Title: The Holidays Come Earlier Each Year
Post by: TWCToday on November 11, 2008, 05:41:51 PM
I can't beleive it. I turned on the radio today and guess what I heard... Christmas music!! On Veterans Day!!! Is it bad enough we have to start seeing the stuff in stores at the end of August. Sheesh. Anywhere else starting xmas music early?

Its not that I dont mind but I end up being sick of it by the time the Holidays arrive. And when it hits 12am on December 26 these stations rush to shut down any holiday music. For crying out loud the time right after Christmas counts as the holidays. Thats when I DO want to hear the music. This station in my area started November 7.

IMO, Christmas music should start in the first week of December. People are already putting christmas decorations in their houses for display.

I haven't heard any Xmas music yet, but I'm seeing the commercials for Christmas sales and decorations from Walmart and Kmart, which isn't that unsual. I was at Target last Saturday and the first floor had Halloween decorations and the second floor had Christmas trees and decorations.

I was so gonna make a thread about this a few days ago! Yes, it is incredibly commercial now. It's unacceptable on just about every level. People only care about gifts now.

Society sucks. People suck. The government needs to step in and do something. :ermm:

Haha yea. We wish. The goverment encourages people to spend money at Christmas. In the end it will help the goverment. Dont think there going to step in anytime soon.

One of the stations here have been playing Christmas music since the day after Halloween. Ridiculous.

I also started seeing Christmas ads for stores like K-Mart two weeks ago.

It is also worth mentioning that it's Christmas. Not "Holidays".

They just put up the giant Christmas Tree in Rockefeller Center. Geez, can it get any earlier? After Thanksgiving would've been a better date.

It seems to happen around this time. I don't start caring about the holidays until well into December. The holidays end for me on my birthday, on January 13.

Does anyone think TWC will roll out Christmas LF music sooner this year?

They haven't in the past, so my guess is no.

Yeah I'm doubtful about that too. Just don't see TWC having any interest in starting the Christmas music sooner.

Geese (not towards members here ;)).

The "Christmas" season starts on December 1st, people.

I'm seeing those Home Depot and Lowe's ads already, and I'm getting sick of it.

Can't we just start the Christmas season in peace by starting it on 12/1?

Trying to decide whether to post this here or in the PBS. Anyways, has anyone else noticed an explosion of car commercials on TV lately? Now they've started "Christmasing" them up. Hate to tell 'em, but NO ONE is going to be buying a car this Christmas.

My cousin is actually a car salesman. The dealership that he works at has been doing very poorly this year.

All car dealerships have done poorly this year. Many around here have gone belly up.

EDIT: Speaking of car commercials, you know what really peeves me? The auto industry is asking the government for bailouts because they have no money, yet somehow they still find money for all these commercials. Real odd, that.  :hammer:

I was at the mall yesterday, and they have several Christmas trees and ceiling decorations scattered throughout the mall already.

I doubt they'll make more money over this. Would they lose listeners if they start it earlier and earlier? I don't see why one would want to hear Christmas music already in late October/early November.

I think Christmas should not even be mentioned until the day after Thanksgiving, otherwise known as Black Friday.

What's more important: Gifts for your spoiled brats, or celebrating the founding of this amazing country?

Christmas is a far more economic based holiday (sadly) than Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving has managed to maintain its roots as a holiday about celebrating our country's founding. People haven't found a way to make money off of it yet.

Not to get religious or anything, but those who are responsible for turning Christmas into a commercial holiday are the ones that will be sent to hell for eternity.
Title: Re: The Holidays Come Earlier Each Year
Post by: TWCToday on November 19, 2008, 08:39:30 PM
Christmas itself really is an interesting holiday. Around that time of year, the Romans celebrated Saturnalia. A festival to Saturn if you didn't guess. They used garland and other decorations we connect with Christmas.  Around the spread of Christianity, many people decided to "add it on" as it were. What better way to get people to celebrate a holiday then to have it at the same time as another one. We dont really know Christ's birthday but we can guess it was more like spring time. Its sad that we have kinda done the reverse of this in modern times. Simply tacking on the reason why we choose to have the holiday. The commercialism at Christmas is just absurd.

Well...what kind of Thanksgiving commercials can they have?

I honestly don't think it's that bad right now.  Probably this weekend it'll start going overboard in the media, but there is nothing we can do about it.  Complaining isn't going to help either

But yes, I think Thanksgiving is an important holiday.  In fact, it's probably my favorite holiday.  I get to see family that I only see on 2 occasions a year (Easter being the second), and you get to eat TONS and TONS of food  :twothumbs:  and of course giving thanks to everything you have.

Giygas will eat the Christmas profiteers, you know.

But to be honest, I do think it's a bit overboard nowadays. Hell, i'm 20 and even I remember when the Christmas stuff didn't start until Black Friday.
