In Denton, Texas of all places.
-
That's not far from Dallas, wow TX must be full of older stars
-
It seems they're slowly phazing out the 4000s here in TX.
I feel like FTPing the XL to extract some files if I have the know-how.

How could you possibly FTP into the XL?

Thanks. I just happened to find it under my friend activity on Youtube.
-
Did this star replace the 4000 that was there?
-
Here's the Effingham, IL XL.
I also had to put that XL on Wikipedia's Database.

That's the thing, I couldn't.
BTW, nice find on that XL, Chris.

You might find that there will be an XL in Norfolk, VA soon too :P haha while that method is not the one i would choose it may be possible to extract content from the xl

It would be impossible. The only connections that the XL has is a One-Way, Client-Server connection. No internet or anything.

However you could simply pull the drives out and go through them right?

Unless it uses some proprietary file system, yes.

I found out the file system it uses, XFS. I found a driver for it in Windows, but don't know anything about it. If you need any help just throw me a line and i'll be glad to.

From? How the heck do you get access from this stuff.

Yeah, I never understood how people here are able to have special connections with people and get special things like an XL, especially since their under 18.

I wanted to know that as well. How did he get that Junior from TWC as well? Does he have some special contact with TWC?

That's what I'm wondering. He's probably got a garage full of Star Systems. :P

Wait, Martin's under 18?
-
It says 17 in his profile.
-
Wow, I thought he was older than that. :D
-

I also don't get why some people here are able to have connections with people at TWC about what is going to happen with TWC in the future, future WeatherStar updates, etc.
Yeah, Martin is 17 according to his profile.
-
Rings a bell....like how Tyler also got those screenshots of the DirecTV lf 2 days before it came out?
-

Sometimes that's a matter of sheer luck. It was for me. I just happened to cross path's with a guy who happens to be a former employee and still has many insider connections. I think it was very much a mater of luck for Matt and Tyler as well.

I'll take an XL burger, and some 4000 fries please!
I thought Martin was like 15.

Haha ok guys let me clarify some things, I am indeed 17 :P
I do have some connections with TWC and the star team. Nothing major, just some names and emails. As for the star units I do indeed have a WeatherStar Jr. It is in working condition and quite nice. I purchased it from a guy who was shutting down his small cable head end. As for the XL, some of you may have seen a guy at the 4000 forums post that he has recovered a fully functional XL unit. I just bought this from him and its on its way to my now. So more sheer luck than anything. :bleh:
Another thing I should note is that im the kind of person who jumps on things. The moment I see someone posting something about owning a star unit im busy contacting them about a sale. Its luck, common sense, connections and money. :fear:
I hope nobody is irritated with me or anything. Just thought I picked up a slight feeling oh hostility. I always try to share my findings with the weather channel community. :hmm:

I am. :P
If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for this XL? Can you get me a STAR? (I'd pay, of course)
-
$450 with shipping for the XL
$250 with shipping for the Jr
Shipping for these things are not cheap. The XL is around 60 pounds!
Not willing to sell those and I dont know of any others for sale. Brian (cc17926) bought the broken XL off ebay for around $200 with shipping. We are going to see if we cant work something out to help get his running. Ill keep my eyes peeled for any others stars out there :P
-
Can I ask a question? Where do you guys come up with all this money to buy a piece of equipment thats basically useless? :D
-
Haha well ive had some $$ stashed away for something special. Considering chances to get some of this stuff doesn't happen everyday, its worth it IMO to go ahead and spend the money now. It may be useless but its something fun to have. Plus doesn't it rock to say i own my own Jr and XL :rofl2:
Now im planning to get a KU sat so I can play with mabey trying to get something going

Whatever floats your boat I guess. :D :P

I've always wanted to own a 4000. That's the most technically interesting STAR, in my opinion.

I agree. That's why I love it so much over all the others, I wish I had got to see it, but the XL had made it's debut at the time I discovered TWC.
-
Gah its just like Christmas morning! The XLs arrival date has been moved up to today! :thrilled:

Yes, thank you for posting. I am going up north into XL territory in February, so I will provide more videos then. :D

Chris, it's already been posted.
