For the coming year, the Farmers’ Almanac predicts that Old Man Winter will exhibit a “split personality.” The eastern third of the country, (New England down to Florida and as far west as the lower Ohio River and Mississippi River Valley), will experience colder-than-normal winter temperatures. Across New England, where relatively balmy temperatures prevailed during the winter of 2009–2010, the upcoming winter will be the equivalent of a cold slap in the face, as we forecast much colder-than-normal temperatures.

Meanwhile, for the Western States, milder-than-normal winter temperatures are expected. They will spread from the Pacific Coast inland as far as the Rockies and the western Great Plains. Across the nation’s midsection, near-normal winter temperatures are anticipated.

In terms of precipitation, three storm tracks are expected to predominate during this upcoming winter season. One will be across the Gulf Coast and Southeast, delivering copious amounts of precipitation from lower Texas across the South (Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia) into the Mid-Atlantic region. A second storm track will be oriented across southwestern Canada into the Great Lakes, producing a procession of fast-moving “Alberta Clipper” systems that will bring snowier-than-normal conditions to parts of the Northern and Central Plains, and to the Ohio River and Great Lakes region. As these clipper systems move off the Atlantic Coast, colder-than normal conditions will move into much of the East. Disturbances sweeping in from the Pacific are expected to bring above-normal precipitation to parts of the Pacific Northwest.

All things considered, when comparisons to last year are made, we believe that for most, it will turn out to be a “kinder and gentler” winter overall.

Hmm, that sounds like our past El Nino winter they're predicting except their prediction last year was cool and wet. Could another cold and possibly snowy winter be in  store for the deep south?  The only problem I have with that is if were still transitioning into a La Nina phase, winters are usually the opposite here mild and dry unless La Nina stays weak during the winter.

If they're basing this off of La Nina, their forecast would be spot on for the SE. That's already occurring right now, we usually don't see 90's anymore in my area by this point in the year, but we still are. Plus it has been dry as of late.

I'm thinking this will be our trend for the winter months ahead. Who knows, we will have to see

Looks like we won't get as much snow this winter, but I hope we'll still get a good winter storm or two.

I hope the AccuWeather Forecast is right. I hate winter; it's my least favorite season. Sure, the snow is fun but that's only WHEN we get some (which is hardly ever [except for last winter]), so what's the point in just cold and miserable weather?

IF the AccuWeather forecast is right, though, it demonstrates an opposite winter from the 2009-2010 winter because we broke a ton of snow records this past winter.

Yes, I do. Winter is my favorite season behind Fall. Years down the road from now I might move north. I've grown up in the south my entire life, but I absolutely HATE heat!

I can understand your reasoning for not liking Winter. TX and OK got slammed hard this past winter, we got the short stick of the draw with almost every winter storm except two and they still didn't stack up to the 12+ inches of snow ya'll saw out there, but the way I see it is if it's cold and it's gonna be wet it might as well be snowing. Cold with Heavy Raw rain like we saw this past winter is much more miserable than cold and snow imo.

This is what the Old Farmer's Almanac is saying for the Southeast (GA/SC/NC) somewhat different from what the Farmer's Almanac is saying. If you want to see what it says for your area, click on the link below. What's kinda funny about the snowfall forecast is that we always see measurable snow from between the 15th to the 20th of January. This year was an exception when it fell on the 7th.

Annual Weather Summary: November 2010 to October 2011
Winter will be colder than normal, with below-normal precipitation and near- to above-normal snowfall. The coldest periods will be in January, especially the mid- to late part of the month, and mid- and late February. The snowiest periods will be in mid- to late January.

April and May will be cooler than normal, with rainfall slightly below normal in the north and above normal in the south.

Summer will be cooler than normal, with rainfall below normal in the north and slightly above normal in the south. The hottest temperatures will be in early July and mid-August. Expect a hurricane in the second week of June.

September and October will be cooler and drier than normal

It's concerning to see long rage forecasts with the words dryer for the South and East. Drought is already becoming an issue in some areas. A good portion of VA is already in an extreme drought

Unfortunately, drier and warmer conditions in the Southeast is consistent with La Niña conditions, which we're currently enduring now.
