Earliest weather event you remember
« on: February 01, 2009, 01:34:48 PM »
Here's an interesting topic: What is the earliest weather event you remember?

The earliest I remember was an F2 tornado that struck near my former hometown of Bensalem, PA during a severe weather outbreak back in 1998. This was a few miles away so the area I lived didn't get hit as hard, other than a down tree a few blocks from my house. Also, I think a few roof shingles fell off my house (the roof was nearly 50 years old at the time so we weren't that surprised). The roof was since replaced when our house was modernized in 2000. Our power was also out for a couple hours that night. The tornado dissipated just before the Philadelphia/Bensalem border. If it stayed on the ground any longer, it would of likely approach Bensalem and we'd would of gotten a lot more damage. Altogether 35 commercial buildings and ten homes were damaged, and the storm caused $1.8 million in damage. (source)

I remembered the '96 blizzard. It struck NYC exactly on my 3rd birthday. I remembered me and my family friends were playing in the snow right outside of my Queens apartment. We had a great time, then later we went to a nearby restaurant (for a cake dinner). Snow actually melted. :P

The earliest weather event I can remember is a crippling icestorm we had in January 2000, trees were snapping all over the place and ice was so thick you could probably go ice skating on the roads. The earliest weather event I can remember from the summertime was back in July 1998/1999 on my way back home with my grandma and her friend after leaving Rome,Ga. We stopped at a Kroger grocery store near my house and were caught in a severe thunderstorm with hard, wind driven blinding rains and vivid bright lightning and loud thunder, it scared the crap out of me so bad I was shaking in the car. I was about 6 then.

The Blizzard of 1996 is the earliest that I remember, we had ALOT of snow here!!! My mom remembers it more though, she says it was a really bad storm...she has a picture of herself in the snowy streets of NYC, the snow piles looked taller than her(5'+)!

Tropical Storm Opal (95), Tropical Storm Bertha (96) Blizzard of 96, Hurricane Bonnie (98)

Those were the storms I remember the most about from when I was young.

In terms of storms I actually experienced, the earliest would be the Super Storm of 93, then a tornado we had in the summer of that same year, the heat wave of 95, and the Blizzard of 96. The first I remember but didn't actually experience is Andrew, back in 92.

I don't exactly remember when but there was some huge blizzard when I lived in Boston. Don't remember much more.

I would have to say that the earliest weather event that I remember would have to be the December 2000 Midwest Blizzard. This was obviously not like the blizzards that periodically strike the northeast (because it was a Midwest blizzard :bleh: )
Anyway, it really sticks out in my mind. I was only 7. The forecast was for heavy snow, something I was not (and still am not) used to. I don't remember exact amounts forecasted, but when it was all said and done, there was just a touch less than a foot and a half of snow. This remains the most significant snowfall of my life
My dad was stuck in Grand Rapids that night. I came home from school, and at least 4 or so inches was already on the ground, with snow coming down incredibly hard.

As you can see in the videos below (courtesy of youtube user TWCRoadFan), this system was extremely potent, like nothing I have ever seen happen since. Cold air was being pulled down into the system, and warm, spring-like air was being drawn up ahead of it. Temperatures along the cold front extending down from the low contrasted sharply, with 40 degree distances over 50 or so miles! It was also a MASSIVE system. Snow was streaming north, and from the west as well. I really wish I was a lot older at the time!

The earliest weather event I remember occurred during the first nine days of November 1985 when the remnants of Hurricane Juan stalled out over eastern WV for several days and dumped 10-20" of rain, which caused the worst flooding ever in my hometown's history.  I remember being evacuated with my mom to higher ground even though I was only three years old.  The first night of the flood was especially bad as several dams upstream broke at once, which unleashed a large wall of water rushing downhill towards my hometown.  The flood destroyed many homes and businesses, and a few small towns not far away from me were completely wiped off the map.  Eastern WV was declared a federal disaster area, so FEMA and the National Guard was called in to help everyone.  A total of 54 people lost their lives during this flood, and I'm very thankful that my family and I were spared.

Pretty much in my childhood years is when I was experiencing the best of the weather than today, and I was living in weather-prone Ontario, CA (just west of Los Angeles). When I was in kindergarten, my dad took me outside in the patio just to see what was falling in my house so hard...and my dad caught a piece of hail falling from the sky! I believe the hail was the size of golfball size because I heard lots of pounding and cracks on car windows. I even saw lightning close by...and yes lights went out too. It took an hour for the storm to pass by...even though was 5 years old and I didn't understood what was going on. I guess it was the first time I saw a severe thunderstorm in person and it's the only time I experienced it.

The Earliest Weather Event that I remember was the 2003 Derecho that hit Kenosha, the skies were pitch black, golf-ball sized hail, very strong winds, and cloud to ground lightning striking several times a second. I was in school at the time, also.
