Harsh Arctic air to possibly let up by the end of the month. That would be a typical La Nina pattern.

Has anyone watched the show "Strange Addictions" on TLC?  Very interesting show.  There are people who are addicted to eating chalk, eating/drinking laundry detergant, tanning, cats, wearing a costume.  Weird stuff, but definitely interesting.

My belief is that society needs to relearn how to get along with one another.  Because acts of kindness and simple respect seem to be lost at times in this world, people can turn to some unhealthy addictions like what you all mentioned above to find comfort or even an escape from a harsh reality.  Many addictions are caused by something fundamental that is missing inside a person emotionally, socially, or psychologically.

Value your friendships and loved ones, and always look for ways to give and earn respect from others through simple acts of kindness.  I really believe that would help a lot of people right now.

The MJO is looking pretty good for extended cold. I doubt Feb will be very warm for the east coast

It makes me wonder how Floridas summer will be now.. this is amongst the coldest winters Ive seen in my life down here and summer 2010 was amongst the warmest. Quite odd

Maybe this summer will be a happy medium for you all. :) But yeah, I've seen where Orlando has been in the 50s a LOT this winter...Miami in the lower 60s. That's crazy; I think we've been warmer a few times. And hopefully spring break in Florida for me this year won't be like last year when it was 60 degrees and rainy in the middle of March.

This Summer was hot like usual here in Texas so nothing new.

However, last winter it got down to a chilling 14 degrees here and snowed twice!

This winter, nothing big yet... But in the California desert, it flooded. Talk about climate change!

I wish society could hear that very statement. It would really make people think.

verizon has horrible coverage in texas, apparently.
Total opposite up here. AT&T sucks and the majority of people have VZ.
Same situation here. AT&T is horrible in this area
Same here. Just about everyone I know has it.

Tyler- lake effect snow is very interesting.  I would love to go somewhere around the Great Lakes and experience it.
It definitely is amazing, that's for sure. I will never forget the night I went down to South Haven on New Year's Day last year. In the morning of the next day, the snow had ended in South Haven itself, but I met a near blizzard (literally) when I got down to the lighthouse. My dad and I also ran into zero visibility on the way back up I-196 (with one lane of slow traffic), but it was completely sunny when we got to Grand Rapids.
If only there was a section of meteorology devoted specifically to lake effect snow :P

Speaking of that, I've been getting some great driving experience in snow lately (and ice yesterday). On just a 9 mile stretch of Interstate 69 before getting off south of Owosso last Tuesday, I got passed by three semis and tons of cars on the snow covered interstate. Forgive me for being safe on the freeway, lol

Well, no school here today due to a 1/10" glaze on the roads, below a dusting of snow. That's all you need to close school up for the whole day. Only 1 "snow day" left until we have to go longer this summer...., and I haven't even seen any good snowstorms yet this season. :/

Wow, your school district has used up that many? We've had one day off so far this season in Haslett (December 13th). I think the state (not completely sure how it works) allows 30 hours per year, which translates into 4 days and one two hour delay (not quite a fifth day).

We also get 30 hours, though here, one snow day is equal to 6 hours. (5 snow days per year, less if there's fog delays.)
So far, we've had 2 fog delays, and 3 snow days. (Dec 13, Jan 12, Jan 19.) For a total of 22 hours used. So, there's one day and one fog delay left, and we're not even halfway through the winter.

As of 2006 no snow days are built in to our schedule (we used to have two). We have to make them all up now. And starting this year after one more snow day, they will start eating our spring break away. Oh how I love NJ! <_<
