"Cold spell" is also a relative term, and it's usually not used to compare a time period as far back as the 1800s. For this 365-day period, this is definitely a cold spell for the South. Granted, we're not as cold as back then, but we can still experience some pretty brutal lows nonetheless.
Right. But you have to agree that these brutal lows are null to what people had to cope with back then. It was probably a much more worse case scenario back then than it is today due to the fact that many people didn't have proper heating utilities, many more people back then died of cold related inflictions than today, mainly do to the advancements in modern technology, that doesn't happen much anymore. If you think we got it bad, just imagine what it was like hundreds of years ago during cold spells. Not much heat for the house, maybe if you were poor, you couldn't afford a coat. We take a lot for granted, not thinking of what it was like years before.

Long Island, August-September 2012 tornadoes, Hurricane Sandy, Blizzard of 2013, how many places on Earth do you know can get all 3 of those events within a 6 month period?

Still a few hours left, but looks like the cold was sorely over-estimated by NWS in Florida. Georgia and South Carolina seem to have done well. Here's how lows are faring as of the 4:53 AM EST METAR observations.

Punta Gorda, FL - 32
Tampa, FL - 36
Orlando, FL - 34
Miami, FL - 44
Jacksonville, FL - 25

A bit farther north:

Atlanta, GA - 23
Charleston, SC - 23
Florence, SC - 18

Both TWC and NWS made a bulls eye forecast. They both predicted lows of 14°F which was perfect.

Just got back from New York City yesterday. It was super exciting to see the ball drop from Times Square. It's nice to be back home though!

Holy crap! I just went searching around on TWC's interactive temperature map. Turns out the many places in the northern mid-west are seeing incredible highs today. For example, Murdo, SD reached 74°F, shattering the old record by 21 degrees! After looking up some more data, it's the second highest temperature ever recorded in the month of January there, the highest ever being 75°F. You would think it would be in teen's and twenty's during this time of the year according to the average, but the with a high of 74°F, it will make it an outstanding 42 degrees above average!!! I've never seen it so above average in any given place. WOW  :o

DirecTV doesn't have the 4000...it has the national satellite forecast.

Wow... the long, and tedious path known as the JOB SEARCH has started for me a couple of days ago. I am VERY UNLIKELY that I'll find an IT job here in EC. I applied to a few in San Diego, and a couple in Phoenix (my parents approved my decision of moving to Phoenix, AZ... FINALLY. lol) My friend told me before that employers are more likely to hire a female IT technician because some companies want to balance the gender ratio, sooo let's see how this plays out!

Haha well I was trying for something a little more official :P Might change it back... i keep forgetting who I am!

Sorry! You gotta wait three months!

I know. Right now I have the 4000 because another cable company took over our (now previous one), and we don't like them and our bill is sky-high, so we're switching to DirecTV on Saturday. I love the 4000, and that is really the only thing I'll miss from this cable company. It is actually the unit I grew up with!
