Probably never will ever no how many people is missing, etc.  This country needs to prepare for something like this.
What?  Japan is probably the most prepared country for earthquakes in the entire world.  They were even warned about 1 minute before it hit.
This country means "America".

As has already been said, Japan is the most prepared country in the world to deal with earthquakes.  Earthquake preparedness has basically become a part of their lives.

However, no country, with current technology, can deal with the effects of one of the strongest earthquakes on record plus a tsunami of immense proportions all within the same hour.  It's just not possible.

To be perfectly honest, Japan is coping probably better than most countries could in such a situation.  It's a true tragedy that's taking place there, there's to be much recovery work and much sadness for quite a while to come, but at least Japan will survive, rebuild, and, hopefully, learn something from this and teach the rest of the world.

Nature is still more powerful than man.

America, to an extent, is prepared for natural disasters.  However, the United States is much larger than Japan and also faces more varied natural threats.

The parts of the country that are used to earthquakes have stronger building codes than in other places.  However, if a rare earthquake should strike in an unexpected and unprepared place, there can be a disaster.  The west coast, including Hawaii and Alaska, are the most prepared for a tsunami (though, really, what can one do?).  However, should an Atlantic tsunami (similar to the one that affected Newfoundland in the 1920s) strike... good luck to the people on the eastern seaboard.  The South gets paralyzed in a snowfall that Northerners hardly even notice.

Since Japan is small, it's more homogeneous in terms of the disasters it can face, and the whole country can prepare accordingly.  The United States is larger and faces a much wider variety of natural disasters, though each kind is generally limited to a local scale.

But, as I already said, it's impossible to prepare for everything, especially against Mother Nature.

On a different note: The Prime Minister of Japan stated this was the most difficult crisis to deal with since WWII. So, this earthquake and the resulting tsunami have had an impact on Japan not seen since the war and the nuke bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Wasn't there a 7.9 earthquake off the Japan coast earlier this week also? Would this had been an aftershock to that one?

After a closer look at the measurements, the USGS and Japan's Meteorological Agency both officially put the Japan earthquake at magnitude 9.0 on the Richter scale.  This means that it was the 4th largest earthquake recorded in the world since 1900.
