cities, beginning with the XL.
-
I still see the Getaway Forecast on the shorter LF's after a show like Storm Stories.
I would like the 8-city observations if the cities weren't so close to each other in distance. In my case, they used to have Alexandria (100 miles north) and Lake Charles (80 miles or so west), but instead there are cities like Opelousas (20 miles north) and Crowley (20 miles west). I would miss the 8-city list, but I could live without it. My guess is that that would be the next thing to lose even more priority after the Getaway.
-
Also, the 8-city list is not left over from the screen used on the first WeatherStar. It was 7 cities on those STARs from that one through the 4000 and 8 cities, beginning with the XL.
The number of cities may vary by one, but the idea is the same. Back in the days before the Star was capable of generating maps, a text-based list of cities was the only way to show weather conditions in the region. The 7-city text-only list still exists on 4000s, and it was upgraded to an 8-city graphical-based 2-screen list with the XL. But why settle for what is still a list when a map shows essentially the same (except for winds) in a better-looking format?
-
Because that is reason why I like the IntelliStar so much. The 7 city list on the older stars, varied by distance, but were usually at least 50 miles to 150 miles away, the same way with the 8 city list on the XL. However, with the IntelliStar, the list is more localized with names of cities/towns that are only 60 miles away, at a maximum in most cases. That was so neat!
Also, like you said, the wind was featured and is no longer featured since they took this part of the IntelliStar off.
To me, this is like the last OCM to have been there since the late 80s being let go and no longer on TWC or "I Saw Three Ships" by David Arkenstone to no longer being on the Christmas music playlist.
-
Well I saw the list today.
-

It still looks weird with out any words in the box.

You two have the same IS2, according to the ID # in your profile fields

The empty box issue has been resolved. Thanks for the heads-up.

The idea is genius, I just wish it was automatic based off the forecast. Blizzard, hurricane, tornado outbreak, etc.

New Flavor? (Tonight Metro Forecast with 48hr Outlook) this only appeared once today.
New 2 Minute Flavor during Day Planner 12:58pm EDT (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHWMDcuef0A#)
-
It can't be too new...I'm pretty sure that variant has been seen here (with the Tides/Marine switched for the Almanac page).
-
it's new to me because compared to this video it hasn't shown up since (they must've cut time off one segment for Tonight's Metro Forecast to show)

The severe weather message got triggered on this STAR

If I had to be *extremely* picky, I would say that the red box is not centered on Sunday's column. :club:
But anyway, :P. These messages now on the Weekly Planner are reminding me of what they do on weather.com with the red boxes that say "severe" on them, either on the current conditions or on the 24-Hour Forecast.
-
If I had to be *extremely* picky, I would say that the red box is not centered on Sunday's column. :club:
We had the red box in my area a few days ago when we thought Emily would be a strong tropical storm or minor hurricane potentially making landfall in or near central Florida, and, you're right, the red box doesn't seem to be perfectly lined up with the column of the day being referenced.

36 Hour Text-Based Forecast in a better place 8/6/11 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5m393WoUXo#)
That's fine and all, but for me I think it's fine being right before the week ahead, that's the only product I'm going to want to see after the text forecast. I'm not interested in having to sit through looking at a metro map displaying the same info I just read (and had read to me for that matter), a getaway forecast because I don't "get away" that much, an air quality forecast, and an almanac/tides if I was living near the Atlantic ocean. That's why I like the 4000 so much, it's simple and straight to the point.
-
I have a feeling they have the text based and 7 day in the end intentionally to get more viewership. They likely rely on these two products over everything else, so they place other products in before them. Just like in news where the weather and sports segments are towards the end of a newscast... to get more viewers to stay tuned to their channel.

I'm pretty sure you're right, Mike. This is the information I would want most, so I would just turn the TV off or change the channel if the 36-hour came on early in the LOT8s flavor lineup. It's funny all the combinations/orders the ISTAR information could have, and I personally am just to used to what it has (mostly) been for the past several years. I couldn't see the flavor lineups changing drastically.
-
Just because they're hasn't been a change in several years doesn't mean a change like this won't happen in the future.
but Tavores you have to think of the other viewers in the viewing Area who don't live in the Headend's City/Town, they rather see their coverage area's info at the end for example "Fall River/Wareham" or North Kingstown/Newport"(Maps/AQ/Marine) basically what my video shows.
-
For a time in 2008, TWC was experimenting with placing the Getaway Forecast between the text-based forecast and the Week Ahead. IIRC, this was to try to get more viewership of the Getaway Forecast (at the time, I believe Getaway sponsors had just been or were going to be implemented).

Back when they were still in use, I had a 19" analogue TV, a very decent one, too, and even up close I could never tell the difference between the rain and snow icons. Showers looks like a grey blob under clouds. Sunshine looked like a vague point of light. I hated those icons. I know people complain so much about the current ones ("cheese," and so on), but I love them so much. They're instantly recognizable as what they're supposed to be while realistic enough to make sense. I don't recall anyone making fun of the 4000's icons, yet they'll make fun of the "cheese"?

They are better than the old set yes, but I remember when I first saw the sleet icon this past January, it looked like how snow was displayed on the old set. It would have helped if they kept the animation of the sleet bouncing since that's what sleet does when it falls.
Here's an example, look at the observation for College Park at 0:24.

The Getaway has been gone on the :58 since the new flavors debut, and yes it seems its no longer on :28 as of today.

now that Getaway is gone TWC should create a page called Flight Status for local airports in the Region
Airports in my area are
TF Green Int'l Airport (http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/businesstraveler/airportprofile/PVD) - Providence, RI
Logan Int'l (http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/businesstraveler/airportprofile/BOS) - Boston, MA
Manchester-Boston Arpt (http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/businesstraveler/airportprofile/MHT) - Manchester, NH
and it would display if there is Delays on arrival and departures in those locations.

That's actually not a bad idea, that would be useful to a lot of frequent flyers.

The Intellistar LDL used to have that in a right-to-left scroll. I'm not sure if TWC would even consider making it a product in the local forecast, though, especially considering it already features on Weatherscan.

Since a lot of people probably don't get WeatherScan, I think an airport delays screen would be excellent for the IS. Heck, on videos I watched, it was supposed to be a product on the IS2. :club:

My extended forecast doesn't have the advertisement text at the bottom?
