LOCATED WELL SOUTHEAST OF THE CANADIAN MARITIMES HAS ACQUIRED
TROPICAL CHARACTERISTICS.

AT 500 PM EDT...2100 UTC...THE CENTER OF TROPICAL STORM CHRIS WAS
LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 39.3 NORTH...LONGITUDE 57.7 WEST. CHRIS IS
MOVING TOWARD THE EAST NEAR 8 MPH...13 KM/H.  AN EASTWARD MOTION
WITH AN INCREASE IN FORWARD SPEED IS FORECAST DURING THE NEXT 24
HOURS.  A TURN TOWARD THE NORTHEAST...THEN NORTH IS EXPECTED
WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND THURSDAY.

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 45 MPH...75 KM/H...WITH HIGHER
GUSTS.  LITTLE CHANGE IN STRENGTH IS EXPECTED DURING THE NEXT 48

I'm really surprised this system was named.  Chris will turn extratropical in a couple days as it drifts toward cooler waters and eventually gets absorbed into a larger North Atlantic low, so there's zero threat to the United States from this storm.

I'm not surprised it got named, I'm surprised it got named so quickly though. There was barely anything there to be named when I saw it earlier.

It's really shallow according to NHC, so only the lower layer of it shows tropical characteristics.  I was surprised the system was named due to the surrounding environment and the cyclone's structure.

One last note, I'm getting really tired of the politics that get brought in here.  I did not indicate at all in my first post that Chris was a wasted name, but I had to delete a post as someone tried to provoke me.  I'm going to delete any posts from now on that hint at starting a debate in here.

Chris has been given Hurricane status - first hurricane of the year. Still no threat to land and is expected to be extratropical by the end of tomorrow.

Well, Chris as a 75-mph hurricane was quite short-lived.  It's already been downgraded back to a 70 mph tropical storm as of the 5 PM EDT advisory, and it should continue to gradually weaken before undergoing extratropical transition.  I'm really stunned that this storm even made it to hurricane status.

Update as of the 11 AM EDT advisory:  Chris is no longer tropical, so all NHC advisories have been discontinued.
