Update on the internet problem: We've got a solution that we're going to try soon. First, we'll plug the telephone (with a filter) into the current phone jack that the DSL modem is plugged into, so we can use the living room phone. For the DSL modem, we've got a phone jack in our hallway that's unused. Since the hallway (and the phone jack) is not that far away from the modem, we're going to get a long telephone cable, plug it into the surge protector (we have the modem surge protected), and then plug the other end into the hallway phone jack (directly into it, NOT with a filter). We're not going to have the wire stretched across the floor, though, as that would be a bad idea, because if we do that our cat(s) will probably chew on the wire, and we don't want that to happen. ;) Instead, we'll just wire it off to the side (along the wall), and we'll wire out around the door frames, and then plug it in to the jack in the hallway. That way, the cats can't (or have a very hard time trying) chew on the wire, and the connection problem will be fixed because the filter can't cause an interference with the modem because they're on 2 different jacks.

I didn't know a filter can cause interference on a modem?

It does. You're not supposed to use a filter on a DSL modem because it causes interference (which was the reason why my internet kept going up and down).

My internet actually went down this morning, but I think it was an issue with our ISP, not an issue on our end.

Oh yes. The ISP will tell you not to put a filter on the DSL line for that very reason.

Stephen, your solution sounds good. Hopefully it will work!  8)

Yea, but shouldn't it work if you plugged the modem into the jack on the filter that says "DSL Modem" or whatever?  That's how I have it?  (Actually I tried plugging a phone into the DSL jack on the filter and it was static, meaning that jack wasn't filtered)

You cannot plug a DSL modem into the filter. The filter filter's out the signals that the modem needs to operate properly. IF your phone jack has a splitter installed, you may install a filter on another device (like a phone, fax, etc.) and plug it into the splitter alongside the modem, but a filter can never be placed on the DSL modem line.

What about the jack on the filter that would say "Modem" ?

I have yet to see a filter with such a jack. A filter is a small device which you plug into a phone line...it looks like a small box on the end of a phone line. Maybe your thinking of something else?

In fact, is here is a picture of a filter:

As you can see, its a simple one jack device. You simply plug a phone, fax, etc. into the jack, and plug the plug end of the filter into the phone jack on your wall. If you were to plug your modem into this, you would have lots of problems, jsut like the one's Stephen is having.

The filter that I used for my DSL modem (but I no longer use it now) had 2 plugs, not one. One was labeled "DSL" and another "Phone".

I think I have a similair filter like that. I have Verizon DSL but despite its name, it is much slower than Comcast. My dad is not willing to paying 57 bucks for a better Internet cable system such as Comcast.
