Is it possoble to have hail or lightning/thunder during a hurricane?
-
Sure, it's entirely possible! They're just rare inside the core of the hurricane, but both have been detected before. The updrafts in a hurricane are not as powerful and spread out over a wider area than in a thunderstorm, which inhibits the ability to create lightning and hail. Furthermore, the freezing level inside the warm core is very high, which cuts down on hail formation. If you're in the outer bands of a hurricane, you can see hail and lightning from thunderstorms more easily.

I didn't know you could have hail in a hurricane, but I know the lightning/thunder is true. I had lightning and thunder twice with Hurricane Ivan in 2004. We had six inches of rain from it too, haven't seen that much rain since.

We never had a thunderstorm from any tropical system here. But since they spawn tornadoes I thought they could produce hail since hail is associated with tornadoes.
