Title: Your Thoughts On The Emergency Alert System
Post by: ilovemikebettes on August 01, 2008, 03:35:12 PM
I always think that the EAS is life saving, but freaking annoying sometimes. I woke up to the EAS at 6:30 this morning. It was for a flash flood warning that wasn't even for me! Luckily,my cable company has the option of you exiting the EAS alert.  That's nice if you don't want to hear about a flash flood warning,or any warning for that matter that isn't for you! Your thoughts? Please write them.

Luckily, I didn't have to go through the same situation you did. Though there was one time 10 years ago when my favorite Saturday Morning Cartoons were interrupted by the EAS followed by an Amber Alert.

Although some of the EAS notifications do not apply to my area, I still like to be in the know of where the storm is heading, which county is declared a disaster area, etc.

I find the EAS useful, but I haven't seen it regularly since 2004.

I really don't mind it.  It takes at least 30 seconds to a minute.  Doesn't interrupt that much TV.  Not much you can do about it though, since it is required.

My EAS alerts 3 cos. Franklin, Anderson and (The one To The EAST of us) Woodford It gets annoying because when the storms are east of us I Still get The Warning which I really don't Need anymore (They don't even have the same cable as us and neither does anderson county for God's Sake)

I really hate it when my cable company sends an alert through the DVR box. All of a sudden it will stop anything Im watching including recordings and show a EAS test message. A big pain IMO since I have never see them send a real alert when there issued. <_<

I agree. Unless it's important,no one cares.

I hardly ever see EAS notices on my television, anymore.  Very seldom do I hear them on the radio.  The weathercasters here, though, cut in so quickly, that an EAS is practically useless, unless it's for the weather radio.  Though on the PAX channel, they will take out the audio of whatever's playing, and replace it with an EAS tone.  It's pretty scary if you're not expecting it.  Though with that being said, I think the alerts issued by the EAS for my area, these days, are really slacking.

Also, I don't know if this has a lot to do with the topic, but I swear, I think the tornado sirens in my area are broken.  Even when we were issued under a tornado warning last, I didn't hear them go off.

Many of us hear most of the EAS messages from radio stations that are responsible for EAS activation such as WGN-AM in Chicago and WBAP-AM in Dallas/Fort Worth.

The EAS used to freak me out all the time when I was little (even if it was a required monthy test). Before whe the EAS was first used nationwide, we used to have the Emergency Brodcast System. My cable company which was then TCI (now Comcast) used to test the EBS every month on the first Tuesday. Comcast still does this today in my area after when they replaced the EBS.

I even recall that whenever when they use the old EBS durring Emergencys or even if its only a test, the cable company would somehow cut off the signal with a snowy picture and it would play a really loud "whoo-whoo-whoo-whoo" sound through the audio and then all of the TVs would somehow automaticly turn off on its own. I even thought it was sort of cool. My cable company used to do that back in the 80s and 90s before when the EAS came out in our area.

Mine only sound twice and stop.
