Title: TV Tuner Issues... new one to recommend?
Post by: wxntrafficfan on December 28, 2009, 05:32:12 PM
I am having a boatload of issues with my laptop's HP TV tuner. It worked perfectly for me back in July, but even with a new one now and even a different hard drive than what I first had, the recordings always have a major issue with skipping, and they keep cutting out early. I want to look into getting a different one, but all that there seems to be out there is Hauppauge... and I can't ever get those to work.

Anyone know of a good TV tuner, that no matter where I buy it, I can return it for a full refund if it does not work? I'd appreciate it

Anything WinTV (especially external) is good.

Pinnacles are

So try the WinTV HVR 950Q: http://hauppauge.com/site/products/data_hvr950q.html (http://hauppauge.com/site/products/data_hvr950q.html)

Zach, WinTV is Hauppauge. I already have two tuners with both Hauppauge and WinTV marked on them, and I can't get either one to work.

Must be you or your computer then because WinTV works fine for me.

Well one of them, which I bought in 2007 right after I bought my desktop computer, does not work because it is only analog. The other one does not install properly, and it is too complicated.

Well I'm sorry because that's pretty much the only type of tuner you can buy in the stores these days. :(

I wish I could recommend some good TV tuners, but WinTV is the only brand TV Tuner I have ever used  :( but I actually like WinTV, the one I use works perfect for me.  :)

How much memory is there on your computer? Also, have you left it on and used the tuner a lot? This can decrease the performance of especially consumer-level laptops greatly as they're not meant for heavy usage like what you have been doing with it.

I guess, if I can find the tuner and the software, I can try the newer WinTV TV tuner I bought. I can always ask Staples to get it working for me.

The computer has 4 GB of ram, and about 250 GB with the HD. Yes, I use the computer a lot, and don't give it much downtime, but I don't leave the TV tuner plugged in. I only plug in the tuner when I intend to use it.

You mentioned how you left it recording almost continuously overnight when you were on trips last summer. That, as you know overheats the laptop and also may have been how the computer doesn't work as well as it used to.

Yeah, I used to be able to set it for half hour recordings all nite. But, that was not every nite, and was only once or twice a month.
