I'm quiet surprised this hasn't been posted but a large Earthquake and Tsunami struck Japan a short time ago with wide-spread devistating damage, and now Tsunami Warnings are in effect for the entire Pacific including the state of Hawaii, with (according to TWC) a Tsunami Watch for Oregon and Washington.

The earthquake was registered at magnitude 8.9 on the Richter Scale.  The tsunami was reported to be about 10 meters high in Tokyo, which is about 33 feet.  It's a really tragic day in Japan. :(

Wasn't there a 7.9 earthquake off the Japan coast earlier this week also? Would this had been an aftershock to that one?

Many thoughts and prayers go out to those in Hawaii and along the West Coast.

This is so sad.  My thoughts and prayers are with all of those effected, and the countless families who have lost loved ones.  Hundreds reported dead, with much, much more expected, unfortunately.

Unbelievable.

the band from the school I graduated from is currently on a trip to hawaii, they are safe and the wave that hit the island was not as extensive as they thought it would be.

I found out that this earthquake that triggered everything was the 7th strongest ever recorded.  Hundreds of people are dead in Japan, and hundreds more are missing.  We'll likely be talking over a thousand dead before they can find everyone in the rubble.  Some of the tsunami footage on CNN this morning was unreal and really scary to watch.

This is the first time in my life that I've actually been under a Tsunami Warning (being a new resident in the San Diego area). The warning lasted several hours during the nighttime, until then it became more of an advisory. Schools didn't cancel or anything here in SD, everything went as if today was a normal, boring day. The LA area and above got most of the damage than any other part of the west coast, especially Crescent City, which is the hardest hit. I was a bit concerned that I'd be seeing some waves coming ashore, since I live near the coast, but nothing happened. As far as I know, no damage have been reported here in the San Diego area.

On a related note. I knew about the earthquake before those "bozo" news networks went on the air to break the news about it. I knew that the cities of Sendai and Tokyo would be extensively damaged by the 8.9 quake, but I never thought that this would trigger a massive tsunami. Reminds me of the 2004 Tsunami in Indonesia. I also never thought that the tsunami would actually impact the whole Pacific Ocean. It's amazing what natural disasters can do.

EDIT: I think the title should be 8.9 quake in Japan/Pacific Tsunami. We're basically talking about both the tsunami in the pacific AND the earthquake in Japan.

1 dead and 1 missing in Crescent City, CA so far. 4 people were also swept out to sea. This is the second fatal tsunami to hit Crescent City since 1964.

Probably never will ever no how many people is missing, etc.  This country needs to prepare for something like this.

What?  Japan is probably the most prepared country for earthquakes in the entire world.  They were even warned about 1 minute before it hit.
