Late 1980s LF song with meowing cats
« on: July 16, 2011, 10:05:55 PM »
The was a song with a sound effect of meowing cats that I remember hearing on the Local Forecast sometime around 1988 or 89. At the end the cats' meowing transitions to a howling sound.  I can best describe the song as being very progressive jazz or new age, it sounded very bizarre and distinctive. I think it was one of the shorter LF flavors. I'm sorry I can't remember any more details but I was very young then. Does anyone remember this song?

The only song I can think of with a cat-like sound is Metameme by STS9. Over than that, I have never heard of any song with meows or howling.  :dunno:

Frank Mitchell: Jetsons?
Hakeem: Yeah, you and George got the same haircut.

A bit of a long shot, but was it "Cats of Rio" by Lee Ritenour & Dave Grusin?

Glad I could help! It was in a playlist from 1988. It was used in 1989 as well, but I don't have it on the playlist for some reason. I really need to re-do those.

Yep, I remember that song.  It sounds like the cats are having a party out on the town on a Rio night

Yes they sure played some offbeat music at the end of the 80's into the early 90's, to say the least. That was one way TWC was able to distinguish itself in those early days.  I remember my dad was in the room when Cats of Rio played one time and he said  rather perplexed "Where do they get this music?

That's what I thought too when I first saw footage from 89/90! There were several songs (like "Surrender" by Harry Miller, the 4 songs by Buckwheat Zydeco, and the 2 songs by the B-52's) that, at first, I thought WTF!? But as with almost all classic WC music, it wasn't long before the music grew on me.

Yep, it was a J flavor in the summer of 1990. "Junebug" was an I flavor during the same playlist.

Now, why would they include a peculiar-sounding song like this one with cats meowing on the local forecast playlist?

TWC seemed to have a lot of peculiar music back in the day. On some playlists in the mid to late 80s, they had Eddie Murphy's Party All The Time and songs from the Eurythmics and aforementioned B-52s.
