Title: Your Interactive Program Guide
Post by: kswx29 on June 05, 2010, 03:13:00 AM
If you have Satellite or Digital Cable or what ever else out there offers a IPG...what does yours look like?  I find it interesting what some cable provider's look like.
I have Cox Communications Digital Cable and here's what ours looks like...

I'm lucky to have the current ad-free program guide with On Demand from Comcast. It has a blue color scheme, unless you change it from the Setup menu.

You can change the color scheme?  I like Cox's being Ad-Free but its really plain and blah.  They need to spruce it up and add some options to change some stuff.  I also really don't need the little TV window in the upper right...if I wana watch a show I will turn into that channel...

DISH DVRs' guides have never had any ads, but you can't change themes unless you wanna take out the hard drive and screw with it there. :P

The only things you really can change are the font size (and subsequently how many programs are shown at once), you can remove the inset screen (who would want to do that?!), and modify personal channel lists.

I just typed all of that on my iPod, and I'm fed up with this keyboard. Rawr! Anywho, that's the DISH DVR IPG.

Mine looks like this (except with a Comcast logo of course):

It's not that customizable; you only have like six color schemes to choose from. I know the Motorola here at my dad's has a lot more options in addition to more color schemes - such as how many rows of data you want in the guide, where in the screen you want the miniguide in, etc.

Wow! That's pretty cool! Now all I want is a TiVo, since I am sick of looking at this...

You're getting the iGuide (http://hd.engadget.com/2010/05/19/comcast-cisco-sa-markets-are-finally-getting-the-iguide/) like the Moto boxes soon.

For the record, I've got the Moto box with the iGuide and all that jazz.

*I* can't wait for CableCard tuners for the PC...

Compared to Cox, Dish's is pretty plain. Just blue boxes for the shows and white boxes for the channel numbers. As Jonathan said, the only customization option is choosing whether or not to "preview" the channel you're currently watching. I don't think I've ever seen an IPG with ads in it.

Curt's guide looks like mine, except mine is blue instead of "onyx". I would like an upgrade soon, though. It's been roughly five years and my cable program guide upgrades nearly every five years. I have an HD receiver for one TV, and it looks the same.

This is my (pretty close) mockup of the IPG for DISH DVRs. The guide design varies with each type of receiver...only the DVRs are all alike. This is in the default configuration...I'm working on the others.

EDIT: Added one with data in it and some minor fixes made.

They already exist, however, only for OEMs

That would be nice, although my cable box is horribly slow as it is (it's about 10 years old) and I can only see the iGuide making it slower as the new interface is more rich in graphics. I'll have to check in with Comcast and see if they can upgrade my SA box to a new Motorola one.

DirecTV's EPG. Second attachment is the mini-guide.

All Bright House STBs have that guide.

Out of question, does anybody know when there will be some updates to the Comcast DCT2000? When I ran the operator diagnostics, it said it was running the June 2005 Firmware (Or something like that)... I want something thats actually not to hideous to look at... if you know what I mean. And to think that Comcast HD is good... Look at Cox! lol

I have a feeling firmware updates have been out, but it's up to comcast if they want to put the time forth to pick a firmware release and customize it for a rollout.

Comcast owns the rights to their "iGuide." Any other cable co that uses that guide actually pays Comcast royalty fees. As far as it not being updated since 2005, that's actually not true (don't get me wrong, it's still shitty). Updates come out, however it can take years for some places to see the updates (and some areas never see them) since they're rolled out on a market-by-market/headend-by-headend basis, and not all areas have the capability to run the new updates.

I will post pictures of my beloved  FiOS guide later on

I've seen some pics of the FiOS program guide. I nearly drooled. It rendered my guide obsolete. I wish the Comcast HD guide would look like it.

New ones that aren't technically illegal... (http://cetoncorp.com/)

Silicondust makes network TV tuners and they are making a three-tuner.  Big fan on Media Center on Windows 7.
