I may be wrong here, but isn't the STAR ID just the configuration? Meaning even if it's a new unit, the STAR ID wouldn't change as it would be the same configuration?
No, I'm pretty sure it's based on the unit itself and not the configuration. Thus, you'll probably have a different ID# (likely starting with 28 if it's a new unit). Depending on whether a configuration on one broken STAR can transfer to a new one, you'll might have the exact same or slightly different configuration.

I wonder if my IntelliStar is "broken" too, which is why I'm getting Burlington's instead of Mount Holly. Might be some hardware failure or something.

Star ID is unique to each unit. Thus you'll have a new one.

Why is it odd that his STAR is broken? Its a computer. Just like any other computer, its not immortal. Problems happen. They just do.

Not that I'm saying this isn't an important issue, but why do you all care? Most, if not all of you, have cable or satellite.

Most of us care because the transition frees up the bandwidth from analog channels to make room for more HD channels

You do know this transition is only for Over the Air and not cable, correct? The Cable digital transition doesn't happen until atleast 2012 iirc...

Well, tell that rep he's stupid. The transition has nothing to do at all with anything except Over-the-air transmissions. Now, the only thing that it affects is how fast other companies get to use said airspace that will be freed.

As I've said before, several areas that have Comcast will be getting rid of the "Expanded Basic" Analog tier of service and making you use the digital one, but that is totally unrelated and will happen at times that Comcast chooses and not the government.
