Title: Major East Coast Storm?
Post by: lfmusiclover on February 28, 2009, 11:29:41 PM
Sooo...as alot of us probably know, it looks like a major winter storm could be shaping up for tomorrow and Monday. Currently it looks as though some areas could see as much as a foot or more of snow, including some of the major cities. At this point the further east you go, the more snow is expected, with the most expected generally east of the I-95 corridor. But the path of the storm is still uncertain, and if it tracks closer to the shore those heavier amounts will shift further west, resulting in as much as a foot+ of snow across a good chunk of the eastern seaboard.

This could definitely be the biggest storm many of us have seen this winter. It looks like winter is going to try and go out with a bang.

This is going to be interesting indeed...my local NBC station reported a possible foot of snow possible by Monday.

The track of the upper-level low and the associated surface low will determine everything for this East Coast storm.  Winter storm watches are already in effect in a line from northern Georgia to southern Maine.  The critical time for this storm will be Sunday night as that's when the best chance for snow exists according to the latest computer models, so stay tuned for updates as March wants to enter in like a lion!

NAM and GFS are painting a nice picture. The 00nz runs shows much more snow for my area than earlier. TWC predictions earlier seems ridiculous but now seem to fit in just nice.

The latest models also indicate it will strengthen and stay closer to the coast meaning more snow  :worship:

If that's the case then I think those snowfall estimates are very low.

I doubt we're gonna get anything here. Probably nothing more than a dusting.

Indeed. Here is GFSs latest run

It looks like we should focus along I-95 between Washington, DC and Boston, MA based on these model runs.  I can definitely see 6-12" of snow in this corridor, which easily warrants the issuance of winter storm watches.  If there's more moisture available as the storm spins up, then 12"+ is possible in isolated areas.  It's definitely going to be a mess on Monday morning.

Through the day the models have shifted a little east and there also seems to be the threat of dry air entering into the Richmond, VA area but from all accounts it looks that they will get a decent amount before that happens.

According to that model most of the big cities are looking at at least 8-10 inches.

Winter Storm Watches have already been issued here in MD and will go into effect tomorrow afternoon. Tough by then I expect warnings, not watches.

Local meteorologist and the NWS are staying stingy on predictions after the many false alarms this year in my area.

January we had Winter Storm warnings that closed every area school and we got nothing. Not even a flurry. Winter weather advisory was posted another time with nothing.

As of the latest run EURO is cutting out some of the dry air coming in from the west.

GFS has been fairly good at predicting storms and it has had the least changes these past few days. I would take any model with a grain of salt but all the models seem to be lining up recently

TWC is forecasting that much here for me in Atlanta, but if were caught under one of those very heavy snow bands, we'll get more than that most likely, I hate the NWS here they are very scary on perdicting any kind of snow, if we get that kind of snow they will have no choice but to upgarde us to a Winter Storm Warning because a Winter Weather Advisory would be too weak to alert to those kinds of accumulations. Also have you guys heard about the 3 inch snow bands that whipped through Memphis? They picked up that much in just 45 minutes! Talk about intense! :thrilled:

It's 44° and steadily falling with light rain, I'm a little worried about ice on the roads from this as it falls to and/or below freezing today. There's 3 things that caught my eye from TWC's forecast because they are a big change since 6 hours ago.

Rain early with snow by afternoon. Thunder possible. Morning high of 43F with temps falling to near freezing. Winds NNW at 15 to 25 mph. 3 to 5 inches of snow expected.

We're expected to have 5-8 inches tonight, and another 1-3 tomorrow. Gusty winds too, which are perfect ingredients for a blizzard. Been waiting for this to happen since 2003!

Would anyone be interested in IntelliStar clips during this event?

LOL, I know how you feel Jesse. Although, in this particular case, I don;t mind the snow. We haven't seen much snow this year, so my tolerance hasn't been spent yet!  :D

Sounds good Mike! I'm thinking of posting some 4000 emulator clips during the event.

Kim said Philadelphia 6-8 in, New York 8-10 in. And CBS3 says the more east, the more snow so I'm guessing the shore will get the most.

When it comes to big storms, I have trouble putting much faith in TWC's forecast. They've been notorious for blowing forecast big time. I'll wait and see what the local weather people say this evening.  :D

Winter storm warning for 1-3 inches?! They should of issued an advisory for that, but not a warning.

I'm right on the extreme western edge of the Warning. If you go further east into the county, the snow totals pick up to 4-8 inches.

Well, it looks like we don't have to worry about if there's enough moisture for this storm based on the radar images over the past few hours.  It's all a matter of whether there will be enough cold air to force the precipitation to stay all snow for the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast to support the winter storm warnings in effect.  I can tell that we're in for a really long night just by all the excitement on this forum today.

Oh yeah, its definitely gonna be a long night. We really haven't had a chance to get into winter storm mode yet this year!  :D

TWC's currently forecasting 6-12" for my area.

I see that the precipitation falling from VA to NJ is already snow, which eliminates the last issue that could have made this storm a bust.  The 18Z model runs are now confirming that a good band of snow is going to set up along I-95 tonight, and southern New England is now looking at the potential for a foot of snow.  We finally have a real winter storm for this season!

So, it's like, gee, the radar says there's moderate precipitation falling, but I look out the window, and there's nothing falling. <_<

It's still way too dry for anything to fall. The temperature is 37°F, but the dewpoint is 18°F.

Wind gust 49mph at my house up to 60 at other close stations. Coastal flooding that is covering the lower decks of our pier and the waves are hammering them so hard the planks are prying up.  Already had a brief power outage. Big branches coming down too.

This is just an estimate, but as of 8:30 this morning, I'd say we have about 3 or 4 inches of snow on the ground, and it's still falling. The snow is apparently very dry and fluffy, causing it to blow around a lot, making driving pretty bad.

There's a band of snow in Albany now.  The snow is so light and powdery that it's trying to fly sideways when the wind gusts over 20 mph.  I don't expect more than a couple inches here.  It looks like the Atlantic coast got a fair share of snowfall from what's been reported here so far.

We've got about 6 inches here in Baltimore. And the flakes are falling again. It looks like there's another small band of snow developing on the radar.
