Well folks...here it is! We've been waiting years (literally!) for it. The very first public video of the IntelliStar2. It launched today in Nashville. Videos of the 16% and 33% LDL will follow later tonight. Enjoy!

NOTE: Not original audio due to complications
Full HD 55MB

The major plus of this is the always-on radar during the Local. Great feature. The rest...I donno.
-
Will the HD STAR have traffic products in areas where it's available?
-
Sorry embedded video is now working. NOTE: Not original audio.
-
Now im siked! Thanks for posting this Tyler
-
Why was the music dubbed, and why are the old Pre-March icons there? (unless it wasn't updated).
-
Interesting!
-
Why was the music dubbed, and why are the old Pre-March icons there? (unless it wasn't updated).
The original audio was garbled. Those icons will be used for now on the IS2. There apparently isn't a suitable HD version of the others

OH MY WORD...I am SIKED! I swear I jumped up and down in my room when I saw this topic! How does the narration sound?
-
The graphics look amazing. It's nice to see a radar going on during the whole LF. That's a huge plus. With or without narration, it'll still look great.
-
I've gotta say I love these graphics. The blue section of the titlebar and the white text have a contrast ratio that I deem too low on my monitor...but that's the only request I have for it. Other than that, it's absolutely astonishing.
-
Wow, too amazing!

Like Jim Cantore. Haha we don't have a version with narration. I imagine one will pop up eventually
-
I'd Love to see how the Marine/Tides look like
-
So, is this nationwide yet?
If not, will it become nationwide sometime tomorrow for the biggest cities first? Ex: Atlanta>Los Angeles>Las Vegas>Memphis. Or will it go East to West? Ex: Atlanta>Memphis>Las Vegas>Los Angeles?

It will be in beta in 2 or 3 cities for a few months probably. After that it will be up to TWC who gets it first
-
Oh, so I won't be seeing the ISTAR 2 in Memphis for another 2-3 months...? :(
-
I am underwhelmed.
EDIT: I think I just need to see this in person. It just looks so dark - and feels more like a fan recreation that something official.
-

Trevor, be lucky your area carries TWC HD on cable. The only way to not get satellite and see TWC HD in Tampa is by way of Verizon FiOS, which is not even in all areas.
-
I am just curious..
-

Probably more than that. I would say 2-3 months before we first see it in non beta form but thats just a 100% pure guess. Probably much longer until non major metros get it.

I have to agree. I think that there could have been more work put into it. I mean, I like that it has an animated background, but I think there could be more details. Just my opinion :smoke2:

Overall I like it a lot and the ldl is stunning. I would like to hear the narrations as well. Its certainly a big step in the right direction!
-
i'm not exactly impressed. :itsok: I'd rather stick to the HD Satellite.

Okay, sorry for not answering questions sooner... I was at work. :P I'm going to answer a bunch of questions now:
1) IntelliStar 2 is currently operating live on two Comcast headends in Tennessee (one in Nashville, one in Murfeesboro). Other beta STARs will go live in Houston and Atlanta soon (time table YTBD). Note: the headends in Texas and Georgia are not all Comcast headends.
2) The IntelliStar 2 will use the previous icon set. It was designed with HD in mind, which is why it looked so crappy on the SD IntelliStar. The network will continue to use the modified icons.
3) There is narration by Jim Cantore. The audio original audio was removed by me because it was inaudible.
4) Traffic will launch on the IntelliStar 2 in some capacity, though it likely will be different from how the IntelliStar SD displays it.
5) There are no regional maps. Metro maps by default are "more regional" than metro.
6) Unlike the SD IntelliStar, the IntelliStar 2 is not able to tell whether or not there is precip in the area. The metro radar is automatically shown when the POP for the next hour is 20% or greater, or if some type of precipitation is being reported.
7) The Air Quality screen only displays when it is level 4 or 5 (orange or red). Air Quality will always show on the 30% LDL, however.
8) As of now, temperature data will only be shown on the 30% LDL. The almanac during the LF will only display moon phases and sunrise/sunset data.
9) The 16% LDL has ads, the 30% LDL does not. Ads will eventually come to the 30% LDL.
What other questions do you have? I will work on uploading LDL videos now...
-
Since you say the metro maps are more regional, will there be one IS2 for every SD STAR there is, or will a single IS2 serve an entire metro area?
-
Since you say the metro maps are more regional, will there be one IS2 for every SD STAR there is, or will a single IS2 serve an entire metro area?
That will be determined by the cable companies. But it's safe to say there will be fewer HD STARs for an area where there are several SD STARs.
-
Will the Marine/Tides segment show wave heights and such? or will it show the generic info seen on Coastal Area's SD Istars?
-
would you happen to know the font that is being used on the metro maps for the temps?

Tyler, I wonder where did you get that video from Nashville, TN? You didn't magically visit Nashville from P'burgh, did you? :P
-
This new IntelliStar does look nice from a first impression. However, it's hard for me to get excited about this debut as I don't expect to see it in person for perhaps a long time based on where I live. :(
-

Well, if you're implying that he's a genie, i'll need to rub some old lamps and see if the magical Tyler Tomasino will grant my 3 wishes :bleh:

Will it be more regional then the older sd ones?
will comcast need one at each super head (that are used for 4-5 citys) in the Chicago area? Yes the SD starts list 3-4 on the same line in the forecast.
Can this be used for Weather scan HD? Weather scan dish network?
Will there be Dish network and Directv HD star? they have SD starts?

The new STAR looks neat IMO!!! :D

To answer some questions...
1. I don't know.
2. WeatherScan HD? I don't think they will be worrying about WeatherScan for a while.
3. They already have had their HD STAR for quite some time ;) (The sat. one? Correct me if I mixed something up here)
-
I can see them doing some fine tuning on this before it's given the OK to go national. I honestly like the LDL version better. I do like the radar being visible during the entire local forecast. The purple color isn't a good background choice though for the current conditions on the top left. The maps look good but maybe they could be bigger since there's still enough space . I also don't care for the weather animations that show during the forecast portion (the road with rain falling and lightning flashes). Maybe these are some of the things that will be addressed during the beta phase.
-
I really do like the little videos durring the forecast. Better then the IntelliStar 1 in my opinion, but I wish that there would be sound effects to accompany them... like they did on the IStar 1 along time ago. I liked that much better. The background is ok... but it still needs some fine tuning to me. I also don't care for the transitioning. I did like the transitioning on the alpha. Some things that should be worked on for sure (Wow this whole post was very choppy :P )
-

Yes the idea is to have it more regional so headends don't need as many. I don't ever see a WeatherScan HD on cable. As it has been discussed many times, cable companies are short on bandwidth for the standard HD channels much less something like that.
There is already a national hd star. I doubt there will be anything different on Dish/Direct.

I can see WeatherScan HD on Directv or dish they can get by with 1 - 3 to cover all the USA.

My first impressions of this show a LOT of wasted space. TWC seems to be into that as of late. I really don't like the video for scattered showers/thunderstorms in the 48-hr forecast. I enjoy seeing the storm clouds like in the current LOT8s. I also think it needs some sort of LDL text to scroll through in that unused space between the radar and the logo. All the info that the blue LDL has would be perfect. The information flies through really fast and since 50 different things are happening at once, people may not catch the information. Time/temp next to the logo would be excellent. Also, text titles and information are the same color...the information doesn't pop out. Everything seems graphically hidden in plain sight. You have the temp on the left, detailed conditions bottom center, sky condition top center, etc. It's all over the place. I'm not a fan of the purplish background behind the temps on the left. I also really hate the hourly forecast...the orange pillars of doom are WAY too distracting. A simple blue gradient bar would do just fine.
Tyler, do you have any other videos of it in action? Various flavors, LDLs, etc?
-
that isn't all that impressive.

If not, will it become nationwide sometime tomorrow for the biggest cities first? Ex: Atlanta>Los Angeles>Las Vegas>Memphis. Or will it go East to West? Ex: Atlanta>Memphis>Las Vegas>Los Angeles?
I have my bets that Atlanta will be one of the beta test cities since The Weather Channel is headquartered here, and the area has gotten beta tests in the past.
Unfortunately, I don't have an HD TV at home to see if it does launch as a beta test here, so someone else who's in Atlanta will have to look out for it.

According to Tyler...Atlanta, Nashville, Murfeesboro, and a few other select cities are going to get the Beta IntelliSTAR 2.

From a programmer's viewpoint, I can appreciate the amount of work it likely took to do this. Looking at it that way, it is quite impressive.
From a viewer viewpoint, however, I don't like it (shocking, I know). First of all, there is too much information on the screen at one time. So I often don't know what to look at.
The screens go by way too fast. Their programmers and testers must be really fast readers!
My biggest complaint, though, is the needless "flair." When I say "flair," I mean things like the animated picture of what weather will be like in the 36 hour forecast and the glowing line that goes across the tops of the yellow bars on the hourly forecast. And then there's that REALLY bright sun that "rises" on the left in the Almanac. Wow! I half expected puppies and kittens to come out and start licking the screen. Seriously, keep it simple. Less is more.
-
I'm impressed... and frothing at the mouth for it to appear where I live!
-
Intellistar 2 HD up in my area! Doesn't look as amazing as this, but it's still a nice Intellistar!

I agree 99.99%. I like the 36 hour weather graphics. Thats what is making me (partly) excited about seeing this STAR. I do agree that there is way to much information on the screen at one time... thats something that I really don't like. I'd rather watch SD over the I2 so I can get all of the weather info for my area. The almanac animations are ok. I don't dislike them nor do I like them.
-
I know it isn't knocking on my door for a while...heck, TWC HD isn't even here yet (and Cox is preparing another wave of HD channel additions - no deal to get it yet?).

Bright house Tampa probably has the lowest amount of HD channels possible because they have yet to announce a digital transition and more uses its bandwidth on road runner service (they were formerly a TW headend but kept the branding) and they now have a thing RR Lightning for speeds up to 40mb/s so be lucky if you get it before Tampa can get it :P
However TWC HD is available on FiOS here and Knology cable of Pinellas County

Probably. Right now is being tested to show the lf, and when it is stable they will probably activate the narrations.
Edit: typo

There was a problem with the local vocal, so it was temporarily disabled. Should return some time next week.

Will the 30% or the 16% LDL be used on the IS2? Or will there be no LDL at all? :dunno:
Also, on this video there is an "hour-by-hour" forecast but on another there is a "day planner." Are both being used?

Jim's Narration debut!
IntelliStar 2 Beta *Severe Storm Warning* with Narrations (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oV1PSQHyn9A#ws)
I already miss Allen Jackson! ;p
-
Hmm, I'm missing Allen Jackson. Jim is speaking a little too fast and is "choppy." Interesting how the radar is no longer narrated. Maybe this is a bug or something.
Also, the Local Forecast screen no longer has text. Can someone please confirm this? Is this a new permanent change?
-
Could the choppiness of the Vocal Local be caused from the beta version? :hmm: Just wondering.
-
Why does Jim sound so awkward? His voice is so deep too like he's a robot or depressed or something.
-
Why does Jim sound so awkward? His voice is so deep too like he's a robot or depressed or something.
Yeah, that's kind of what I was trying to say when I said "choppy." There is one point where his voice sounds almost like it is automated or something. Maybe, as TWCDude said, it has something to do with the beta.
-
remember when the istar had minor narration in 04 with allen? thats what jim sounds like now in the beta.

Allen's voice did sound more deeper and robotic when the IS debuted than it does now.

Jim's Narration debut!
IntelliStar 2 Beta *Severe Storm Warning* with Narrations (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oV1PSQHyn9A#ws)
A bit better than Allen Jackson since I can hear the music during narration perfectly.

Well you do have to realize he was reading a whole bunch of phrases and going down a list. If he happened to start changing the tone slightly by accident it was more noticeable when the parts were pieced together.
Also, the Local Forecast screen no longer has text. Can someone please confirm this? Is this a new permanent change?
While I can not confirm I assume if the forecast can be properly narrated then it is not shown, if there is an error or it can't the text will show.
-
The thing about the no text local forecast pages is TWC wants the IS2 to attract the Cable Companies by showing the weather graphics off.
there will most likely be 2 different schemes the IS2 will use
1. The Text based Local Forecast we see now on the Domestic IS1
2. The Graphics based Local Forecast that is currently in the BETA mode.
-
Speaking of the Intellistar2, the Alpha STAR in NYC is still alive and kicking well. Here are some clips I took last week with the star. I don't think this STAR will stick out much for long though, they'll probably upgrade to the IS2 in a few months if they continue HD STAR testing.

IntelliStar 2 Beta, 8/26 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfuYE6ddvfc#)
Seems the Local Forecast Portion seen previously is back?
or it might depend on the Flavor (08/38,28/58) etc.
-
Thanks for providing another video! :) It's always nice to get updated ones of the beta, even if nothing has changed much.
Three things:
1) Does the showing of the Day Planner and Hourly Forecast depend on the flavor?
2) I guess the text on the forecast might depend on the flavor as well.
3) The radar isn't narrated. I wonder if this is a bug or supposed to be this way.
Maybe Tyler or someone else can confirm these things?
-
I wonder why the icons on there haven't been updated. They probably will right before it debuts for everywhere.
-
I wonder why the icons on there haven't been updated. They probably will right before it debuts for everywhere.
According to Tyler, the icons won't be updated. He says that the current icon set on the IS2 (known as the 2006 - March 2010 set) was designed "with HD in mind." Therefore, TWC will likely have two icon sets. Silly, I know, but I have to say that I like the 2006 - March 2010 set better.
-
I wonder why the icons on there haven't been updated. They probably will right before it debuts for everywhere.
According to one of Tyler's Posts the Realistic Icons set is just for the IS2 which means that they won't be updated to the current set.

I do have a tuner, but I didn't bring it with me. And whenever I try to record something in HD, it turns black and white for some reason.

As for the questions... yes as previously mentioned this set of icons is the set that's going to be used on the IntelliStar 2. And the flavors do depend on if what version of the hourly and text forecasts are shown. The idea was to have a bigger variety of products.
-
Forgot to check to see if the HD star was live at my dad's house. I'll check this weekend.

Thank you for answering these questions, Tyler! :)
And thank you very much for posting a video of the IS 2 in your city, Christina! :thrilled: It's definetely nice to see a video of it in action in another part of the country.
-
No problem! I'll be in Lafayette for a few more days, and I think my grandparents' DVD player is a recorder too, so I might be able to get a clip in better quality. I plan on uploading another clip with the marine forecast up also. I'm surprised that the HD STAR wound up in the middle of Louisiana so early. I really wasn't expecting that at all, so that sure was an awesome surprise to see.
-
Are there any new changes? It's been a couple months. I was hoping things have gotten smoother and new features have been added. :D
-

I don't think so. I don't have the IS2, so I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing that if any changes had been made we'd know about them. ;)
Christina, did you happen to ever catch the Marine forecast? If not, that's OK but I know a lot of us are eager to see it. :)
-
From a comment I read on Facebook a few days ago, there's roughly about 100 IS2's operating.

In addition to the videos I posted on this thread (https://twctodayforums.com/forums/intellistar-2-discussion/intellistar-2-beta-launch/175/), here are some more videos for your viewing pleasure direct from Grand Forks, ND! (Check out the alert crawl!)

Could you upload the Big LDL on the 8's during storm stories between 5-7pm? that's one video i would love to see!

Why does Jim put so much emphasis on "at 5 to 10 miles per hour"? He makes it sound like it's shocking or something...

I've always been wondering about that.
-
Why does Jim put so much emphasis on "at 5 to 10 miles per hour"? He makes it sound like it's shocking or something...
If you had to make the almost endless amounts of short weather recordings needed to encompass all possible local forecast readings, it would be impossible to speak each one with the same delivery style. The IS simply takes all of Jim's recording cuts and pieces them together for an appropriate narration. That's why all narrations can seem choppy and have varying tones and emphasis along the way.
-
Great videos, Mark! However, I notice a BIG problem: the warning crawl is covering up some of the information on the LDL.

Great videos, Mark! However, I notice a BIG problem: the warning crawl is covering up some of the information on the LDL.
It's that way with the large LDL on the SD feed, too.
Comparing the HD and SD warning crawls, I think the HD is far less intrusive. As for "BIG problem," I think it qualifies as a minor inconvenience, not as a "BIG problem." Do you expect them to invest the time, effort, and money to completely reformat the LDL for a warning crawl which appears a small fraction of the total amount of time the LDL is shown?

I guess your right; it's not a big problem. I just don't see why TWC wouldn't think to create the LDL and warning crawl in such a way that this would not happen. Although it's a minor inconvenience, this still could have been prevented from happening. ;)

Here's another video for all of you! Notice the glitch in the middle with the national forecast showing through. I have a second version of this forecast, just not uploaded yet (the other version shows the 48hr forecast as a graphical representation versus text). Enjoy!

Climate data? Did they just add that screen? I haven't seen that in other videos. Would be nice to have a temperature one too.

The Climate Data screen hasn't been back on that I've seen since the first couple times the IS2 ran.

Would be nice if they alternated between that and the moons almanac, as well as having temperature-based climatic data.

Here's some new video featuring the alert in the LDL (this is the first I have noticed this).

It would be, especially considering the sunrise/sunset and moon data are in the LDL. I'd like to see more during the LOT8's that isn't scrolling at the bottom all day.

It appears that Hutchinson, KS has recieved the IS2. I don't know the cable provider, but I assume it's either Comcast, Midcontinent, or Cox.

I used to live in Hutchinson, KS. Good to see they got the new HD local.

It's Cox Kansas. Most, if not all, Cox KS locations have the IS2.

You might be correct on that  I knew someone from the Wichita area that had their Weatherscan unit on the same channel the Topeka one is and it was added around the same time yours was
-
Cox Kansas is all the same except local channels. If Topeka gets a channel, Wichita and the rest of KS get it. Our channel lineup is 99% the same as all of Cox KS. Just like TWC is channel 2 on all of Cox for Kansas, channel 2002 is TWC HD.

Quality is obviously very bad since I shot it with my iPhone, sorry about that, but here's the IS2 with the new ad crawl.IMG_1343.MOV (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0hd2uYl4Z4#ws)

Interesting, but I'd rather see a current conditions LDL down there. :)

I'd still like to see an LDL on the local forecast, though the upper-left corner does that already. Still... it seems like an awful lot of wasted space.
-

Seems fair to me. You are watching a local forecast which already has the current conditions. The cable companies need some incentive to get the IS2 hardware and this certainly helps
-

You're right...it's almost like the IS2 was made for an LDL with all that blank space at the bottom, but maybe not. I guess "LDA" is the new thing now.
-
The LDA is where it's at.. I've noticed several stations putting data on the sides of the screen rather than the bottom lately.
-
An LDL would help with the waste of space, but it'll be even more info thrown at you. Think about it, you already have the actual LF and the sidebar/LDA. Some of the info that could be in the LDL is already in the sidebar, so it would be redundant.
-
I can see both sides of the argument here but the truth is that the majority of current information is shown within the first 15 seconds of the LOT8s...then hidden away until it comes around on the LDL. I would prefer seeing rotating text at the bottom (in the wasted space between the radar and the TWC logo) with all of the data shown on the old blue LDL. Wind direction speed/gusts, pressure, dew point, humidity, cloud ceiling, etc. since the current/forecast temps are shown in the LDL. It doesn't have to be fancy, just text rotating much like the old 4000 or something.
