Title: General IS2 Discussion
Post by: KevOwensby on May 27, 2012, 08:21:42 AM
Pretty sure we're past the beta phase, so starting a general IS2 thread.

Is anyone else only getting the national LDL since they switched it to red and started showing the Beryl bug?

Yes!

I thought it was because the IS2 was running the tropical storm warning and hurricane local statements non-stop (which the IS isn't).  I'm glad to know that it's a nationwide problem.

Actually, I was worried that the IS2 was having glitches again, especially since it took a month (!) to get it working.

I thought it was on ours, too. Then we got a Special Weather Statement yesterday for heat and realized it must just not be activating. We're getting our LOT8's (or whatever it's on at this point.) Just thought I'd ask if anybody else was having the same issue. Not going to rant... but I would think this would be the time that they'd want to have the local LDL on the most, since most of the actual coverage is concentrated on a certain few areas.

With the shorter LF's, I don't seem to be getting my Marine Forecast or Almanac anymore. Anyone else notice this? The graphics were so good on the IS2, and I'll be sad if I can't see them anymore.

Same here, but we never had a marine forecast here since I had the Farmingdale IS2. I don't know why they didn't have it on the Islip IS2.

I talked with The Weather Channel and i was told they finished recommendations for the number of units for the New England Area and they will have to turn in those changes to comcast and the estimation is around 1 month for Comcast to order then be shipped the IS2.

He's has a job as an actual employee of TWC, and he comes on when he gets a chance. He'll be on sometime or another. If not, shoot an email to someone at TWC, they'll forward you to the right department.

well my areas IS2 was restored. It seems that they know about the problem that is plaguing the IS2s it seems to be a video board issue and they are working on it according to someone who got back to me via email from the weather channel.

This is kinda off-topic, but don't you hate it when greedy companies like Comcast lie to you? For example, when I cancelled my services with them last month, they were gonna mail me a $88 refund but they never did! Those lying greedy bastards...  :hammer:

I don't know if the IS2 itself shows up in this video because I haven't watched the whole video.

Update From Xfinity

Quote
I can tell you that it’s not going to happen “anytime soon,” but it’s something that we’ll consider for our next round of HD additions.  Sorry there isn’t any more specific information available.  Rest assured that your feedback has been passed along to our programming team.

So basically i will hopefully get a new update in September on the IS2 status.

As of yesterday evening, my local headend (Charter) started to display their ads over the HD TWC feed at :17/:47 of each hour (they didn't used to before.) They are the same ads that get displayed on the SD TWC feed simultaneously as on the HD one. I'm still seeing the HD SLF and LDL as of this morning, but I'm certain that maybe, just maybe, Charter might be getting the IS2 unit for Astoria real soon  My fingers are crossed.

The satellite on the regional Satellite/Radar view on the IS2 is not updating. It doesn't move, or match up to the precip, and I'm pretty sure it is the same as it was on Sunday afternoon. Anyone else noticing this, or is it just me?

EDIT: It just started updating again.
EDIT 2: Well, this explains it...
"At 22Z yesterday GOES-13 (GOES-East) had an anomaly. In English, it means that it has stopped working. This is the satellite that covers the central and eastern U.S., as well as the Atlantic Ocean. Investigators have no clue why it happened, and no clue what is up with the satellite now. We'll update you on the situation as more information is received. That said, GOES-15 (GOES-West) hemispheric images are being produced, so now some central and eastern U.S. images have been restored, but looking from a rather oblique angle from the Pacific Ocean."

Please keep in mind, if you don't already know, that GOES-13 satellite imagery that takes various types of satellite imagery is experiencing an outage right now. This is most likely the reason why your satellite and on the majority of all ISs and IS2s are not updating. TWC can fix this by taking imagery from GOES-15, though the quality might not be as good.

Update on GOES-13:

Quote
THE NESDIS SOCC...SATELLITE OPERATIONS CONTROL CENTER...HAS
ADVISED THAT DUE TO UNKNOWN PROBLEMS WITH THE GOES-13 SOUNDER
INSTRUMENT, THEY ARE PUTTING BOTH IT AND THE IMAGER INTO STANDBY
MODE TO PROTECT THEM FROM FURTHER DAMAGE.
GOES-15...GOES-WEST...WILL BE PUT INTO FULL DISK MODE. THEY ARE
STILL TROUBLESHOOTING THE PROBLEMS WITH GOES-13...AT THIS TIME
THERE IS NO ETA FOR RETURN TO SERVICE.

The major downside to this, especially for us tropical enthusiasts, is that there is now zero satellite imagery for the Atlantic ocean.

Welcome back to 1960. Well, not really...but it's a setback. :P

From what I heard, they are already implementing backup satellites. Two good GOES satellites that can give you good coverage of the CON US and the North Atlantic right now are GOES-12 and GOES-14.

It's unfortunate to think there will probably be a few rarely seen or never seen again forecast products since the LFs have been gutted.

I'm more interested in what kind of cities they would use differently on the LDL from the LDL used on the IS, I remember how on the first week the blue LDL debuted, they used odd and random locations like Piedmont Park for example.

Doubt it. My uncle had Fios for a while (and was looking forward to the IS2 himself). Went back to Cablevision in a heartbeat. I assume you live in New York City..why don't you switch to Cablevision instead if you want to see the IS2? Cable and internet (optimum online) together is actually cheaper than Fios.

In a restaurant on the OU campus today, I saw an IS2 for Oklahoma City.  I am assuming this is probably through COX.  (Strangely enough, COX customers in Norman, or on the OU campus at least, do not get a forecast for Norman.  Instead, it's Oklahoma City.)

That seems strange.  Isn't Norman where the NWS office is?  Now, I know TWC isn't the NWS, but you would think the forecast Norman sees would be for Norman, the city where the office is.

It has nothing to do with where the SPC (not NWS) office is, but rather how the headend just allocates its service area.

Andy, it could very well be possible that the Cox headend around there once had a specific IS for Norman but just had a consolidation some time ago, but that'd be my guess.

Also, Norman is about as far away from OKC (possibly closer) as my hometown is to Tampa, yet we're served by the Tampa STAR.

While the location of the cable headend matters in this situation, you may not realize that Norman (KOUN) is just an AWOS.  You see it reporting every 20 minutes, but AWOS stations provide data that can be suspect.  However, Oklahoma City (KOKC) has an ASOS, which gives a standard report every hour and is far more superior to an AWOS.  By rule, only ASOS stations can be used for climate, and TWC usually defers to an ASOS for the LF when there is a choice between both types of stations nearby because of this discrepancy.

Right, but HiRAD is what matters in this, not the factor of an AWOS or ASOS station. Sure HiRAD gets its data derived from nearby weather stations (ASOS and or AWOS) but it has algorithms to detect faulty current conditions and pulls in from other areas and estimates to fix those faults.

There's no sign of the IS2 here.  I doubt Blacksburg will get one for another year or two given the small market and how slowly Xfinity (Comcast) is trickling out these updates.

Same here for Astoria. All if not most of the other Charter headends across Washington and Oregon (Medford, Wenatchee, etc.) have IS2 units but for some reason not yet the Charter headend in Astoria  :(  Click! Network up in Tacoma has an IS2 at their headend as well according to SiliconDust.

I guess someday it will bleed it's way down here. It's not like it's been out nearly 4 years or anything.

At this point it doesn't really matter, the version, graphically I wanted to see in person is long gone and even if it wasn't it would be butchered because it would only play the same preselected tired out forecast products like the IS does.

On the upside, having a LF in HD regardless of what it looks like would be fine with me. I'm really sick and tired of seeing the national feed on the HD channel especially since I rather watch most channels (including TWC) in HD.

Two things. 1. When did the IS2 get traffic? And 2. When did my town get big enough for a traffic report?

Edit: It took me a while to finally get the pictures attached. Every time I posted from my phone, the pictures would be flipped upside down. Only way to fix it was to flip the picture upside down and then re-flip it to the correct orientation in the Photos app.

There is still a bug in the local forecast, at least in the Dayton, OH area.
At the end of the local forecast (upper right portion of the screen), there is a "TONIGHT" and "TOMORROW" forecast.

The "TOMORROW" is supposed to be using the daytime icons, but the nighttime icons are showing up there.  It happens frequently, too.

Here's a video clip of the IntelliStar2 that serves Atlanta, GA. There's a minor narration issues, Jim Cantore doesn't narrate everything for "Tonight" on the text local forecast.

My guess is that we got the IntelliStar2 between Sunday night and Today because I know we still had the HD National Forecast up until this weekend. This morning is the first time I've looked at the HD feed of The Weather Channel since this weekend. Had I not of turned on there today, who knows how long it would have been before I found out we had it. (NOTE: Video may be still processing.)

Atlanta, GA IntelliStar2 - October 30, 2014 11:08a (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJuMOn3bqK0#ws)

EDIT: I noticed there's been no Local on the 8s intro, is it like that for all IS2s or is that some type of error? :dunno:

I have a question for those of you who have the IS2. Looking at the video I posted above, isn't the IS2 cuing in too early and cuing out too late? Just curious if the timing is normal or not.

Here's another error I noticed this evening when I came back home...

Title: Re: General IS2 Discussion

Yeah, the timing is way off. As you said it skipped the intro. It also skipped the greeting screen at the beginning, and the hashtag screen at the end. All the graphics should slide out at the same time at the end of the forecast (except the background), but the 7-day box lingered, so it probably ran out of time for the hashtag screen.

Yeah I thought so. I guess they're still working out all the kinks since it's a newly installed unit. With the narration issue (as it was in the video I posted) It's an off/on thing. Sometimes Jim Cantore's narration cuts off on the second screen of the text forecast and other times it plays on all three screens with no problems.

As a side note about Jim Cantore, although I've heard Jim Cantore's voice narrating numerous times in IS2 video clips, now that I actually get to hear him right from my own HDTV it's kinda weird. He reads everything so calm, cool, and laid back like it's nothing quite the contrast to the Allan Jackson narrations which to me sound more blunt, straightforward and tends to emphasize on certain phrases that are read.
Title: Re: General IS2 Discussion
Post by: toxictwister00 on November 01, 2014, 09:20:03 PM
I would say 100% of the issues have been fixed, but now there's a new problem. The text on the right side of the text forecast is missing for Tomorrow and Tomorrow Night, but the weather icon and forecasted temperature is present on the left. Because of the missing text, those portions of the forecast is narration-less. Hey, at least the text "Tomorrow Night" has been correctly condensed so there's that. :P

Local on the 8s Intro and Welcome Screen is present (which resolved the cuing too early error)

The Space for icons used for holidays/events is present. In this case it's a clock icon for Daylight Savings Time. Yesterday for Halloween, the pumpkin icon was missing.

"For more information, stay on TWC" is present (which resolved the cuing too late error)

Considering it took over 4 years for us to get the IS2, I mean even Marietta, which is about an hour away from Atlanta got the IS2 3 years ago. I think Marietta is served by Charter (not Comcast like ATL) Since there are cities/states not far from you that have it and are served by Charter Cable, I think it's possible you'll get the IS2 within the next year. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

I thought I was the only one with the textless 36-hour forecasts.  I first noticed it Friday evening after having only the national feed Friday morning.  It continues today.

Mine came back 11am Sunday morning after being out all Friday night and Sat.

Mine became error-free since yesterday. No problems this morning either.

Is this a new product on the sidebar? I haven't seen it before.

I had that on my IS2. Seems like a new addition.

I see a new radar perspective, but nothing much else.

It is still WAY too dumbed down from the versions of yore.

I briefly saw an IntelliSTAR 2 on TV earlier today in Longview, WA while waiting inside a local Jiffy Lube to get my vehicle's oil changed. I didn't see an actual LF though, just the LDL during 'Weather Center Live'. Like many other Xfinity headends, this was a letterboxed Weather Channel HD feed simulcast on SD channel 47.

Has anyone ever heard this Current Conditions Narration? It's different from the normal "Currently In Our Area".

Interesting, I don't think I've ever heard that narration by Jim Cantore before, but I know Alan Jackson had one like that.  Always makes me curious how it's decided when the narration changes, like why is it sometimes "Currently in our area..." and sometimes "Currently, the temperature is...under..."

But I wonder why the sky conditions weren't narrated on the above clip?

Ever since the WATT update in 2013, the IS2HD has never had a narration for Windy Conditions for some odd reason. Usually when Windy Conditions were reported on the LF, the IS2 would not play a narration or read the temp. The same cannot be said for the Cloudy/Windy Condtions, as there is a narration for that. Maybe during one of the minor updates TWC added this narration, but not a narration for Windy Conditions. It's very odd.

Our Intellistar 2 on Time Warner in NW Ohio recently got the main city changed to Defiance from Findlay, plus the same cities on the LDL as the Intellistar + 2 cities only the IS2 has.. The IS is not simulcast for now.
