I'll be away with my family for a week starting on Monday.  I really needed this break after a very busy stretch in work, which I at least will receive recognition for helping out with issuing the warnings during the June 13, 2013 derecho here.  Hope all of you are doing well, and I'll see you when I get back!

At least you get recognition at your workplace. Something I don't receive. And there are others who don't work as hard as I do who do get awards and promotions to higher paying positions.

You haven't been there for too long to need to worry as of yet.

The summer solstice will occur at 1:04am tonight on June 21. Starting then, the sun will be on its way back south. Days will get shorter, sun angles will get lower. Not looking forward to the winter solstice.

Long Island, August-September 2012 tornadoes, Hurricane Sandy, Blizzard of 2013, how many places on Earth do you know can get all 3 of those events within a 6 month period?

About the only thing I like about summer is that it's one season away from fall.  It will be just three months till we leave this overheated porch for the fall.  I'm ready for it.

I don't mind the hot temps, actually root for them. I just like long days and high sun angles  .A 25 degree sun angle at solar noon in the winter is really depressing. Makes you wish you lived more south. If fall/winter had just as long days as summer and not have summer temps, that would be awesome. Can't think of a place that has that though. Maybe up on a mountain near the equator.

Happy first day of summer to all   Unfortunately for me, it won't feel like summer where I am in the days to come  :(  There's a slight chance of showers on and off for the next 10 days based on the forecast that I'm reading, and temps will remain in the 60s. Heat waves are rare in this part of Oregon and Washington. We did have one last August, but that one lasted for only a day or two  :P

My mom passed away Sunday. She was pronounced dead at 19:19 EDT, however she may have passed earlier than that. I'm going to be busy with a lot of responsibilities I have to take care of, so I do apologize in advance if I don't get to messages right away or seem snippy. RIP mom .... I am so sorry about your loss.  :(

I'm back from my break with family.  Hope all of you are well during the first days of this summer.

After speaking with Tavores, the winner of Round 2 at Hartford, CT (KBDL), I have the Round 3 city ready for our forecasting contest:  Peoria, IL (KPIA).  We can start it next week in hopes that it will accommodate more participation this time.
