It makes you wonder how warm 2011 could potentially be.

Maybe in your area of the country, but for sure on the east coast it was sizzling.. we dont even see 100s in Florida yet at times reports this past summer got above it

I concur, 2010 was unusually cool...I haven't seen much high temps

There were many hot points and many cool points in my area in 2010, but judging for other's comments, it looks like it all depends on your location. I also remember 2005, that was a hot year for sure. I have no heater in my pool, and my pool hit 90 degrees several times.

Chattanooga saw some pretty stunning records in mid-October, when we had 2 or 3 days when the mercury broke the century mark. The local newspapers made a big deal out of it.

Guys, you have to think globally here. We're talking about the average global temperature over thousands of stations on land and sea. South America, Africa, the Middle East, parts of Russia, and Eastern Europe saw record-breaking heat. It wasn't so hot in the United States as you all say. Florida actually had its 7th coldest year on record! However, it's the average that we're worried about in terms of climate change. It may surprise you all to find out that 2010 was also deemed the wettest year on record in terms of average global precipitation.

It seems like everyone hit the century mark in the South except here, the highest I remember it getting this past summer was 98° like the summer before that, but the duration of the heat into October was what made this past summer heat worst than the one before. We were still seeing mid 90's up until mid October, plus it was so humid.

But anyway, Dallas can attest to a warm year (well, maybe summer). 107 degrees was our hottest high temperature; can't even remember the last time it got that warm.
And what about LA? :whistling2:

Didn't Russia and Europe have major snow and cold? :huh: With the news a year ago about all the less-than-accurate weather stations, I take any "warmest on record" news with a grain of salt.

Yes, they did, and that's represented on the map Martin posted with the blue as it was below normal there. However, there's a lot more red, which makes the average go up. I'm well aware about the weather stations being problematic as well, which is why we need to improve observation quality.

Oh yah. :doh: I'm surprised the midwest is red. It certainly didn't seem above normal. We had record snows in winter and our summer was rather cool. There was hardly any days above 90, let alone 100.

It's not by much though. Note how small the red dots are over your area. That means it was just a degree or two above normal. You're looking at just high temperatures, but what about your lows? In the end, the average temperature from each day is what counts. I know my area broke all kinds of records for low temperatures being so high back in summer despite only having a few high temperatures breaking records.

Yeah, one night in the summer here in Monroe, MI the low didn't drop below 80 or 82.
Once in mid-late October, the low was in the mid 70s!

Just remember to average your temps globally, and I'm happy. Just because 09-10 was a cold and snowy winter here doesn't mean it was an icebox elsewhere. And anyone who mentions politics gets to deal with Goobah, :club: the Global Warming Caveman Smiley. Survivors get to deal with me. :bleh:
Simply put, anyone who accuses the United States of being cold, and thus disproving climate change globally, should look at a hemispheric 500-mb map. If you can't read that, you have no business discussing weather, climate, or politics of the foresaid, at least in my view.
