Every city does have some danger to it, but some of these cities you have to be actively doing something stupid in order to get mugged/robbed, or live in a neighborhood rampant with crime. But not every city has multiple public shootings within a week.

You'd think New York would be rampant with crime, but two Mondays ago they had zero murders for the first time in a very, very long time.

If anybody watched the 12.12.12 concert on Ion Television last night, they cut it short at 12:30AM by airing an episode of WWE Main Event. According to the network's Facebook page, there were a lot of people who were pissed off at the network for cutting the concert short, with some even threatening to boycott the network. I was one of the viewers who watched the Ion broadcast, and man, was I mad!

UPDATE: My dad just emailed me and said that he recorded the whole concert from HBO on DVR  :thrilled:  so I'll be able to watch what I've missed when I head over across the state to my parents' house in a couple of weeks.

I watched it, but stopped watching it around 12:00AM. It was a great concert, but I HATE how everyone has been focusing on New Jersey and New York City alone. Jersey this and Jersey that and NYC and NYC that. If it wasn't for Billy Joel, Long Island would have never been mentioned, other than Long Beach. And what about Connecticut, or Maryland?

Long Island, August-September 2012 tornadoes, Hurricane Sandy, Blizzard of 2013, how many places on Earth do you know can get all 3 of those events within a 6 month period?

For those of you majoring or majored in meteorology, did you take Chemistry and how useful was it for your major? My school requires 2 semesters of chem and a semester of biology which Im almost done completing once I finish my finals. I don't see much need for chem in this field besides measuring atmospheric pressure which I think is more physics oriented

New Jersey and Long Island were the hardest hit areas, far more than Connecticut and Maryland.

I took one semester of gen Chem my freshman year of college (that's what OU requires for its met majors).  Of course, I think that's the most popular gen-ed science class, so it was HUGE (300+ students).  We have to take another semester of gen-ed science, but it doesn't have to be the second level of gen Chem (instead, it can be biology, geology, botany, etc.)

As far as Chem's usefulness: depending on how your college handles physics, you'll find that the first part of Physics 2 which deals with thermodynamics is actually somewhat of a repeat of what you learned in Chem (i.e. the ideal gas law, atmospheric pressure, etc.)  However, things such as organic chemistry or drawing Lewis structures, probably aren't so important to a met major.

Again, I was required to take at least one semester of gen Chem, and it was an easy course for me, but if you don't take it, I don't think you'll be missing out on much.  Hope that helps a little. :)

Yet another mass shooting - this time at a CT elementary school :( I saw on the local news about as many as 27 are dead by federal officials.

EDIT: That's just an unofficial estimate just to add.

I guess it's that time of year.

Unfortunately, as I believe someone here mentioned, the holidays can be a time of increased violence because of many factors, the primary one I would assume being depression.  I wish those who do suffer these problems would talk to counselors or someone, rather than kill innocent others, but sometimes these are things we just can't control. :(

I saw a part of the movie "Contact" today, and in the background of one of the scenes, there was a TV set that had a STAR 4000 running on it...

Why would someone do such a heinous crime, killing innocent people including children? We may not have known who those victims were, but it's still just so devastating and heartbreaking that it happened  :(

I only needed one semester of general Chemistry.  It's helpful due to the gas laws, understanding of heat and energy, and the chemical reactions that occur in our atmosphere relating to air quality.  Physics is definitely more important, and I had to take two semesters of it just to give you an idea.

I'm afraid these shootings come in waves as some people on the brink emotionally due to financial, academic, and self-confidence issues see others doing it and suddenly just "lose it" and think it's a good idea.  They're angered and depressed so much that sanity and logic simply vanish.  In this instance, the shooter shot his own mom and her class as she was a teacher there.  It tells you something went horribly wrong in this family.

Our country must do a far better job in learning more about mental health and seeking help.  We're way too divided and influenced by our high standards of living that make some feel a complete failure if they can't meet everything.  It's time to go back to the basics and be thankful for what you have in life.  Thanksgiving and Christmas now really mean something when you view the holidays from this down-to-earth perspective.

I agree about the shootings and thanks Andy and Patrick. I'm thinking about going into Meteorology if Analytical physics and calc 1 would open.....

You better make sure you are prepared to take Calculus courses all the way up to Differential Equations as it's required anywhere to make it into Meteorology.  Andy is finding that fact out the hard way now. :P

Yeah tell me about it. You might as well major in mechanical engineering or mathametics at any rate lol
