Farmers' Almanac Winter 2013-2014 Outlook

Well, we know its accuracy has been questionable in the past, but here is what Farmers' Almanac is predicting for the upcoming winter.  Looks like a cold one for literally all of us.  Therefore, it will be interesting to see how things play out.  I, for one, am not looking forward to a repeat of last year.

Doesn't the Almanac predict a cold winter every year?  This mirrors the above normal hurricane forecast we get every year.  Then again, cold weather is my thing, so I can at least root for it even if I don't believe it at all.  Even less likely IMHO than the cold are the unusually wet conditions predicted for my region.  It's quite dry with burn bans galore in my state, which is a trend over the last few years.

Their forecast for the Southeast may turn out to be pretty accurate. Were expected to remain in a neutral ENSO pattern well into Winter 2014. Eventhough that could mean equal chances of anything, I feel like the pattern were in now if it were to continue into winter would lean more El Nino-ish (Chilly & Wet like the map says), but that's just my opinion and I could end up wrong anyway.

Also they mentioned they're predicting the Superbowl to be a Stormbowl with a snowstorm (or blizzard) and frigid temps in the Feb 1-3rd timeframe.

What's the different between "piercing cold" and "biting cold?" Neither one sounds fun.

Please... I don't want another "chilly and wet" winter!

I've already experienced two winters in central Florida.  Two winters ago it was reasonably warm, though we did have a few brief periods of extreme (for this region) cold, including lows in the upper 20s.  Last winter we didn't get as cold, but temperatures throughout most of the season were consistently below average - even into the mid-upper 30s.

Nobody can predict a winter accurately this far out imo. By Oct. we should have a better picture. I hope it's a warm one. 50's and 60's for temps.

Honestly, this winter is completely up in the air.  There's no signal from the ENSO cycle as Tavores noted earlier, and we have been stuck in a persistent pattern with an upper level ridge to the west and an upper level ridge to the east.  That pattern could suddenly shift in the coming months and change everything.  There's just no way we can predict seasonal weather with much skill at this time until the gap between forecasting the weather and forecasting the climate (two entirely different problems) can be bridged.

Oh how I missed the Winter of 2009-2010, I saw snow fall (and accumulate) every month from Jan-March that winter.

I don't care if it it's COLD/WET, COLD/DRY, MILD/DRY, or WARM/WET as long as I get at least my one 2 inch snowstorm I was robbed of for two winters straight I will be very happy.

I love how even though these sources have us in for below normal, snowy winters, yet the CPC's long term maps almost always have us in for above average temperatures. I never know which to rely on. The CPC even predicted 09-10 and 10-11 to be above average and those winters were brutally cold and below average for us temperaturewise.
