Title: U.S. Officially In Recession
Post by: lfmusiclover on December 01, 2008, 04:21:11 PM
According to the following article, it's been (finally!) officially declared that the country is in a recession, and has been since this time last year:

http://money.cnn.com/2008/12/01/news/economy/recession/?postversion=2008120115 (http://money.cnn.com/2008/12/01/news/economy/recession/?postversion=2008120115)

The article goes on to say that economists are predicting that the economy will hit bottom in the second quarter of 2009, which means we still have a good while to go before this recession might be over. On the bright side, the article also says that some of the interest rate cuts imposed by the government last year should start helping the economy very soon.

Meaning gas prices may rise again. :(

Possibly, but not necessarily. Its going to take a decent increasing in consumption before we see prices rise again, and until the economy starts improving ALOT we're not going to see gas consumption increase very much. Personally, I think the days of $4 gas are gone for a good while.

Gas prices are going to go up anyways.

I read somewhere that sales of SUV's are rising again. How freakin' stupid do you have to be?

Gas prices aren't going up anytime soon.

I'd like to know where you read that bit about SUV's. I can't imagine how that could possibly be true.

After the crap the market took today, doesn't surprise me.

Current trend is market down = oil down, but watch the USD/EUR currency trade (the one that CNBC uses on their ticker)...a RED means a stronger dollar, which is bad for oil.  GREEN is weaker dollar, stronger oil.

Class A dumbasses if that's the case.

Gas is a limited supply. It will go up.

I think it was in the newspaper. I can't remember off the top of my head.

I hope we don't get another Great Depression. Sounds grim according to the article.

Not as long as demand keeps going down, which it will for quite some time yet.

Well maybe, if hybrid-car sales go up. But even those require gas.

Has nothing to do with that. People simply aren't traveling as much, because they have less money to spend.

Hmm didn't think of that. I didn't know that such a considerable amount of people were driving less.

From what I've heard it has indeed been a pretty considerable drop. That was one of the key things that spurred this huge price drop.

No, with the new acts and laws that have been placed during and after the depression we'll get nowhere near that anymore.

If you had any idea how close we are to a depression you'd realize how stupid that statement is.

I don't think it'll be bad as years past, but it's definitely not good news..at all. (obviously)

I agree with Gary on the gas prices.  Since the downfall of the economy in recent months, all prices have done is gone down.  We saw no increase in prices for the Thanksgiving holiday.  In fact, I don't think there was an increase in prices for Labor Day, either (if it was, it was little).  As long as our economy is down, so are the prices at the pump, which is probably the only light in the situation.

Many people are turning to mass transit.

You don't file lawsuits. The only filing your parents might do is for bankruptcy protection.

You can't file a lawsuit against a company for firing you, unless of course it was a valid reason like racial or sexual discrimination.  It's the economy, there is nothing you can do about it.

Luckily, my job is safe in tact...for now.  More people are getting fast food rather than something fancy (I assume..).  My parents, however, got hours cut at their job.  But, my dad has a backup part time job that can turn into full time easliy

I hope my parents don't lose their jobs. If they do, I would lose my house!

Is there someone I can sue over this? I'm not living with this for the rest of my life.
Can you please try to think rationally?

i can't really say the same, yes i work in the fast food industry...but when you're working with idiots (management team)...nothing gets done or make sense...

for the first time EVER that i've been working at freddy's...i have TEN (10!) cashiers...and 8 cooks...we're becoming overstaffed, theres a lack of communication, all my managers are MALES, so their going to continue hiring hot looking cashiers (i should add that i'm now the last male cashier who gets paid higher than the other cashiers) making me target number 1 on the list to be fired.

it's ridiculous.

anyway back on subject :p haha. sorry.
