As we enter into the final days of summer, its becoming time to look ahead to cooler temperatures and even (yikes!) snow. So how does everyone think this winter will unfold? Will it be cold or mild? Will there be snow, or none?
My thoughts for winter in my area are as follows. Judging by how summer was a bit on the cool side (I don't think the temp ever climbed above 95), I think we're going to have a cool and snowy winter. We're already expecting to see temps perhaps in the 40's tonight, and we're still in September!
-
I think Winter Conditions will happen in the winter, in some place other than Phoenix.

Yeah, you usually don't get wintry conditions there. :P
-
I think it'll snow in January 13th.
-
Doesnm't anyone have any actual thoughts? Or do you all think this is some kind of friggin' joke? :furious:
-
My predictions seems to a be a record cold winter with temps ranging between 11-34 degrees here in the New England area and at least 2 blizzard 1.happening Christmas eve 2. happening Valentines Day 2009 plus 3.a minor snow event in March
-
IMO I think this will be one of the coldest and snowest winters the East Coast has seen in years. I been going to the Farmer's Almanac looking at their 2 month long range forecasts (which is updated every month) since Spring and they have been pretty accurate with weather events on certain dates, they also released their Winter Outlook there's a link if anyone is interested.

The last time when we got a snowstorm was back in Feburary 2007. I think it only reached up to 8 degrees. For this winter, I don't think were going to get that much snow. I even think we could get some storms and maybe even tornadoes. Its only been 9 months since the rare Janurary tornado outbreak in the Midwest.
-
I think it'll be a pretty bad winter. As Gary had mentioned earlier in the thread, it's already chilly in many places. Although I don't know how accurate the farmers almanac is, as I really don't pay much attention to them, but the are calling for a "Wild, Snowy, Cold winter" (give or take a couple words) for the midwest.
I actually don't mind winter, as long as I can handle driving in it. Last winter was one of the snowiest winters I had seen in a few years, actually, one of the wildest.
We'll just have to see what happens, but I think it'll be a good winter (or bad..depending on your point-of-view :D)
-
I have been having these strange snow dreams since around this time last year about a blizzard slamming the East Coast, one of the dreams it was a Snow Hurricane. I assumed it meant last year would be really cold and snowy, but maybe they're a sign of what's to come this winter.
-
Well, for the first time this year snow was mentioned in our forecast. The higher elevations in the western part of the state are expecting a few flurries (lake effect in nature) after this cold front moves through today. Seems awful early to be talking about snow! :faint:
-
I think it'll snow in January 13th.
How coincidental! That is my birthday!
I predict no snow to fall in my area and for the lows to be around freezing for several days in the winter. I also predict for TWC to roll out new Winter Weather Authority/Alert/Whatever graphics in case if there is some major event.

This is what one of the mets at Accuweather is saying......

If this comes true the NE is gonna have one heck of a snowy winter this time around.

Henry's been wrong,we'll just wait and see!

I didn't say he would be right, you have to take it with a grain of salt.

I agree. Like I said, wait and see.

Exactly!

Then everyone will know what will happen!

My area has not had a real snow for over 5 years! Conditions have to be just right for it. I think we will see a harsher winter than normal. I hope that means a lot of snow for my area
-
Yeah, I want more snow! The last blizzard we had was probably 2003. We got a good amount of snow in February 2006, but NYC took the brunt of that storm.
-
It did snow a few days last year but it was too warm to stick. I remember that 03 snow. It was the day after Christmas. We almost had a white christmas... almost :P
-
I was referring to the one in February 2003, not Christmas. I don't recall having snow Christmas time here in Philly that year.
The first half of the 2003/2004 winter season was relatively warm, having temperatures in the 60's for much of November when we typically see upper 40's/low 50's. Even in December, we had a few days where we hit the upper 50's.

 Hmm I wonder if that was a local storm. Ill have to look it up

The last time we had a major snowstorm in my neck of the woods was 6 years ago right after New Years, we picked up 6 inches and there was still snow in my backyard 2 weeks later! it was cold winter that year. We haven't had an icestorm in 3 years it was sleeting when I left school that Friday, we got close to 2 inches of ice that storm the worst so far this century.

Wow! Last ice storm we had was nearly 11-12 years ago
-
We had an ice storm in March 2007 where two or three inches fell. It was really hard to shovel.
-
We usually get them every other winter. I don't want another one like the last one I almost busted by butt 10 times trying to come from the gas station with my mom. Somebody had to help us back up to our front porch because we were sliding so much on the ice.
-
We got snow in our area on Christmas 2004. We barley get snow here.
-
We never get snow. We are lucky if we even get rain outside of monsoon season.

Christmas started off on a bad note that year, because my grandma's house is over 80 years old, we still had a fusebox at the time and I just got a new computer and I got to use it Christmas Eve as an early present. 30 minutes later the power blew out. We had to go out to several stores that mangaged to stay open and find new fuses. When we came home Snow advisories were issued for Macon,Ga and south into Northern Florida! :o everything stayed south of us it was just COLD and dry. :(

This is the OFFICIAL Accuweather Winter Forecast
http://www.accuweather.com/news-weather-features.asp?
^Overall I do agree with most of this.
-
If the long range prediction holds true winter 2008/2009 could be very interesting on the east coast if this recent pattern of coastal storm development continues.
-
December looks to be a lion coldwise and considering how the pattern has been since Mid October I don't think what Henry says in video blog is that far fetched.Being a snowlover I'm happy about what could be coming soon.

Seriously here in South GA it has gotten cold a little early we've already been below freezing more than once and it came kinda early this season. I think we are going to have record cold this winter season even here in the south.

Here's what the NWS Office in Atlanta,Ga had to say about North Georgia in their forecast discussion..... :thrilled:
.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
THE GFS LONG RANGE SOLUTION CONTINUES TO BE MORE AMBITIOUS THAN
THE OTHER MODELS...BUT IT HAS BECOME MORE REALISTIC COMPARED TO
THE TWO EARLIER RUNS. THE MAIN CONCERN IS HOW DEEP WILL THE UPPER
LEVEL TROUGH BECOME AS IT MOVES INTO THE SOUTHEAST U.S. SUNDAY AND
THROUGH THE REGION BY TUESDAY. THIS WILL DETERMINE HOW DEEP THE
SURFACE LOW GETS AS IT DEVELOPS IN THE GULF AND MOVES NORTHEAST
ALONG THE ATLANTIC COAST EARLY NEXT WEEK. ONCE AGAIN SINCE ALL
LONG RANGE MODELS POINT TO MEASURABLE RAIN...HAVE CHOSEN TO GO
WITH THE HIGHER MEX MOS GUIDANCE POPS AND TEMPS.
PLENTY OF COLD AIR EXPECTED TO PLUNGE INTO GA WITH THE APPROACHING
TROUGH AXIS. THIS COMBINED WITH AMPLE WRAPAROUND MOISTURE FROM THE
STORM SYSTEM ALONG THE MIDDLE ATLANTIC COAST WILL CREATE THE
POTENTIAL FOR FROZEN PRECIPITATION OVER NORTH GA LATE SUNDAY NIGHT
THROUGH EARLY TUESDAY MORNING. MOST LIKELY WILL SEE A RAIN OR SNOW
MIX NORTH OF INTERSTATE 85 WITH ALL SNOW AT HIGHER ELEVATIONS OF
THE NORTH CENTRAL AND NORTHEAST GA MOUNTAINS. TOO EARLY TO TELL ON
SNOW AMOUNTS...BUT AN INCH OR TWO CAN BE REASONABLY EXPECTED IN THE
HIGHER ELEVATIONS.
THE REMAINDER OF TUESDAY WILL BE A TRANSITIONAL DAY AS A DRIER
AIRMASS MOVES INTO THE STATE WITH BUILDING HIGH PRESSURE. EXPECT
RAPID WARMING ON WEDNESDAY AS THE HIGH DRIFTS INTO FL WITH A LOW
LEVEL SOUTHWEST FLOW PREVAILING.
Something to watch indeed....
